The Apex Temple Court Hotel, off Fleet Street. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting London. I have nothing bad to say about it! The bathroom was wonderful full of Elemis products which were replenished each day, the bed incredibly comfortable, the staff delightful, the breakfast scrumptious ............. what more can I say? Well, it wasn't cheap but it was only for 2 nights and I think a little luxury occasionally is allowed.

Not a hotel, but a B & B in York. Bootham Gardens Guest House, lovely welcome, comfortable beds, excellent breakfast (wide choice with gourmet recipes), little courtyard with fountain and table/seats. 5-10 mins walk to centre of York. From about £36 pp per night.

Plus jar of pickled eggs left in diningroom for free consumption - their eggs are delivered fresh each morning and any not used get pickled.

I have stayed at this hotel twice on business trips and really cannot fault it. Excellent value for money, lovely staff and the food is excellent and reasonably priced.

Only downside is no lift, but staff are happy to help with luggage.

I can recommend this B&B on the outskirts of Ambleside, comfortable room, fab breakfast, wonderful hosts and not too expensive!

Didn't realise you had been staying so near, phoenix. That's one of our local places for lunch and meetings. Not so far from anno's, either.

Bermonsey Square Hotel in London highly recommended and well placed for lots of the tourist sights.

The Alma Lodge is just up the road from the College where I taught until retirement grin

I live within walking distance (just, with a following wind) from the Alma Lodge,so it is indeed a small world.

vegasmags Sun 04-Aug-13 16:58:31

Possibly we should consider an Alma Lodge meet up! smile

Anne58 Sun 04-Aug-13 17:08:23

Sadly, I no longer travel sad

whenim64 Sun 04-Aug-13 17:29:15

It'd be quite a trek for you, phoenix. What a shame we didn't get to meet you when you were so near!

seasider Sun 04-Aug-13 17:46:22

I stayed at the Alma lodge for work some years ago . I just remember it being very old-fashioned has it been done-up? maybe we should meet there ?

annsixty Sun 04-Aug-13 21:13:30

I'm in, just state a date. seasider it was taken over some time ago by an Italian family who also own the Wycliffe also in Stockport. Would this be before your visits?

Elegran I love to visit York and having checked out their website will plan to stay at your recommended B&B next time I go.

GA I hope you enjoy it. They were lovely people and worked hard to make sure we were comfortable (my brother and I). Ian had a hospital appointment while we were there, (to stop and restart his heart to treat his fibrillation!) but next morning he was there trying to take over the breakfast cooking as usual, until his wife put her foot down. So he contented himself with "just" serving it and clearing the tables.
