My passport is due to be renewed.
I doubt if I shall be travelling abroad again.
Mainly due to high health insurance charges.
I have a few health issues, and getting on in years.

I went to Paris last year. I didn't take out insurance just took my E.U. card.
Due to Brexit, we won't have this choice.

So I would appreciate your opinions please, on my predicament.

Mine and H's ran out last month and we haven't renewed them as we don't intend going abroad again but you have got me thinking.

I have to have a passport because I would be illegal roaming around here in Germany without any ID.

To reply to the question above regarding renewing your passport well in advance of its expiry date, I don't think that's a problem. You have to return your old passport so you will not have two at the same time, and for many countries it is important that your passport is still valid for 6 months.

The only disadvantage is the cost.

House selling and buying can require passport ID.

Just been into the solicitors to show them my driving license AND passport. I handed them over to the receptionist that I’ve know for years. I should have asked her what would happen if I had had neither.

inge what you have posted is sheer rubbish re registration with a GP. Who on earth told you that? Get in touch with your local CAB or local Healthwatch and stop repeating this and worrying people.

I was going to say something similar maryeliza. inge what about your birth certificate, pension payments - which will be able to tell you your Ni number, do you get cold weather payments? It's a silly thing to say.

Call Health Watch!

IngeJones, from where did you get that doctor/passport information? I hope you aren't just trying to get your political view across while possibly worrying other GNs.

A friend of mine who did not have a passport or a driving licence had to get a signed affidavit from his solicitor when an insurance company that he’d paid into for years wouldn’t release his money until he’d proved his identity. What a palaver! I think I’ll renew my passport when it expires just in case I need ID.

I decided not to bother to renew my passport in June, I have a significant birthday in January.....my family have been very keen for me to renew my passport! Renew it, you never know what might happen!!!

grannysue05 Wed 29-Nov-17 13:07:24

Surely an expired passport will prove your I.D.
It has your photo and address and date of birth.

Having just been caught out on this issue.... could i just remind everyone that the EHIC plastic card is RENEWABLE....

I certainly forgot until scrutinising the card yesterday... out of date ... holiday on Friday .... so renewed on line (£35 for two) and travelling with the out of date card and travel insurance...

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 13:14:06

Aaaahhhhhh- you paid? You were scammed by a look a like website. Oh dear Tell

But, it's out of date grannysue!

As others have mentioned, a passport is very useful for ID. My mother always kept hers for this purpose as she had no driving licence. She reached her 93rd birthday.

grannysue05 Wed 29-Nov-17 13:22:19

Kitty ...I was thinking that all your information has not changed except possibly your address.
If you had moved house in (say) year five of your old passport, that very passport would still be suitable I.D.

TellNo1Ok Wed 29-Nov-17 13:25:24

Oh I don't believe it..... how stupid am i... this holiday is fated... (Malta)

Since October I have had a nasty fall = two black eyes... have had hip problem and now have virus related ear problems and unless ear problem sorted by tomorrow afternoon, i can't fly!!!

And i pride myself on not getting scammed... !!

kittylester Wed 29-Nov-17 13:26:41

I don't think it works like that though. You may also have to take utility bills or other proof of address.

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 13:30:01

Tell I think it’s absolutely dreadful that these sites are not closed down. It’s so easy to be taken in as they look very official. I posted about it just in case anyone else was about to renew. The last person I knew who did this was my lovely hairdresser - on a low income,I was so upset for her. It’s really wicked

maryeliza54 Wed 29-Nov-17 13:32:37

We can all get scammed - the scammers are always one step ahead of us and whilst I like to think I am careful, I never say never re scamming

HillyN Wed 29-Nov-17 13:32:46

There is no address on a passport.

TellNo1Ok Wed 29-Nov-17 13:39:36

I have given all sorts of details in the scam...
date of birth... National Insur number ... address.... phone number ...
Should i tell someone ... like my banks... ?

Marianne1953 Wed 29-Nov-17 13:40:41

The EU card will not be necessarily extinct after Brexit, as that will be down to negotiation. Switzerland is not an EU country and that is covered by the EU card

BlueBelle Wed 29-Nov-17 13:45:58

Yoga Gran I don’t know how recently you have flown to Scotland without a passport but I can assure you my parents had a photo ID card each but were not allowed on the plane so unless it’s relaxed or with a different airline this was Ryanair
