November holiday but not long haul - recommendations please

We are looking for a non-long haul holiday in November and would appreciate some Gransnet opinions please.

We would just like a pleasant daytime temperature. We aren't interested in swimming buy enjoy scenic views and quaint villages/towns. We generally book package holidays but I am wondering, given that we don't use facilities like swimming pools, spas, etc., whether booking an apartment might be a better way to go. Also, good public transport would be useful as we don't really want to hire a car.

I have stayed in Lanzarote in December and the weather was very pleasant. We found the island a bit boring but things were a little more challenging then as we took my elderly mum. Perhaps we misjudged.

I have been to Puerta de la Cruz. Tenerife, in the summer and liked it very much. Has anyone holidayed there in November?

Would anyone recommend the South of France, Malta, Sicily or Sardinia in November?

(We weren't that keen on Madeira and definitely did not like Gran Canaria).

I've been to Puerto de la Cruz in January and it was warm.

My daughter and I went to Malta last November weather was warm we travelled on local buses to see Valetta which was beautiful and very interesting. Beaches weren’t too busy.

I’d suggest Mdeira or Malaga City. Both have good November climates with plenty to do, or not as you wish.

Oh sorry just saw that you weren’t keen on Madeira.

My choice, for South of France - we have been in November - would be Nice. It won't be hot, hot, but pleasant enough to get out and about. An easy flight from City or Stansted, Nice Airport is almost in the town, just a cheap bus ride into the centre. Great Art museums, Chagall, Matisse, shops, restaurants. Trips by train to Monaco or Cannes in the other direction. No car necessary. Markets to buy your favourite French foods, and cafés everywhere. Apartments are mainly back a few streets from the Promenade so you wouldn't get a view. Antibes would be better for views, but not so much to do. Not too many English people in Nice either, you get the feel it's a working town.

Not for everyone, but we love it.

Malta is a good one, though I went to Gozo which is a pretty unique place.

You have to remember that although they are warm, places more north will still get dark earlier.

Cyprus is still very warm in November, evenings too., so eating out is very pleasant. Sea still warm enough to enjoy a swim. Lots of interesting historical places to visit. If you rent a car , they drive the same side of the road as us. We visit in October and November and never been disappointed.
Summer would be far too hot. 4.5 hour flight.

Just spotted you don’t want to hire a car or swim…

Try the South of Tenerife this time, if you say you were in the North last time.

We have had lovely winter holidays there.

I didn’t think Malta was that warm in winter.

I’m currently in Malta and the temperature is a very comfortable 26 degrees, with a pleasant breeze. There are lots of Gransnet threads on Malta. It has so much to offer and well worth a visit. Getting around is very easy, with buses and ferries, as well as good taxi services. I class it more as a city break, as we no longer do beach holidays. It is also very friendly with plenty of restaurants. We prefer an apartment, rather than an hotel, although this time we’re staying in an Airbnb in Central Valletta. Thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

All I can say is, wish I was there sunshine

They say Seville is very interesting and should be nice and warm.

silverlining48. We love Cyprus too, and had some great holidays there later in the season.

If you fancy South Tenerife try the Parque del Sol apartments in Adeje. We think the best apartments in the area. Great location for walks in all directions, near buses, shops & restaurants. More likely to get blue sky than in the North of the island !

Southern Spain has lots to offer apart from the typical beach holidays. We were in Malaga recently - rented AirBnB near Old Town for 5 days. Lots to see and do. Great public transport - from there you can get to places like Granada, Ronda, Cordoba, Seville. Or as someone else suggested, use Seville as a base.

I would pick Malta, Gozo, so very interesting, no language problems, lovely friendly people and good food. Biased as lived on Gozo for a while. Good transport around Island, good ferry service.

Seville is great. We've been a few times.

If you can stand a four-hour flight, then Antalya in Turkey is my favourite. But you must stay in the old town, Kale Ici, not the inclusive hotels near the beaches. Great restaurants, lovely to wander around. Trips out to historic sites are available by coach.

We have just returned from Rethymno in Crete. Weather still high20s. Lovely old town and harbour to stroll around.

My sister has an apartment in Los Gigantes, West Tenerife. She always goes out there during November, back for Christmas and out again in January. The weather is very pleasant.

JackyB Wed 16-Oct-24 12:31:57

My sister just got back from Tenerife and said that they were expecting the season to start soon.

Of the places that I have been which have been mentioned so far, I would second Malta and Andalusia.

Definitely NOT the Southern tip of Italy. We were there once September/October and it was filthy and unwelcoming. We love Italy usua!ly and the area has lots to offer, but it was spoilt by the filth and everywhere being shut. My hairdresser goes there in the summer months and says it's lovely and clean in the season.

Just come back from Nice lovely temperatures very easy to use trams buses to beautiful villages along the coast line. I’d definitely recommend. 2hr flight. 30 mins from airport.

Another vote for Malta. Weather in November is pleasant for walking around and sightseeing. English is spoken throughout. Culture, history, architecture and blue skies. Easy and cheap to travel on buses, especially if you get the weekly unlimited travel card for 25 euros. It also has the benefit of being so small that you can visit many different towns and villages all over. If you go, try to visit Gozo which is a gem, still quaint although fast being ruined by development.
