I cannot find my previous thread which I promised to update. It has taken me weeks and an unbelievable amount of stress but finally last week we accepted a quote and now I can sleep peacefully at last.
Pre covid I had a free annual policy courtesy of HSB Premier Account. Almost two years of no travel and I am now 72. My OH is 75 and for the last 5 years has purchased annual travel Insurance for under £400.
We both have preexisting conditions. Mine involved a hospital stay 70 years ago with tachycardia. Since then I have never again been hospitalised with the condition I simply take a beta blocker. OH had one stent fitted about six years ago, hasn’t had any chest pains since and was prescribed a statin and a beta blocker. Both of us are very healthy for our ages. Simple you would think.
The first quotes were in the region of £5000 for the two of us, some companies refused to quote at all.
I tried single trip coverage which illogically costs more than an annual policy.
I used all the recommendations given to me by fellow gransnetters and finally whittled it down to Staysure at £956 and Allclear at £1084. I called both companies to see if I could talk to a doctor or nurse to try to get the premiums down.
A Staysure advisor eventually transferred me to another company under their umbrella which could me a competitive quote. Going under the name “Payingtoomuch” the did a search and the best quote to fit my needs came in at £693 for the two of us. Huge relief. My partner is now paying less than pre covid!
I did of course check out the company I eventually decided to go with and they score even higher on Trustpilot than Staysure.

So, if you need travel insurance do shop around but be sure to include “Payingtoomuch” online or by calling them on 01243219979.
I hope I have been of help.

Esspee, what a laugh:

'Both of us are very healthy for our ages'

Really?

Thanks for the advice. I've been shopping around for European cover for the two of us and I too have found it very expensive, plus some companies that quoted previously, now decline to quote despite us being healthy. It appears that my husband turning 70 is the problem. I'll definitely use "payingtoomuch"when I start my next search.

I’ve been looking at the cost of European cover for me but cannot fine a company willing to give me a quote! I have tried Payingtoomuch as well as comparison sites and direct contact to about 20 companies.

As soon as I admit that I had a TIA earlier this year ( not sure exactly when we only diagnosed following an eye test) and am attending both the eye hospital and checkups at the stroke clinic, they refuse a quote. I also have high blood pressure and also slightly high cholesterol so apart from bp medication, I am now on statins and blood thinners. Oh, I also take strong pain killers for oesteoarthritis!

I guess I am just a ticking time bomb! But when I booked the holiday in 2019 ( postponed twice now) my bp was under control with just two medications and I only had to pay a small extra premium.

I’m beginning to wonder if I will ever be able to go abroad again - my grandchildren live in the US so I was hoping to go there next year as well.

How nasty. Happy to challenge you to a few days sailing followed by 15 mile walks.

I too thought that was a nasty comment Hetty58 as Esspee had explained they’d had years and years with no problems and only minimal medications needed nowadays.

Hetty58 Mon 11-Oct-21 09:48:40

No malice intended, I just thought it was funny Esspee - the pre-existing conditions and problems getting insurance - then the 'healthy' comment. I was also laughing at the 'post -Covid' - when exactly will that be do you think?

Georgesgran Mon 11-Oct-21 09:50:59

Well said Urms.
I know many folk who appear much fitter and more active than me and am surprised when they reveal a major health problem in the past, that was ‘sorted’ at the time and needs no further attention bar a few pills.
Pre-Covid and a smidge under 70 - I loved my trips to New York, but now (70 this year) wonder if I’ll ever see The Big Apple again.

Crossed posts H58. It’s the written word again, isn’t it? X

Thanks for the info Esspee. We hope to visit our US-based son & family again at some point, though probably not until 2023. Travel ins at £5000 would mean it’s probably cheaper for them to come to us. I love our trips to the US and would be very sad not to go again.

Esspee Mon 11-Oct-21 13:22:46

When it gets to the stage I can’t travel SueDonim I intend to subsidise my grandchildren coming to me as my husband did with my parents.
My family is proud working class and refused help. My husband was very smart and asked if he could pay for his mother-in-law as we needed her help. (to persuade them to accept the money although that was never mentioned) This resulted in them being able to spend each winter in the Caribbean and enriched their (and our) lives immeasurably.

SueDonim Mon 11-Oct-21 13:30:35

Win:win, Esspee! I can understand parents being reluctant to accept money from their children, we all have our pride, but as you show, it’s a mutual benefit. smile
