How would AI actually “kill all humans”?

That’s what we’re being told by an OpenAI person. I haven’t got the imagination obviously to work how this would happen.

Have you not watched the science fiction movies Terminator and The Matrix'? Also a story called Metal head From the 'Black Mirror short science fiction series? They are enough to scare the living daylights of anyone. What was once science fiction could become science fact!

Loved all of them, though Terminator is too scary to think about nowadays. The program in that film did what everyone is warning about today confused

Black Mirror is amazing. Very topical. So much pertinent, relevant social commentary mixed with not-so-unbelievable sci-fi!

AI is convenient for society right now in many ways. Life-changing in some. But let’s be honest, it’s a cash cow primarily for the few males talking out of both sides of their mouths. Same as any other widely used invention.

BlessedArt Totally agree. It will be interesting to see what happens in the American mid-terms, especially now that Canada is linking up with the EU. It won't make a lot of difference (I actually think we are beyond stopping AI, would love to be proved wrong) but getting new Senators on board who have no connection to AI companies may force some sort of regulation.

That’s the key! So many US politicians across the spectrum are embedded with these tech companies in some capacity. Mid-terms will be so interesting!

The concern is about lack of regulation in AI, meaning large private corporations could become more powerful than governments, and that AI agents could (perhaps unwittingly, like Covid) be released. For example, AI is learning to think and act like humans, but does not always take the moral high ground to solve problems it has been set. The leaders in AI are warning us all, but seemingly also do not want to slow down AI development in their country. Also, "rogue" AI agents could hack into energy networks, transport systens, airlines, safety systems, financial institutions, health care, food supply and cause deaths that way. Urgent cross border regulation in AI will help, (but it is happening too slowly). Unregulated Open AI getting into the wrong hands (criminals) could easily be a very dangerous thing, and that is why they are saying that AI could be very dangerous. The future is unpredictable due partly to AI. As with previous challenges to our security, it is up there with other threats (from diseases, war and, of course, last but not least, Climate Change.) It is a force for good, if strictly regulated, used wisely, but it must be regulated asap.

Agree with you !

As a lot of us recognise AI isn’t all bad.
Here’s an example. imho, beautiful.

So if AI take over the planet having wiped out humans, then what?

I guess some may survive. If so it will be those people who know what to do. The people who have been called primitive. I’m not really religious but maybe this is what’s meant by “The meek shall inherit the Earth”.

Gran22boys. "Primitive".. I should be ok then. Over the years, have been called "authentic", .. "bit quirky", and worst of all "a bit odd (which I would contest at!! ) "alternative", yes, ok, due to lifestyle choices. Vegetarian years before it was trendy. Lol. ;) smile

Those who last more than a few weeks will be those who know how to build a simple shelter, purify dodgy water, deal with body wastes and keep that body clean without hot water (without even piped cold water) keep themselves warm and dry, protect babies and young children, trap small animals for food and forage for edible plants and devise a way to cook them, and live in peace and co-operation with other survivors.

Survival may not happen successfully and any real recovery and return to anything like normality, if at all, would take a very long time. It is just a minimum prediction of what is necessary for it to happen at all.

There would be a very steep learning curve where those who were still around relearnt all the "primitive" things that we have not all had to do ourselves, for a very long time. As we lived in larger and larger groups we handed over more and more of the essential things that early humans did individually for survival to specialists, experts, council employees and government departments.

It all comes down to the paperclip theory. We are doomed.
