Snootiness about holiday destinations

There's a lot of one upmanship about holidays. And many people seem to look down on package holidays, though I find them quite convenient and there is much less worry about flights being changed and hotels being overbooked or not as they are advertised.

On that point, please be aware that there are some quite high profile holiday companies which give the impression that they operate as package holiday providers, but which only act as agents for flight companies and accommodation providers. They are sometimes a bit cheaper, but if it all goes wrong re flights, accommodation and transfers, you are on your own. And they are not ABTA affiliated. We nearly got caught out like that but because we had booked flights, hotels and transfers in the same transaction, on seeking legal advice I discovered our holiday was covered by the package holiday regulations and the company had to sort the problem out. I will never use such a company again, despite their intensive advertising campaigns, because I read the heartbreaking posts where families had been left in an awful situation, either before commencing their holidays or when they arrived at their destination. Please read the small print carefully (where, tucked away in the innumerable pages of terms and conditions, you may find that the company is only an AGENT and if you have any issues, you must deal with the airline, accommodation or transfer provider yourself to get redress) or you could end up in another country with the hotel saying there is no booking for you, or find yourself in a filthy, dangerous hotel - the company/agent who sold you the holiday will wash their hands of it, however dire your circumstances may be. Beware - look at Trust Pilot.

Yes some people can choose to look down on someone elses choies from holiday destinations to choice of loo paper, but they only show themselves up and you are on the loral high ground.

Now THAT is my idea of heaven! Feel very nostalgic now, remembering the holidays we had there as a family. My girls are all grown up now and, sadly, my husband died, so no more memories with them.
I can survive with my memories!

Good few years ago when my husband was alive we went to Lanzarote as a sort of last resort out of sheer desperation. And we loved it so much we used to go often twice a year for many years afterwards. Always to Princess Yaiza in Playa Blanca. Was magical and now so many memories

I find other people's holiday stories boring on the whole. They tend to be rather superficial - which airline people used, the hotel or cabin, and a comparison of trips taken by others in the group who have been on a similar holiday.

One group I'm a member of is particularly prone to doing this. I think it's to avoid conversations getting personal or contentious. The trouble is that you don't get to know the people well because the holiday stories preclude that, so other conversations don't open up. Still, at least we don't have to look at dozens of snaps these days .

My friend & her DH went to India, said it was hell on earth, a filthy, rat ridden place, people going to the loo on the side of the road 😩 when she arrived home, she booked a week in lanzarote to get over the India trip 🤣

On my trip we had a long bus journey and stopped for a break the ladies too one look at the loo, said “oh my god, wheres the neatest bush” and so it was, same on Safari .
You have to expect this away from the tourist hotels it is a developing country, it’s a country that excites and shocks in equal measure. Its not expensive, go with a decent tour group, eat where the guide takes you, avoid hot season and monsoons.

India has a space programme! High time they had proper toilet facilities.The way the poor are treated there is abominable as is their caste system and treatment of women.

What's wrong with fish and chips? Whenever we return to England from France almost the first thing we do is go to a decent pub for fish and chips and a good pint bitter. Both thngs that I miss in France although the frozen fish and chips are usually OK.

We only discovered Lanzarote 6 yrs ago as it was always tagged by us Brits as “Lanzarote Lanzagrotty”. It’s anything but and we love it. We’ve been twice this year and are heading off there again at the end of the month and are planning spending Christmas there. No high rise hotels, all built on the coast and lovely people. We tend to like quieter resorts so Lanzarote suits us fine.

My sil use to call Spain a third world country, anytime I booked Benidorm 🤣 I love it out of season, jeans on & jacket & long walk to clear the cobwebs- heaven!

It was Blackpool and Rhyl in either a boarding house or a holiday camp. Loved them both, and took my own kids to both. The GC have also been to Blackpool. With young children we bought a touring caravan and did both UK and much of Europe, mainly cities and countryside. Still got a touring caravan but only UK now. Also been to Disney Florida and the following year had a fantastic week at California - the one just up the road from Great Yarmouth! BUT we got the cruising bug in our late 60s and have done several cruises including two Worlds - and planning another in 2026. So a right mixture and all v. enjoyable to us. I don't gave a monkey's what other folk think, I've enjoyed my lot.

I went to Southend College of Technology to study how to work in the City of London. Got married at Southend registry office to my first husband, next to the college. Learnt to drive there at 17. Didn’t live there but In Hadleigh up the road. A place for snobs.
Lived in Spain for many years just outside the lovely Benidorm in a Spanish village. Benidorm beach is immaculate. Stayed in Hotel Cimbel this year and it is on the beach front catering for mainly Spanish guests. Speaking the language goes down well. Altea would suit travel snobs, 10 minutes drive away. Millionaire house prices with 5 star hotels to match, full of art galleries. I learned to draw and paint in the Casa de Cultura with a patient old man who was such a good teacher. He didn’t speak English but we managed with my Spanish.
Have been to Tenerife and had the best Christmas ever before our son was born, Gran Canaria when he was grown up and Fuerteventura which I didn’t like because of the cool wind. It was 38c most days but felt too cold for me with the wind. Didn’t make it to Lanzarote but hope to.
At 15 I went with a school friend to Butlins in Clacton. It was basic but had fun. Having a positive attitude helps I guess.

I heard the news on World Service that there had been an accident . I woke my eldest daughter who thought I had been dreaming. She flipped through tv channels and found a report of the accident and several hours later learned of the death of Princess Diana. We are not royalists but we lovedher and were heartbroken. I still have her portrait hung in my house. She was a lovely person and is still missed, I’m sure.

I live in a seaside town that has more than its share of snobbery: Southend on sea 😂
When people voice a sniffy remark I point out how many grammar schools we have: 4.

I went on a course in Southend and stayed for a few days. I really enjoyed it there and the pier was lovely. When I told people that I had to go there for work, most of them were scathing about the town, but not many had actually been there. I took some great photos and took delight in showing them to the people who mocked. Most had the grace to apologise.
Some people just have to put you down!

Fashion Labels, Aldi V M&S , Cars, what you watch on TV - everything's fair game to a Snob.

It's ALWAYS been the case.
Blackpool was the epitome of the "Wakes Weeks" - back then & up until around 50 years ago, when all the Cotton Manufacturers, in all the Lancashire Mill Towns, took it in turns to close for a fortnight. Meanwhile the owners themselves went to stay a little- but crucially separate distance further down the Road at Lytham Saint Annes. Much more classy. Meanwhile, the Woollen Mill workers & the Management went by train directly to Morecambe - the workers went to the 'Bed & Breakfast' establishments, whilst the ''people of Class and Culture" took a taxi-ride of 400 yards over to the 1920's built Midland Hotel- an exclusive northern Palace of Art Deco- and only left to visit the Theatres and Shows. Then another 400 yard taxi-ride rake to the Railway Station, and thence to Bradford & Leeds.

Oh dear isn’t it sad that some people feel the need to put people down in such a way. I would respond by laughing, we holiday wherever we wish and enjoy eating whatever we enjoy!
