How many of you have had holidays cancelled?

Our holiday was cancelled due to the 'current situation'. We booked through Teletext Holidays and have received one communication stating that we would receive a full refund but due to ... dah-di dah-di dah .... (you know how it goes) but silence ever since. Requests for an update by email or phone go unanswered.
We are not unreasonable, but its now 4 weeks since the proposed start of the holiday, (and even longer since we booked and paid for it) I'd have thought we should be coming to the front of the queue by now.
Today we've had a communication from Ryan Air offering a voucher, but as the whole holiday was arranged through the travel agent as a package, surely we should be dealing them - not the airline? There doesn't seem to be a way of contacting Ryan Air direct on their webpage to ask them.
Should we just be patient or is it time to start making a nuisance of ourselves in order to be heard?
Advice needed.

We were planning a big trip for later this year, just couldn't decide where to go. For once I'm glad that we always take so long to make our minds up where to go. We also had a family stay booked over Easter which we've managed to reschedule for the same time next year.

I am also awaiting a refund but have at least got it in writing that they will refund the money.

If I definitely thought we could go abroad for holidays next year and the travel company would not become bankrupt, I might have agreed to transfer the booking until 2021.

I am not confident that holidays abroad will be permitted next year - holidays are different from business trips or trips to see relatives. I do honestly wonder about the future of package holidays.

We have been told by Virgin Atlantic that our flights to and from Washington have been cancelled, no surprise there. They directed us to their website, which gives information about rebooking and vouchers but no mention of a refund but I’ve asked for one anyway as I believe we are legally entitled.
We are also booked on a river cruise in the autumn with Viking. We have only paid the deposit and have to pay the balance by July. They are being very generous with rebooking terms but again no mention of a refund. We will have to decide between losing our deposit or risking paying the full amount and claiming a refund if the cruise is cancelled or rebooking, but what happens if the company goes bankrupt? 1st world problems like this however are nothing in comparison to those who have lost loved ones.

We have flights booked to Canada on 30th September. I don’t know what to think, will it be safe to travel then? Will it be safe to tour the area we are supposed to be visiting? My gut feeling is no, but I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. We haven’t booked any hotels yet, so at least that’s not a problem. The flights are with BA, maybe we can change them for next year.

They are legally bound to give you a refund. It is no use accepting vouchers, as the travel firm could go bust and you have lost all that money.

We should be in northern Italy now, celebrating my 70th birthday with my daughter and her family who live there. Booked with Ryanair who at first told us we could have a refund, but yesterday we had a voucher instead. We are going to fight it as we want the money back, and then rebook when we know it’s safe to do so. We are waiting to see whether our holiday to Cornwall in June will happen or not, but we suspect not.

we had our holiday cancelled by our travel company but offered a complete refund, re book now for next year or re book by the end of this year. We re booked for next year and was also given a generous discount to be taken off the total cost of the holiday.

There was a discussion Victoria Derbyshire this morning about this, and many people have been offered credit vouchers etc. However, you don’t have to accept credit - you are legally entitled to,a complete refund. Good luck.

We are booked for a TA cruise in October. We have no idea whether or not it will be cancelled. I think we will have to pay the balance which is due in June and just hope for a refund if it is cancelled. I wonder if by October cruises will be sailing again.

Minimoon I feel your pain! We too had planned a 4 day trip to New York Sept 16th then cruising New England with Princess Sky. Just like you I now do not wish to travel for all the obvious reasons and hope to get the cruise transferred to 2021/22. Not hopeful though! Congrats on your forthcoming special birthdays!

We like everyone else had our holiday cancelled. The legal page in the Daily Mail states "Under the Package Travel Regulations (2018) if you booked your holiday before 16/4/20 then you are due a full refund paid within 14 days of cancellation".

BUT after several emails and telephone calls I have not received a refund even though I have quoted the above. The travel company have said they are awaiting instructions from the government. So still out of pocket.

