Cruises - CDC says avoid cruises

Friends have just been on a Cruise and both came back with Covid.

As I said before, I have never been on a cruise, and truly don't fancy it at all. Visiting Split and Dubrovnik last week confirmed this. Seeing all these monsters stacked up against one another in the harbour, blocking the view of the Islands to all the other tourists, made me quite annoyed.

Our Tour guides said they just hate them, but that the locals have no choice but to accept them for the money they bring in.

Of course we could stay at home. DH and I could drive our cars, consume electricity and gas and foul the environment with our rubbish etc. Scale that up to the thousands of passengers potentially on some cruise ships if they stayed at home too I suspect it would be about the same pollution as a cruise ship.

Well, I have two cruises booked - one in August this year, and another July next year. I'm not worried as I know I will be well looked after and infection control is excellent on this cruise line.

The cruise experience is immensly varied, and can vary from a motor cruiser on the Norfolk Broads, through a small boat (converted fishing boat) with perhaps 10-15 passengers, touring the Scottish islands, to river cruisers and every other permutatation and combination of ships, to humungous great ships, which house 10,000 passengers.

Some probably are floating hotels, the majority aren't.

Personally, a holiday sitting by a lovely pool, no matter how good or bad the hotel, holds no appeal.

Isn't it true though, Aveline, cruise ships have big carbon footprints?

Also …a thought: cruise liners use 80,000 litres of fuel a day. Naughty people!

Never been a cruiser …never will! It’s a floating hotel isn’t it….. so why not choose a nice hotel with a lovely pool and sit by it. Cheaper too!

MOnica I returned from a cruise to the fjords on QM2 on Sunday. You’ll love it! The ship is comfortable and spacious and the food and entertainment are first class. Seeing the fjords was amazing. It’s a truly beautiful area and the Norwegians are so friendly and helpful. The sea was mostly calm or slight apart from a couple of short windy moments. Nothing that would cause seasickness. Have your tablets ready and take them early if you’re concerned about the sea. I’d go back in a heartbeat! Hope you have a wonderful time!

You could be lucky and have calm seas. I think the Spring and Autumn are worse for rough sea.
The other tip for avoiding sea sickness is - sit under a tree!

Take some Stugeron tablets. They help me. Once you're across the North Sea you should be fine.

Thank you for the tip, I have bought some of the sea sick bands will put them on my list.

(Before we could drive onto the Eurostar, Dover to Calais would see me in the loo or curled up in the upper most deck in all weathers)

I am off on my very first cruise next month. We are going with friends to the Norwegian Fjords sailing from Southampton.

Not being away for two and a half years we have splashed out on a suite with a very large balcony. I am looking forward to the luxury, exploring a new (to me) Country but not being on the sea .

My US based brother is visiting now he has to pass a Covid test before he can fly home, they still have that rule unless you are an illegal migrant.

My dog walking friend has recently returned from a cruise and on return warned me to stay on the other side of the road as he felt unwell - I haven't seen him since.

I was tempted to go on a TUI cruise, but having seen how they treat their customers, wouldn't risk it.

You will love Norway M0nica. One of my best ever cruise mornings was opening the curtains and seeing the view up a fjord. It was wonderful.
I'm not so keen on those very big ships though. Maybe this cruise will inspire you to try others? It's addictive?

Off to Norway in September in Cunard QM2. First cruise, and will probably be my last, one way or another. Cruises do not appeal to me - and I am prone to seasickness, - but we had a day visit to the ship and loved the 5 star luxury and thought we would like to experience it.

As far as I am concerned I would enjoy the experience if the ship was moored up in Southampton for the week. or just circled the Isle of Wight.

We have been to across to France at least half a dozen times in the last year and the journey (via Brittany Ferries) has gone from being a hassle with tests both ends and lots of paperwork, to back to normal. We go again next week and the last COVID rule, wearing masks in public places on the ship will have gone. The journey - and stay in France - will be exactly as it was pre-CVID

I’m counting down the days for a voyage on my favourite ship to my favourite destination after a 2 year gap due to covid. I’m off on the Stena ferry to Ireland and I can’t wait.

Well said aonk could not agree more. I am off in two weeks time, one which was cancelled in 2020, can't wait. Would mention my daughter went in January with no problems. Have two more to look forward to also cancelled. I am disabled and find it a perfect way to travel the World.

I've been on a few cruises. Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Enjoyed both but in no rush to cruise again anytime soon with the after effects of covid still lingering

Back from one and already booked for next year.

I don’t really I understand why this thread has reappeared. I don’t think people should decide whether or not they like something until they have tried it. If they don’t like cruising afterwards that’s fine. After all you won’t catch me going camping or staying in a remote cottage and yes I have tried these.
Many of the anti cruise posts on here are full of misconceptions and the same old platitudes are trotted out again and again. In my view you’re no more likely to catch covid on a ship than in a supermarket, restaurant or other public place. I returned from a wonderful cruise to Norway on Sunday after going on one to the Middle East in March. These 2 were cancelled trips from 2020 and 2021. I’m lucky enough to br going on another in August. I’ve been on over 15 in total and have never known any cases of norovirus although I know it can happen. It’s gets into the papers because it’s so rare that it makes news! Please stop condemning something that so many people enjoy.
