Our younger daughter married an Aussie, lives in Melbourne and now has 2 under 5s. My older daughter lives in London with French partner and her two kids who will be 5 and 2. Anyone any suggestions where we could meet between UK and Oz for Christmas 2013? Would like it warm with plenty to occupy kids. Thinking of Bali, but looks wet and busy with more Aussies!
Thanks everyone.

Delicious Mauritius . !!!!

Longish flight for you , 14 hours but I don"t think quite so long for the Aussies .

Good idea. Is it pricey once there? Suspect we might be footing a fair few bills!

EMM , suppose it depends on where you stay !

Thing of it is though , as it is classed as a long haul flight has to be a bit dearer .

Suppose Florida would be out of the question ? USA is SORT of nearer to Australia .

Hawaii? I had been thinking of stopping over there if/when I go to NZ again.

We were going to do Hawaii until GC No.4 arrived on the scene and put paid to that idea! South Africa? We once went to Sydney via Capetown/Jo'burg/Perth and it certainly cut down on the jetlag - 10 hours from London and 9 hours from Perth.

Only trouble with Hawaii for us Brits , is that we have to fly to San Francisco 9 hours , give or take, then the flight onto Hawaii, Mucho Expensivo . !!

I am with Nonu - i.e. Mauritius. Very friendly, they love children in the hotels and French is spoken (for French partner!). I ran two conferences there during the month of December and the weather is perfect! Lots to do for all members of the family and the hotels are excellent.

We have friends with sons in Brisbane and Auckland and they all met in San Diego for 10 days in a rented house, not sure how warm it is but think its a nice temp and they found the flights all manageable from UK and down under. If that helps!

Singapore? About half way.
Urban seaside. Stunning shopping. Orchids and greenery everywhere. Very clean. Even the tube stations have clean toilets. etc
I have not been there for 15 years but it is much expanded in terms of hotels etc.
We did like it and enjoyed things like Hindu temples (brightly painted goddesses devouring babies, that kind of thing) and various ethnic quarters. English is common language. You get called Mem.
Or Malasia which is just next door for a less manicured experience.

Don"t think you can do a direct flight from San Diego to heathrow , have to change at Atlanta , which is a pig of an airport .

Fantastic ideas - thanks to the so well traveled. Like the idea of San Diego; love Singapore but hadn't thought of it with kids. Now the discussion starts. Might need the UN to help out. Final decision rests with us, I think!

Nonu you are SO right - I hate Atlanta. But it's a hub so sometimes you can't avoid it, especially if, like me, you love San Diego!

MaggieP Sun 30-Dec-12 21:04:40

Yes Riverwalk you are right, direct flights to San Diego

Nonu Sun 30-Dec-12 21:08:31

River , good call but BA are pricey , when go Stateside , quite frankly pick the best price.

Ariadne, like San Diego , Bilbao Park , to die for , what !!
