I had a lovely flight to Sharm, as the plane was only half full and my bag was first out! There was an air-conditioned taxi waiting to take me to my favourite little hotel. I have already had one swim, which is the beauty of the early flight, but I am a bit tired as I had to leave home at 2.30 a.m.
I don't find Egypt a beautiful country - from the air, the landscape is lunar . The only bit of colour is the lovely blue sea - everything else is grey, brown, black, beige and white. The journey from Sharm to Nuweiba took 90 minutes and was almost featureless - one long straight road between bare rocky hills, with an occasional few square, concrete houses built in the desert for no apparent reason, as couple of scrawny camels and lots of plastic bags of litter. I wasn't bored because I like to see the different rock formations. There seem to be some glacial valleys, but the rivers that formed them are long since dried up.
I come for one thing only - the coral reef. It is only a short distance off the beach and stretches for miles and miles. This is the only holiday where I don't hire a car and try to see as much of the country as I can.
I have been asked why I don't go to Luxor, which is like asking somebody visiting Edinburgh why they don't visit Buckingham Palace. it would be a five hour journey across the desert or an expensive internal flight.
I am not sure what the temperature is today - but it is hot!

Enjoy! I hope the coral is good and you don't get corralled by sharks!

Enjoy and stay safe. I thought you'd booked a hotel near the airport as your flight was so early.

Best thing about Sharm is the Red Sea, and the sun, in my humble!! Enjoy

Thank you, folks. Yes, the coral is still good, although I did detect some signs of bleaching in my early morning swim - it is happening all over the world. No sharks - this bit of the Gulf of Aqaba is too shallow for them, I think. I will watch out for them when I eventually go the Great Barrier Reef though! They only came to the Red Sea near Sharm , which is about 75 kms south of Neweiba, because the tour operators were feeding them - bloody idiots, it didn't help the tourist trade much!
There are only three other guests - I am afraid the shark attack and the political situation in the big cities, combined with the general downturn on foreign holidays by Europeans, has had a very bad effect on the tourist industry here.

My 7 a.m. snorkel has given me an appetite, so I have had a warm shower and I am now off for breakfast.

I left my car in an off-the-airport car park at St. Julien, where a space is guanteed, there is a shuttle to the airport, which takes 15 minutes, and it is cheaper than the on-airport parking. Amazing what you can find if you google!

So good to hear you are enjoying your time there.

I wish they would not offer me so much lovely food - I hate to waste it, but I am going to have to do a great deal of snorkelling if I am to avoid putting on weight like I did last Winter when my sister, niece-in- law and my daughter all seemed hell bent on feeding me up!
