I would be grateful if anyone can recommend somewhere really nice to stay in this area. Our booking at Orles Barn for next week has been cancelled (I think they have gone out of business) and I am frantically trying to find somewhere with a bit of luxury and good food. Thank you.

i think I know the road you mean rosequarz (never really know road numbers) Son drove us to Hay on that road last year. I was sitting in the front and DH was in the back. When we got there DH was huddled in the corner, pale-faced and actually shaking! We had to get him a coffee quick! (I loved the ride) grin

Yes, wait until you get to Hay-on-Wye to go to a pub (or the Pandy Inn!).

As a child

Ceesnan Mon 31-Aug-15 18:57:24

Luckygirl can I ask if you are a long term local? My family home was there and I am just wondering whether I knew you asca child?

The pub at Llanthony Priory is very cold. Stone floors. Sometimes old-authentic can go too far.

rosequartz Mon 31-Aug-15 18:05:54

Sorry, the link was meant to be about the road, B4423, from Abergavenny to Hay-on-Wye past Llanthony Priory (a bit hair-raising but worth it!)

This is a wonderful trip if it is not too far out of your way:

We sat on Hay Bluff and watched the hang gliders taking off near us.

Hope you have a good time.
The weather will probably be wonderful - because the children will have gone back to school.

Fabulous food (well, the last time we were there) at The Lough Pool, think they might do rooms as well?

Teetime Mon 31-Aug-15 17:49:06

Thank you yes I'm keen to go to Hay and Symonds Yat- we are very much looking forward to some good big walks and some good big dinners.

rosequartz Mon 31-Aug-15 17:46:02

ps The Wye Valley is about 130 miles long, so plenty of scope! grin

rosequartz Mon 31-Aug-15 17:35:33

It depends whereabouts in the Wye Valley you would like to be, Teetime

Someone I know just had a lovely weekend at The Pandy Inn near Hay-on-Wye; haven't been myself but I am tempted to go from their description of it.

durhamjen Mon 31-Aug-15 14:53:11

In Ross-on-Wye?
Do not know anything about it, but I like Ross, and Hay, and Monmouth.

Have a nice break.

Teetime Mon 31-Aug-15 14:10:09

Thank you for your thoughts we are booked into The Chase now please don't tell me anything horrible about it. smile

durhamjen Mon 31-Aug-15 11:48:38

stay, not say, although we do talk a lot.

durhamjen Mon 31-Aug-15 11:38:07

My brother in law lives in Chepstow. That's not far from Symond's Yat, has a castle and lots of B&Bs and hotels. Can't recommend one because we always say with him and his wife.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 31-Aug-15 11:30:37

Sod off jd

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 31-Aug-15 11:30:15

Anyway, you don't have to go on the ferry - you can drive round to the other side. Or there is a lovely footpath walk up to the rock from near the Saracens. Do NOT be put off Symonds Yat because someone stumbled!!! It's a beautiful area.

durhamjen Mon 31-Aug-15 11:28:48

Not nice, jingl.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 31-Aug-15 11:25:12

Oh for goodness sake! You can see for yourself what you are letting yourself in for before you get on the ferry! hmm (grandsons (and me) love it)

Luckygirl Mon 31-Aug-15 11:20:38

I live in Herefordshire and would never go near the Saracens Head - I am sure it is a lovely pub (we had a great meal there) but it was on the rope ferry outside this pub 3 years ago that I fell and sustained a very complicated fracture of my foot that has never healed and means I walk with a stick - so I never go near Symonds Yat!! And when I tried to make a claim, the people in the pub lied through their teeth in order to wriggle out of their responsibility. So.....not my favourite place!!

For self-catering try: www.farrcottages.co.uk/ or treago.co.uk/ (a castle with cottages in the grounds and a swimming pool.

For B&B try: www.bedandbreakfastinherefordshire.info/Profile_HR172-Dippersmoor-Manor-Accommodation-in-Kilpeck-Hereford or www.garwaymooninn.co.uk/

Personally I would not go for Ross-on-Wye. I know it has been bigged up, but as a local, who worked there at one time, I have to say that it does not impress me - and it has a huge drugs problem hidden beneath the chocolate box image.

Might I suggest that you widen your scope to include Hay-on-Wye - it is itself an interesting town - as you will probably know it is one vast second hand bookshop; it has a castle; and, above all else, the surrounding scenery is astounding - you have instant and easy access to the Black Mountains, whose scenery is quite stunning.

I hope you find something you like and wish you a happy holiday.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 31-Aug-15 10:43:10

Oh! Looks like they are booked up for next week. sad

Anniebach Mon 31-Aug-15 10:40:55

I agree with jingle
