Snootiness about holiday destinations

Do you find there can a be a ā€˜snootiness’ about certain holiday destinations? I was with a group of people recently and mentioned we’re about to go to on holiday to Lanzarote, a place we love. One of the group looked right down her nose and said ā€˜Oh that wouldn’t be my idea of a holiday, but I suppose there’s plenty of fish and chip shops there’! I asked if she’d ever been to Lanzarote … no, she hasn’t; she prefers a gite in rural France.

It seems to me there’s a snobbery about some places. Doesn’t bother me ā€˜cos I love Lanzarote - it’s got far more about it than people realisešŸ˜ŽšŸŒžšŸ’ƒšŸ»

You do you and ignore anyone else. Seems she’s never been so has no experience. We go a different place every year so we can experience lots of different places and cultures. Some I would’nt do again but at least I can speak from experience. Happy hols 😊

My sister and her husband went to Lanzarote for the sea diving. I don't remember her mentioning the fish and chips.

The only experience I have of rural France is staying in a rather crummy gite.

Like Polar22 I tend to go to different places.

Visited Blackpool once whilst up north & it was fabulous fun & very well kept, in contrast to the once agreeable Bournemouth which was very tired & rundown! šŸ¤”

I couldn’t give a stuff what people think. I have been to Lanzarote once but wasn’t keen on the black sand. Obviously so because it is a volcanic island.

I loved all the Caesar Manrique art and was hugely impressed with all the sculptures on the roundabouts.

We love lanzarote, never seen a fish and chip shop there . It's a beautiful island , always clean and I feel safe there 😊

I can't abide that kind of 'snootiness', actually any kind of attitude like that. I can remember a neighbour making a very unkind comment to me when I took my boy's on holiday to Great Yarmouth year's ago....I was a single parent and struggling with finances, we had a week in a caravan there and it was one of the best holidays we've ever had.
The fish and chips were good too!

Oh, yes, there certainly is holiday snobbery, and I find that the disparaging remarks usually come from people who have never been there......or been on a cruise grin. A cousin of mine was previously quietly sneery about my holidays in Spain, until he went there himself and then started telling me how lovely parts of it are....yes, I know!

We all have our idea of a good/bad holiday, all have our own taste.

JaneJudge Sun 01-Sept-24 11:26:37

As long as you enjoy it, it doesn’t matter. Isn’t there a saying about if you went to Tenerife, they’d have been to Elenerife šŸ¤”

What is wrong with fish and chips anyway? If we go on a British holiday the first thing we want to do is eat fish and chips on the beach..or in the car if it’s raining

LizzieDrip that person deserved a scathing follow up remark as she clearly had no idea what she was talking about.

I love Blackpool. It is what it is.

I visited Lytham on the tram while I was up there, very nice but I found it a bit twee.

Fish and chips Yummm

Ah yes,I know what you mean…there is a town which people love to slate because of things they’ve heard but they’ve never been there. I moved to that town last year because I found a lovely, affordable house by the beach,

When I told people I was moving there they were aghast! I got a lot of offish comments from people. The fact is there is an area of the town which has a bad reputation but not the part where I have moved too.

I now spend my time praising this town every chance I get. It deserves it, I love it here and have great neighbours and a 3 min walk to a lovely (non-commercial) beach.

More fool them I say.

JaneJudge Sun 01-Sept-24 11:42:24

Alltogethernow, lots of towns where it isn’t a destination to visit but is a lovely place to live with proper shops-butcher, baker, grocer, market and full of normal ordinary people going about their lives ā¤ļø Give me that over shops that are closed all week and open on weekends

LizzieDrip Sun 01-Sept-24 11:50:11

Thanks for all your commentssmile Yes, we’ve actually travelled more widely than the person I referred to! I wouldn’t dream of making disparaging, derogatory remarks about someone’s choice of holiday destination … particularly if I’d never been there myself. It shows small-mindedness on her part really.

As you say Primrose there’s a great deal of artistic history and culture in Lanzarote which many people just don’t know about, so they go with the lazy ā€˜Lanzagrote’ trope! Hey hošŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

I live in a seaside town that has more than its share of snobbery: Southend on sea šŸ˜‚
When people voice a sniffy remark I point out how many grammar schools we have: 4.

Wow! What a snotty comment from that woman?! You usually find that people like that just regurgitate stuff they have read or heard as no one with original thought would make such a comment. I know lots of retired folks who go down to the Canaries to enjoy the sun and be pain free in the warmth. Whatever floats your boat!

Got stuck in a beer keller in Blackpool back in the 70s when I was a student. A bloke picked me up and walked off with me up the beach. Didn't half enjoy it at the time. Good memories.

There are golden beaches too.

The first time we went I told someone and he said "Oh, Lanzagrotty!" But no, he'd never been.

We liked it, it's like the earth turned inside out and has all those fascinating sculptures and very good food and wine grown in dips in the volcanic hillsides.

Allira Sun 01-Sept-24 12:02:35

Wine from grapes grown in the dips, of course. 😃

We had a day trip to Benidorm when we were staying in another part of Spain. We loved it. Beautiful beaches, cheap bars and cafes, a great market and lots of fun.

Try telling people you are travelling independently in the Mid East as a solo female! You are warned that you wil be abducted, raped or killed by terrorists.

None of those things ever happened to me. Ive been in greater physical danger here in the UK.

Allira … ā€œthe earth turned inside outā€ … what a magical description. So true!

I think it was our then 12 year old who used that term. A good description.

I went to Butlin’s four weeks ago with DD and the GC, my friends thought I had lost my marbles

Indigo8 Sun 01-Sept-24 12:25:26

I went to Butlins in Bogner over twenty years ago. The children loved it which was the point of the exercise. As for me, I have never drunk so much gin ether before or after.
