Crete or Rhodes? Or there again Cyprus

These seem to be our holiday choices this summer. We like to go from our regional airport and we have done all the Balearic islands countless times, several of the Canaries, Malta, Portugal, mainland Spain, Corfu and Croatia. So these plus Turkey are the only options left. We don’t want to go to Turkey.

We have been to Corfu several times and after a few years returned last year but felt it was rather run down.

Is there much to choose between Crete and Rhodes? Or should we consider Cyprus? I don’t like flights over 4 hours so these are our choices. Thanks

If my memory is right I’m sure a friend of mine told me that either the north or south of Rhodes is very windy and is to be avoided! But I could be thinking of another island: it was a long time ago that she told me. I’m biased towards Crete because it is one of my favourite places in the world and I’d love to go back there. We used to go to Chania. I love all the old Venetian parts of Crete and there was always a gentle breeze which made the heat bearable. We went to Cyprus in the summer and it was incredibly hot but, from being disappointed in the place it grew on me.

You haven't mentioned Sicily, but you've probably been there. We've been 3 times and are planning to go again. Also mainland Italy is hugely varied. Clive Myrie has a travel series on Italy on BBC at the moment - every evening at 6-30.

Rhodes has some lovely parts, but the south gets very hot in the summer and some of the resorts are a bit tired. If you want a real step back in time fly to Rhodes and take the ferry to Simi. It's a lovely little island but very hilly, but it has many of the features of Greece years ago, little tavernas in quiet bays.
Only did Crete once and found some bits overcrowded but great for historical interest.
Have you thought about Madeira? Gorgeous island, quite hilly but lovely gardens and scenery.
I think Cyprus will be very hot in summer.

I’ve been to all three of the islands you’re considering, and Rhodes is my favourite, followed by Cyprus. The wind is in the west of Rhodes, but it’s very welcome, and great for water sports in the summer. Rhodes town is beautiful, the street of the knights particularly, and Lindos is also very pretty - neither of them are in the west.

Been to cyprus many times but always off season ( oct/nov) when its still warm enough to swim, but not too hot to have a decent walk.
Visited Rhodes and really liked rhodes town and Lindos too but the beach our hotel was on was stony! Which was very disappointing as I was assured it was a sandy beach.

Even to all of these and like the all.I think I would pick Crete or Cyprus, added bonus of Cyprus is they drive on the same side as us.
Crete is a big Island,it is only the main resorts that are crowded, lots of deserted beaches and quiet villages if you explore.

You mention Croatia,I love it there and only a short flight,Split is stunning,I love sea swimming which Croatia is perfect for.

Have you been to Zadar? Or italian lakes? Or Skiathos? Or Corsica? Or Formentera? All nicer than crete , Rhodes or Cyprus....IMO anyway

Also been to all 3. Crete a couple of times. Not so keen on Cyprus though where we were staying contributed to that. I liked both Crete and Rhodes but there are lots of Greek Islands to choose from. What about Malta? Valletta the capital is very interesting and there are lots of resorts and places of interest. Only went there on a cruise though twice.

I am not well travelled. But have visited Corsica.
We liked it, but had to use our schooldays french more than we had anticipated. Maybe it was the part we were in, I dont know.

The Italian Lakes are stunning and not too hot in the summer.

I travelled to many Greek Islands when I was young my favourite was Crete up in the hills. Piskopiano was a lovely village a fifteen min walk up the hill or five minute taxi ride from Hersonissos.
It was lovely I stayed at a tiny Greek house with a little pool. It might well have changed beyond recognition now but I would like to return. I loved Koutouloufari it had a beautiful beach I might go there once more to see how it is and it will probably be the last holiday abroad. These days I’m not mad about travelling far but I might make the effort as it was beauftiful.
I would go May or September though as I have unpleasant memories of sunstroke when I was young.

Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near Cyprus at the moment.

You can fly to Rhodes and get a ferry to the very lovely Symi. Weve been twice and loved it. Worth a look.

I'd go to Cyprus - but northern Cyprus.

Why not?

We are going in a couple of weeks time, beautiful island, fabulous food and really friendly people.

Northern Cyprus definitely has the best beaches, and I can vouch for the excellent dental and hospital care (adventurous child 🤣)

I think you mentioned that before, Fleupepper

Is there a reason why you don't think it's a good idea to visit?
Asking for a friend - yes, truly, she has booked to go soon.

Where do you go in northern Cyprus GrannyGravy?

Oopsadaisy1 Fri 05-May-23 11:20:28

We are going to Cyprus in June, foreign office has no particular warnings for the South of the Island.
Not sure I would want to go to the North at the moment though, we haven’t been to Cyprus before, so we shall see.

We stayed within walking distance of Kyrenia.

This time we are going to Pathos, have found an adult only suites hotel. Have been before to the hotel as well as its sister hotel several times which is family orientated when we have AC and GC with us.

Glorianny Fri 05-May-23 11:32:50

Northern Cyprus is an occupied country, not recognised by the UN. The foreign office warns they are unable to support British nationals who get into difficulties there.
Cyprus is lovely but fully inform your self before you go.

I think Fleurpepper has probably heard that the Turkish authorities are demanding the removal of the UN troops who currently keep the peace.
