Snootiness about holiday destinations

Is sitting on a busy beach any better than walking round a crowded museum? Is eating local food that your children won't touch better than finding a place that serves the food your children like? Is staying in a gite in rural France better than staying in a hotel complex which has swimming pools, restaurants and entertainment on site? It all depends on what you want for a holiday the snobbery is only relevant when people try to make you feel that your choices are inferior to theirs.

It would be odd if there were not holiday snobbery. The holiday that one chooses tends to show what interests one has.

I don't think it is as simple as that. Someone could be so interested in (eg) ancient civilisations that they become an archeologist and spend their life looking at old bones and artefacts. When they have a week off they might prefer to take their children to Disneyland or something and switch off from it all, and why not?

I am always amused by the pompous snobbery surrounding TV viewing, which is the same sort of thing. That's not meant to be a busman's holiday either, so if someone is exercising their brain all day they might well enjoy 'trash tv' in the evenings. Not everyone gets their education from the gogglebox, although you would think so from some of the comments on soaps, or Big Brother. The last BB thread we had on here had some corkers .

My daughter is the same, she's travelled all over Europe in hers and also to lots of places in the UK. She's currently working at a hospital rather a long distance from where she lives so when she's doing a week of long shifts she parks it in the car park and sleeps in it but when she's off duty and the weather looks good she's off exploring.

There are many lovely Spanish destinations, people are so ridiculously snotty and snooty about what they consider “suitable” holiday destinations.

My view is every holiday is an adventure and everyone’s choices are their choice and it’s fine.

Don’t like a destination? Do go! Don’t judge a place you’ve never set foot in!

As posters have said, we all enjoy different holidays because (thankfully) we are all different. What a boring world it would be if we all liked the same things! Snobbery about holidays is weird isn’t it - as is snobbery in general I suppose. The comment I mentioned in my OP certainly hasn’t put me off Lanzarote or made me feel ‘inferior’ - far from it. Lanzarote is my happy place … and yes Rekarie Papagayo beach is absolutely beautiful (golden sand Primrose).

We have just had a magical week on the Isle of Wight with our teenage grand daughter , there was so much to do. Some people will always be snotty. DD and I love Gran Canaria and go back every year.

We had a day trip to Benidorm when we were staying in another part of Spain. We loved it. Beautiful beaches, cheap bars and cafes, a great market and lots of fun.

My parents, sadly no longer with us, had a couple of wonderful holidays in Benidorm, out of season, in the late 70s/early 80s. We have some lovely photos of them enjoying themselves. 🏖️

The issue is that people can be rather ignorant.

I lived in Lanzarote and a couple of other Canary Isles.

There are so many beautiful and unspoiled areas. Papagayo beach being one of my favourites in Lanzarote.

It's a shame that weird snobbery goes on.

Snobbery is generally practiced by insecure people imo. We had a lovely holiday in Lanzarote back in the late 1990's, tbh I don't remember any black sand, my recollection is pebble beaches a bit windy but unspoiled, it's probably somewhat busier now. Fortunately people's ideas of what constitutes a good holiday are different as indeed is the size of their purse. I also thought there was a lot of snobbery over AR going to Ibiza. She looked to be having a great time, think I might go next year!

When I was there, every now and then a huge silver robot would appear.

Nobody knew if it was remote controlled, or a human inside, but it was about 7ft tall.

It would twirl, and dance, and interact with a few people, then disappear again.

Yes, class and status in modern Britain, an interesting subject.
We can't afford expensive holidays because we have made some mistakes and also supported family.
Because of the dog we spent 3 nights at a caravan site in Essex.
Tremendous value. The dog was happy, lots of ducks to chase and not too far in the car.
And we went to Clacton for the day.
But in some company I keep quiet about that.

Each to their own, we would never go to Benidorm or the Costas. The worst holiday we ever had was a 3 star all inclusive to get away from the kids for a week, bad decision, food was disgusting, lots of noise and children everywhere.

I took my children to Bognor Butlins, probably 25 odd years ago, it was dreadful, purses stolen from the lockers, children running amok, scruffy accommodation, I bribed them to go home early. But it has had significant refurbishment since then and I know friends and family who love it, I possibly would too now.

One year we constantly drove past the gates of a Butlins holiday camp on our way to and from the farmer's field we were stuck staying in.
We begged our parents to take us to Butlins 🤩
"Oh no, that's where the common people go," was my mother's reason excuse for not being able to afford it... 🤨

I still haven't been, but I'm thinking my grandchildren would love it!

I first went to Blackpool when I was six weeks old.
Unfortunately, I don't remember anything about it.

I enjoyed Lanzarotte, loved Berlin, Rome, Paris love any quiet Greek village and love a day out in Blackpool. It’s an hours drive from home, outside main season the dogs can race on the beach and swim. Fish n chips obligatory

I’ve never been to Ibiza but notice our Angela was there in a red frock, dancing in a club at 4am - also noticed snobbery about her and Ibiza 🌞😆

I don’t know why anybody is bothered if somebody is “snooty” about a holiday choice.
As Eleanor Roosevelt said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Some years ago the General Synod or Lambeth Palace or some such part of the C of E organised a conference for bishops etc at Butlins at Minehead..
Our Bish at the time (Southwark) took great pleasure in informing people he was off to Butlins for his hols.

There’s bound to be some snobbery if that’s the right word about holiday destinations.
I mean a choice between the Bahamas or Blackpool, Sorrento or Skegness, London or Preston.I could go on.
