Would you? We’ve cancelled our Easter visit. Do you think the riots will have stopped before May?

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-23 13:50:07

We are in Normandy and I can only say that we have not witnessed any problems and have only been mildly inconvenienced from time to time.
We have avoided the centre of our local city on strike days (usually only one a week) and have sometimes had to find alternative routes around the ring road. Public transport has been disrupted but our rubbish has been collected as normal.
If you are in the centre of Bordeaux and there are still big strike days, then you would need to avoid the marches, but the préfecture will give advance information and close off the route.
This site tells you about strikes that are planned.

There are some fuel shortages up here, but we haven't seen any big queues. (We have an electric car).
I suspect it will be over by May, but obviously I don't know.
🤞for you.

What bit, Mollygo?
We're in the same boat..... but we're not in a boat at all because the ferry isn't sailing due to the dockers in Saint Malo striking. Also the pêcheurs are now joining in. What worries me is that we won't get the fish we have on our menu for Easter! I've heard the fish counters in Breton supermarkets might come out in sympathy.
It's all so annoying, I think we're close to giving up.
Mamie has been very helpful giving links and reassurances. Merci.
Joking apart, how much longer can this carry on in France?

Joseanne Thu 30-Mar-23 14:02:39

I want it sorted by May because we've got the dog with us then and that's extra hassle with ferry timings and all the vet visits.

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-23 14:07:22

Not very helpful, but this is an interesting John Lichfield article.

Interesting article.
I'm not surprised the police are getting rather het up about it all. I'm guessing Macron is hoping that the public at large will start to turn against the demonstrators and lose sympathy.
Surely businesses in France are suffering which will have a knock on effect?

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-23 14:42:55

I think mostly the demo numbers are diminishing. The Borne government needs to make a better job of explaining the alternatives.
I suspect it will all die down with the holidays on the way. Sorry to hear about St Malo - could you swap to Ouistreham? It is blocked on strike days, but normally only Tuesdays or Thursday. On Tuesday only Roscoff was open. Next week's strike day is Thursday.

In Brittany at the moment have not witnessed any protests.
Life is carrying on as normal.

Cherrytree59 Thu 30-Mar-23 15:36:38

Ps My sister is carrying onto Normandy in next few days.
Friends have just returned from
Il de re, nr La Rochelle and have not witnessed any protests.

Cherrytree59 Thu 30-Mar-23 15:38:13

We arrived by channel tunnel, again no problem or disruption.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 30-Mar-23 15:41:22

Are there protests in Lille? I would expect some but of course the news we get is limited. Hoping to be there at some point in May or June.

Fleurpepper Thu 30-Mar-23 15:48:23

How do you intend to travel, car + ferry, car+ tunnel, train or plane?

Do you still ork or could you afford getting stuck somewhere for a few days?

Wheniwasyourage Thu 30-Mar-23 15:52:29

I assume that question was directed at Mollygo, Fleurpepper, but we travel by Eurostar with no car to worry about. As you suggest, being retired takes off some of the pressure if there are insurmountable delays!

Fleurpepper Thu 30-Mar-23 16:28:58

Yes OP, Mollygro. We have at times travelled knowing there could be some issues and delays, and accepted that if we got stuck, so be it. We would book in Hôtel or B&B and wait until ok or safe.

Yes I still teach. No I couldn’t risk being stranded. We were flying to stay with friends we made whilst at Bordeaux Uni.

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-23 16:39:40

You need to look at cestlagreve.fr mollygo. There are strikes affecting airports and they are listed there.

Mamie Thu 30-Mar-23 16:41:51

Although if it is May nobody knows at this stage.

mokryna Thu 30-Mar-23 16:57:07

I will be flying to Manchester in the middle of May, I think hope everything thing on both sides of the channel will have cleared up by then, 🤞

Fleurpepper Thu 30-Mar-23 17:27:02

This ... no-one can predict what will happen by then.

Thanks Mamie. I wasn’t aware of
