Shall we start again with a new discussion .....

I'm another WhatsApp fan. I use it daily on both my laptop (as I can see photos/videos bigger on there) and on my mobile phone.

PayPal for paying friends & family.

Google Maps especially when driving, as I don't have a built in sat nav.

Trolley.co.uk it compares supermarket prices.

Also the BBC weather app.

Pressreader, free with my library membership. Nearly all UK daily papers, plus others from around the world. Tons of magazines on all the usual hobby subjects. I used to subscribe to a few magazines so I'm saving a fortune.

WhatsApp works fine on my android phone, butI just cannot get it up and running on my laptop, for no reason I can see,as I have Windows 11.

I have been pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to use the new app for train and bus journeys in Denmark.

Google Earth
I only use my phone for calls, texts and maybe to check Google Earth or local bus times, and sometimes to check my emails if I’m out. I don’t download apps as such. On my iPad, I use Google Earth, Iplayer, Teams, online banking ( though not the apps ).

rowyn, I’m not that knowledgeable about apps on your phone but I think that if you lost your phone the finder would not be able to access anything on it because of face recognition etc . Check with the younger generation.
I do have apps for NHS , banking etc on my IPhone but don’t have Apple Pay as that seems a step too far for me . It must be perfectly safe though because the rest of my family use it all the time .

AS usual, I'm confused. I have a smartphone reluctantly because I'm forced to these days. However,I avoid apps on it like the plague. But I do have some of what you are all calling apps on my desktop. e.g.Amazon, NHS, Facebook,
AS for banking - I see people whipping out their phone and waving it at the supermarket, but I would be absolutely terrified of losing my phone! So are the apps on your phone the same as the websites on my PC?

I forgot my banking app, really useful for almost everything, I only wish I could use it to order cash to be delivered by drone when necessary! All our local bank branches have closed, the nearest is around 40 minutes away by bus now.

LOL good idea ... I use mine a lot too. Can you withdraw money at your local post office?

I find WhatsApp really useful, much more so than emails really for day-to-day messages. Our local community of neighbours on this estate has one, set up during Covid, and it's very useful for keeping in touch and finding out about local problems, social events etc. Often if somebody wants to get rid of something, somebody else would like it.
I've got apps on my phone for my tumble dryer and for my dehumidifier, both of which I use for clothes drying. Our living room is on a different floor to these machines, so it's good to be able to set them, stop them or check whether they are running without having to go downstairs to look at them.
I'm pretty old school about parking, unless it is free or can be done by card or cash I'd rather get to my destination by bus!

I’ve always had difficulty entering info on a phone, so I’ve never mastered apps and thus miss out on all sorts of benefits. Also, I now need reading glasses to see anything on my aging Android mobile, since my cataract op and the fitting of long-distance IOLs (lenses).

I can now drive again, which is wonderful, but it’s only very recently that I’ve finally braved using PayByPhone so that I can actually go anywhere apart from supermarkets with their own car park! Still feel sorry for all the old biddies, like me, who continue to have that problem. Today’s technology leaves a lot of people out in the cold.

Do you have a laptop, computer or a tablet? They have much bigger screens for you.

For example I have WhatsApp on both my android phone and on my laptop. I much prefer to use it on my laptop because of the size of the screen and the size of the keyboard. I can also view photos I receive, larger too.

Interesting thread.

I have shied away from apps, on the whole.
Not sure why.
It may have been parking apps that put me off.
Far quicker to just insert coins.

Unfortunately our local car park no longer accepts coins, which was frustrating and I had no choice but to download the app.

Absolutely couldn’t manage without Copy Me That. It copies recipes, makes shopping lists and you can meal plan. Use it all the time. Also love Shop Shop which is my shopping list ( basically the only thing I use on my mobile phone!)
Do like Headspace and You Tube for meditation and yoga classes too. Good Reads for keeping track of all the books I read.

I don’t think all libraries subscribe to Borrowbox . I couldn’t find my local library on the list and on the council website it mentions Libby. Is this the same sort of thing?

I hadn't heard of that either, but I just googled it and yes it looks similar.

NotSpaghetti Wed 18-Feb-26 21:03:09

Libby is in my area too and for a while I had both apps but I find Borrowbox really easy to use and possibly it has more books...

Welshy Wed 18-Feb-26 20:59:53

I think you can get a library card online (to use with Borrowbox), Welshy

Thank you, I have just joined. I didn't realise you could do it all online.
