Just a heads up to anyone travelling to or through France. Not to scare travellers, just to be prepared. France is already on highest terror alert warning already, but security has stepped up noticeably. You can expect visible security measures in place, and delays, at the ferry ports, on the ferry, and in crowded tourist places.

Avoid Paris for sure, ferry ports are like Fort Knox already

Best avoid France

Having just come back after a couple of weeks in Burgundy and the area to the South, we didn't see any particular extra security. We went via Eurostar and that had normal security measures.

I found it reassuring to actually see policemen on the street and in cars. There are different levels of security of course within the police and armed forces and you do see armed security personnel patrolling holding machine guns but that's normal.

I wouldn't go anywhere, any longer, France included, where the Olympics or similar were being held. The world has become too risky.

The Olympics run from 26 July - 11th August, so avoid France then.

I agree with Notagranyet that it is reassuring to see a police presence on the street and in cars. It isn't just the Games themselves that present a security risk, but everything associated with them in many locations. The Olympic torch possession route is coming to where we are soon. Apparently the flame will be heavily guarded by over 100 policemen, and the carrier of the torch will be protected by 18 police agents dressed as civilians. I read that although the security forces will be on constant alert for possible terrorist threats, their primary concern is about the risk of environmental groups trying to use the events for publicity purposes. Once the Games start properly in Paris, then yes, possible terrorist threats will be top priority.