Booked to go to St Lucia in June and had paid £500 deposit with a travel agent recommended to me by friends. At the beginning of April the balance was due. The agent said if I paid in full and the holiday was cancelled due to not being able to fly I would get a full refund. however, I was not prepared to pay the balance. In the end I suggested they kept the deposit and rescheduled the holiday to 2021 and put the deposit toward that. No problem. At least I now have something to look forward to! For me it was the right decision.

There was a section on BBC breakfast about this very thing this morning. Was in last hour of the prog. Watch it on iPlayer as it answered questions exactly like yours.

I'm booked to go to Tenerife with Tui in early June. I haven't cancelled as I assume it's best not to. Hopefully I will get a refund or a voucher...

My problem is that the whole holiday was booked through Teletext who are ignoring my requests for a refund.
Now I have been contacted by Ryan Air, and although they were booked by the travel agent (not me directly) are offering me a choice of voucher OR refund directly.
My quandary is - I paid my money to Teletext who used Ryan Air as the carriers - but the airline is offering to refund my money direct to me.
Does that mean I will then have to deal with the hotel myself, and the transfer firm who were booked to take us from the airport to the hotel?
I cannot get any information from Teletext, and I'm confused.

If you booked with a travel agent speak to them. Mine are working from home and have kept me up to date. You are entitled to a full refund. speak to the travel agents/

If your flight is cancelled you are entitled to a full refund; don't be bamboozled into accepting a voucher, some airlines might try it on but if you ask for a refund they are have a legal duty to oblige

We had a trip to Asia booked, leaving in March and have postponed it so haven't lost too much. BA have just cancelled flights to Barcelona that we should have taken at the end of next month - the email offered a voucher but if you wanted a refund you had to call. As the trip may well be re-arranged but we don't know when we've gone for the refund. If the airline/travel company cancels I think they have to offer a refund, not just vouchers

GrandmaFrench I also have a holiday cottage which I manage myself. I haven’t refunded deposits - all my visitors nowadays are repeat customers and are happy to amend their bookings when the time comes. There are still bills to pay and I’m quite grateful that overheads will be covered despite the lack of ongoing income.

Supposed to go to Santorini for two weeks in mid June. We’ve not contacted EasyJet nor the villa company and haven’t heard anything from either of them as yet, I think we will contact them next week to see what’s happening regarding refunds or moving the dates.

We were supposed to be going to Argyll in March, which we managed to change for November for no extra cost. We’re also supposed to be going in August, I’ve got my fingers crossed that we may be able to go then. Who knows?

Mauriherb Wed 22-Apr-20 10:38:48

We should have been going on holiday today, it was cancelled several weeks ago but all we have been offered is a voucher for two thirds of what we paid. I have contacted the credit card company who have said they will be in touch within 6 weeks. We would have happily accepted a deferral to next year but this was not offered

Chardy Wed 22-Apr-20 10:38:35

There was something about this on R4 Today programme about 7am. They said the rule is 2 weeks but TUI and Jet2 wanted extended to 4 weeks

Mrsdof Wed 22-Apr-20 10:37:52

We had a holiday booked for 8 April to Southern States of USA with a reputable company (Riviera) which I had been recommended by a number of'people. They initially told us we could have a full refund but then after 2 weeks were told they weren’t giving refunds but would give a travel voucher, which we do not want. Martin Lewis’ website has some excellent advice and we are hoping that by refusing the voucher we will eventually get a full refund but when - who knows. We have written again explaining why a voucher is of no use to us and are now awaiting a reply - that was 3 weeks ago but heard nothing, we are trying to be patient!

Have so far had 3 holiday cancellations, 2 to Gran Canaria (sandstorm & virus) with Jet2 & received full refunds within a few days. The 3rd was for a few days in Cardiff a few days ago via booking.com paid up front on the cheaper no cancellation refund option but actually have been refunded in full. I will make a point of rebooking with them in future
