Why do I feel so sorry for Rob, he seems to always run out of time and his pastry was a total disaster this week, but those wonderful eyes....

glassortwo Tue 23-Aug-11 23:22:31

They were gorgeous, pity about his pastry grin

shysal Wed 24-Aug-11 08:26:27

And the dimples !

jogginggirl Wed 24-Aug-11 08:35:46

I haven't seen Rob but I think he is the guy referred to on the Chris Evans breakfast show last week. Sounds like that even if his baking skills fail him - his good looks will see him through wink
Perhaps I'll google him........

yogagran Wed 24-Aug-11 15:04:47

Paul Hollywood is rather nice too!

Just what do I watch this series for - I thought I was interested in the baking but now I'm not so sure confused

The tarts looked lovely yesterday, apart from the green pesto one which looked odd and very un-appetising. I wouldn't have the patience to do the little tiny ones that looked so decorative.

DaisyD Wed 24-Aug-11 15:17:59

I am enjoying this programme! I was surprised to see them making pastry in a food mixer .. is it any good doing it like that? I always use my hands and rub it in - my crotchety old domestic science teacher said that you get more air into the pastry that way.

The tarts were all lovely and I learned a lot about blind baking. I never knew you have to put the pastry back in for a wee while to cook more, once you have taken out the beans.

As for the eye candy, well, keep it coming! Paul Hollywood is my favourite smile

I was sorry to see Simon lose his place when Rob made such a pigs ear of things and didn't do a lot better last week, dropping his cake on the floor. He doesn't seem to work well under pressure does he? But then neither do I these days! I love the programme though....
DaisyD, I have used a food processor to make pastry - it was lovely; but said processor is now in the loft as it took up too much room on the worktop and I now use my hands. Are all domestic science teachers crochety? I had one too!

gangy5 Wed 24-Aug-11 17:51:11

Quite frankly Rob should have been the one to go seeing as he's ballsed up 2 weeks running. To add to that he's thoroughly disorganised and has to rush to finish.

yogagran Wed 24-Aug-11 18:46:27

I think that they're keeping Rob because he's lovely smile but you're right, he should have gone.
I've made pastry in a food processor, it's fine if you're in a hurry as it's done in a flash. As long as you don't over mix it I think it's fine.
I bake a larger size pastry case blind but never the small "jam tart" size

artygran Wed 24-Aug-11 18:55:05

Am I the only one who doesn't find Rob "lovely"? I want to yank him out of the tv and tidy him up! A shave would be a good start...

artygran Wed 24-Aug-11 19:06:05

Sorry Rob... I've got my grumpy old git head on this evening. I'll try and be nice as long as you don't drop any more cakes on the floor!

Hattie64 Wed 24-Aug-11 20:03:28

Yes he is a pretty boy, but a bit dopey me thinks. Why would you get shortlisted to go on a baking programme, and make such a mess of your little tartlets. This writes as though I am about to make a joke!!! There must have been about a thousand or so other contestants better than him. I found myself very annoyed by him at the end. Couldn't believe he got through.

shysal Thu 25-Aug-11 09:03:35

My hand-made pastry is dreadful as I have hot hands, so a processor was the answer for me.
I make great bread tho',warm hands an advantage there.smile

DaisyD Thu 25-Aug-11 11:41:40

Artygran : Yes, I think my domestic science teacher had only to look at me to be irritated. She took every opportunity to humiliate the ones she disliked and unfortunately I was one of them. Still I am pushing 61 now and she must have gone to the happy baking ground in the sky or else to the other place!

As for Rob, I do think it was unfair that he is still in when he messed up so completely. He may have lovely brown eyes, but Simon should still be there!

artygran Thu 25-Aug-11 17:54:38

I don't think my DS teacher will be making angel cakes - more like devil's food cake! I once cut my hand quite badly in a lesson (because I was totally ham- fisted - Rob, are you listening?) and she gave me tea for the shock. I told her I couldn't drink tea with milk in but the snappy old so and so made me drink it anyway and then got very irate because I threw it up all over the floor! Her favourite phrase was "clear as you go, girls, clear as you go!" If she saw my kitchen today, after the Great Arty Bake Off, she would faint clean away!

Mary Berry has been my big hero for a long time; I have had two of her books for years and still use them regularly. I also have Marguerite Patten's Cookery in Colour - bought it the first year we were married (45 years ago!). I learned an awful lot from it.

yogagran Thu 25-Aug-11 21:36:59

I've got a copy of Mrs. Beeton which was given to me as a wedding present 45 years ago. You can tell the most used recipes by the butter stained corners, flour along the inside spine and notes in the margins

HildaW Fri 26-Aug-11 21:29:58

I do find myself asking if the folks on this prog really were the best bakers they could find or just a random lot they found lurking in the BBC car park. Some really dont seem to have the basics sorted.

nanimoo Tue 30-Aug-11 14:14:05

I watch it with my daughter as we both love it we also watched the last series. Have to agree that Rob is disorganised but he is so cute.

yogagran Tue 30-Aug-11 18:51:18

It's on this evening and apparently there are to be two people leaving... I wonder who it will be?

Hattie64 Tue 30-Aug-11 19:42:33

Its flavoured bread tonight, I will intrigued to see how it all turns out, I can just see Rob now, flinging the dough around the room.

shysal Wed 31-Aug-11 08:25:47

Rob is still hanging in there by the skin of his teeth, only because some others were even worse!
I love bread making so enjoyed this week's show .I am glad there is no one stand-out potential winner at the moment, look forward to the rest of the series.
Wish there was a cup-cake smiley!

artygran Wed 31-Aug-11 15:13:45

I enjoyed yesterday's programme - I felt really sorry for the lady who made the bread basket with wholemeal flour - even a twit like me could have told her that wouldn't work! I was full of admiration for their efforts though (yes, even Rob!) cos I can't make bread, and that Paul Whotsisname is totally up himself and horrible!

HildaW Wed 31-Aug-11 18:07:02

Hollywood..................its probably his real name but does make him sound a bit of a prima donna....or whatever the male version of that is.

GoldenGran Wed 31-Aug-11 18:18:46

I watched this last night and loved it. artygran I love to cook and bake but have never had any success with bread so was impressed with their efforts too. Paul thing is truly horrible, why they always have to add that nasty element to these kind of programmes ?

HildaW Fri 02-Sept-11 09:38:44

Funnily enough I watched this last year and my impression of Paul was not unfavourable, I think perhaps hes been told to spice it up a bit because Mary and the girls are so lovely. I've watched him on his own somewhere and athough he does come over as a bit of a 'smoothie' he did not seem that much of a villain. Mind you........its amazing what a difference editing can do!
