DS bought me the boxed set of The Forsyte Saga (the 1967 one with Kenneth Moore etc) for my birthday. Goodness, how good it was - I am really enjoying seeing it again. I remember watching the last episodes in my first term at university, when we all crowded into the common room in the hall of residence. I am sure lots of you remember watching it too....

Loved it!! Do you also remember The Pallisers which came after it?

Me too Mamie!! The Forsyte Saga and Top of the Pops would get us all crowded into the TV room in my hall of residence ("Chattan " in St A's, as Annobel and Em know!) and I can honestly say that I did not watch TV at all apart from these 2 progs - having too much fun!

Felt an affinity with The Pallisers as Palliser is a family name - DH's family lived in Ireland for about 400 years before being "boycotted" out and I am sure Trollope got the name from his time there.

I missed the Forsyte Saga because I was living abroad at the time but remember The Pallisers with pleasure. Another wonderful serial was War and Peace (1972 -73) which was the first time I'd seen Anthony Hopkins (Pierre Bezukhov) - it was clear then that he was destined for stardom. I was afraid that I would go into labour just before the last episode and I'd miss it. But DS2 was a considerate infant and turned up on his expected date, two days after the serial ended.

I believe churches noticed a significant drop in attendances on Sunday evenings when The Forsyte Saga was screened. I loved it!

It says that apparently some churches even changed the times of their services! I think one of the old brothers in the FS went on to be in The Pallisers, but I haven't managed to check him on IMDB yet. Yes I loved War and Peace too - was it Morag Hood as Natascha?

Does anyone remember Love for Lydia? Pre video recorders, we left a works meal to go home to watch the last episode.

We were stationed in Singapore and used to get The Forsyte Saga on TV there (with Chinese subtitles). Absolutely everyone was hooked on it. You only accepted invitations to each other's houses on Sunday evenings on the proviso that the Forsytes would be there! (Friday nights were Star Trek nights - everyone was hooked on that too! Sad lot, we were!) I never liked Susan Hampshire as Fleur, though.

I was reminded of the Forsyte Saga the other day, playing an Eric Coates CD while doing my ironing - the opening of his Three Elizabeths Suite was the theme music to the series.

I remember The Forsythe Saga. It was my mother's favourite novel(altogether 5 books)and I have read it twice myself. I saw the dubbed edition on German TV and my little two year old daughter called it that 'Lady crying' film. It was excellent but I am wondering whether I wouldn't find it old fashioned now.

I absolutely love The Forsyte Saga - my favourite book too. But I hated the remake with a passion - who on earth thought that Gina Thingy could possibly be Irene? & Soames with red hair!!! Nooooooooooo .....
