Staycation anyone?

With exchange rates, fears over security, general gloominess, hotter weather, it is reported that the British travel industry is hoping for an upturn as more people shun travelling abroad and are holidaying in the UK. I had 2 lovely weeks in Western Scotland and the islands earlier in the year and we were blessed with good weather(unusual), but I can't imagine people who may like a hotel on the Costas would have enjoyed the solitude, lack of restaurants, high prices in the Outer Hebrides. We are going to a wedding in France later in the month, but we are just going there and back and not extending our stay as we may have done . My OH now insists on going to the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales, when in the past we may have headed off to sunnier climes. Anyone else find they are holidaying at home when they would have been thinking of further afield? What do you do when it is cold/ wet? Is it any cheaper?

We've had a couple of lovely breaks this year Nottingham to visit family and Devon with all our grown up grands, OH and I usually have a couple of UK breaks each year as he doesn't fly but I usually manage to join one of my daughters to a trip to the sun somewhere and visit my son who lives abroad but I'm waiting on a THR at the moment and too much walking gets painful so until I have the surgery (who knows when) I will staycation.. we plan on another week somewhere in Sept. I do find that a week here or abroad is pretty similar in cost.

We too once went over the Severn bridge by accident my excuse was the terrible signposting while there were roadworks on the M5 grin

Having had so many holidays abroad, like you KatyK getting tired of airports. Will have a Cornish holiday in Sept and next year, if we feel the same, it will be the Lakes here in UK.Must be good for our tourist industry.smile

Never mind going on the Severn Bridge, our Sat Nav took us off the M25 this weekend only to bring us straight back on it at the same junction just a couple of hundred yards up the motorway. No reason for it. Trouble was, everyone else was doing the same thing following the orders given!

KatyK Sun 24-Jul-16 15:58:21

How lovely roses I love Cornwall and the Lakes smile Watching those poor folk on the news queueing for 15 hours to cross the channel, hasn't changed our minds!

We have just enjoyed a few days touring the West coast of Scotland with our son and daughter in law. We were always going to count it as a bonus if the sun shone and packed the wet weather gear along with the t shirts! It was so lovely not to be hampered by any airline weight restrictions, and to just chuck everything into the car, including the dog. The sun did shine for the most part, but on one truly horrendous evening, we lit the wood burner and poured over a jigsaw. Thoroughly enjoyed our staycation. [ smile ]

Our last holiday abroad was to Berlin to stay with a friend who worked there. It was 1990....the year after the Berlin wall came down. So visiting East Berlin and driving through East Germany was very interesting. Since my early retirement
a few years after then weve always had a dog and have always taken him... and later her...away with us on self catering holidays West Wales is our favourite destination because there are many unspoilt non touristy places and beaches to enjoy. smilewinesmile And yes....weve had many sunny weeks there too !!

Greyduster Sun 24-Jul-16 20:04:57

I agree with bez about West Wales having unspoilt non touristy places and uncrowded beaches. We've been going for years and the weather has mostly always been kind to us. But we have always managed to avoid the school holidays. This year we can't and it's going to be interesting to see what a difference it makes to the uncrowded beaches.

Live at the seaside, so who needs holidays. Sunny and dry part of the country with lovely surrounding and lots to do. If we do go away I can't wait to go home.

Someone's enjoying his staycation a lot!

West Wales...into Wales via M50 and M4.
Out of Wales....M4 and M5. Cross the lovely Severn Bridge with no charge !!
Cant ever understand why theres an ever increasing charge to go into Wales. The residents of that country dont seem to benefit from the revenue.

It will be coming down (apparently) in a couple of years which will be a relief when visiting family!!

Maggiemaybe, flights between Newquay and Leeds start again on the 28th October, 3 times a week. Quite why they are winter only is anyone's guess!

Off to Devon for our usual week/ fortnight in August. We have had rain, hail, wind, fog and freezing cold weather. It's a lottery and not nice to be trapped by the inclement conditions but it is always beautiful and it only takes three hours to get there if we go at the right time. We live frugally there and go often. When we arrive we say to ourselves that we would hardly be on the plane by the time we are on Lyme Regis sea front. Swings and roundabouts.

Lillie Sun 24-Jul-16 22:47:57

Correct whitewave, and Prince Charles was there last week too!

To those who asked WHY there is a toll on the Severn Bridge, the reason is that it was built under the infamous DBFO (Design-Build-Finance-Operate) initiative. Put simply, the Bridge is owned by a private company who paid for its construction and in return receive the tolls which they collect. The tolls will only be removed when they have recouped their costs.

Jalima Mon 25-Jul-16 10:20:59

The Severn Bridge was government funded but the Second Severn Crossing was built by a consortium which also took over the original Severn Bridge, its maintenance and any debt remaining on it.
The toll is set by an Act of Parliament and goes up every year on 1 January.

I love the first Severn Bridge - it is beautiful.

We go to festivals..just got back from our 9th..several more to go. Have the camper van,so live isn't too rough ! Love meeting up with old friends and meeting new ones .

We have just booked a week in Orkney. When you add up the petrol, ferry, and hotel accommodation it is going to cost three times the amount of the week we had in Morocco this spring. Ooooh I've just remembered the Morocco holiday was all inclusive. Superb food and any drinks you wanted, all water sports entertainment and guaranteed sunshine! Looks like it is going to cost four times the Moroccan holiday ?

I love travelling and we have done a lot of it-long haul and city breaks- since retiring but DH increasingly not keen. So I am going to Japan with DD2 and Cuba with DD1.We had a week in Kent at the end of Aprik and the weather was awful Going to Lake District with DDs in Oct. Fingers crossed as have always been lucky with weather there ButUK holidays are so expensive comparatively .The Lakes cottage is nearly £700 in late Oct (not half term) And a recent stay in York, admittedly in a nice hotel, cost us as much as a short European citybreak would have .
Our family holidays for 34 years have been to Cornwall in all sorts of weather and it is our 'happy place'

Maggiemaybe Mon 25-Jul-16 14:15:50

Thanks for the info re the Leeds/Newquay flights, chrissie13, that is good news. Maybe they'll really take off grin and be reinstated for next Summer. Fingers crossed!

Jalima Mon 25-Jul-16 14:27:19

It's the 50th aniversary of the opening of the Severn Bridge this year Luckygirl

KatyK Mon 25-Jul-16 15:47:39

We loved Port Isaac. We happened to be there when they were filming Doc Martin. Martin Clunes was very courteous to everyone smile

whitewave Mon 25-Jul-16 18:55:42

my family village is Delabole just up the road from Port Isaac, and we had relatives from there as well. Named Honey.
