Monuments Men

Nina, I liked it. Found it a bit disjointed, but enjoyable nevertheless.

Saw it yesterday, and agree it's a bit clunky but enjoyable - and seeing George is always a pleasure. It was good Sunday afternoon watching for me, especially as I enjoyed a large tub of ice cream whilst sitting there.

Saw The Invisible Woman tonight; was a bit dreary. The trailer for The Monuments Men looked much better [as did the trailer for The Book Thief].

yes, I loved reading the Book Thief, and am looking forward to the film.

Some of my daughters pupils gave her The Book Thief when they left school; I borrowed it with the intention of reading it but haven't got round to it yet [I did pick it up in her house and, having read the first page wanted to read the rest]. D'you think I should try to read it before I see the film or would it ruin the film for me? I might read some of it just to 'get a feel' for it. Reckon it's one of those films that's going to make me cry a lot [the trailer made me cry!].

Tegan, I loved the book, though I accept it isn't for everyone. I hope the film is good in its own right, as it's always a challenge to see a film of a book you have loved.

Very rarely works, does it [thinks Captain Corellis Mandolin and weeps ....although I thought The Time Travellers wife was good [I would never have known how to turn that into a film ].

I enjoyed The Monuments Men, though agree that it's not a mega-film or one which will become a classic

However, I knew nothing about the true story behind the film and, had I not seen it (or read the book on which it is based), would not have set myself wondering about whether art and artefacts are worth risking human lives.

Also agree about George Clooney (+ tache) and Matt Damon, who looked rather different from the last time I saw him which was Behind the Candelabra

The trails for The Book Thief look as though it will be a tearjerker, so it will depend on mood whether I watch that one

Have you seen trails for Grand Hotel Budapest? Ralph Fiennes hamming it up for all he's worth - it looks a scream!

Can only be better than The Invisible Woman; I think he's a better actor than director.

I wanted to see it last weekend but was taken to see The Wolf of Wall Street instead (actually, once I had got past the sex, drugs and swearing, I quite enjoyed it). Hopefully see The Book Thief next week and itching to see Budapest when it appears in March - it looks really funny.

I haven't been tempted to see The Wolf of Wall Street [think it's a film to be watched on dvd later on] but feel I need to see Gravity after it won so many Bafta's [although a friend of mine said it was beyond boring]. Alas it needs to be seen 'big' I guess [and probably in 3D, but our cinema doesn't do that].

I know Wolf of Wall Street is supposed to be very good and Leonardo deemed be sublime in it, but I don't fancy the rampant sexism and greed. We are hoping to see The Dallas Buyers Club next week and my son tells me that Her is very good. I would have liked to have seen Gravity in 3D, but my husband gets sick with that sort of thing, he had to walk out of a Harry Potter that we took the kids to years ago where there was a scene with a flying Ford Anglia circling around. The motion proved too much for him!!!

...good job he didn't make it to the Quidditch scene then....

Shame he can't stomach 3D although I have watched films where I don't think it added much. The best film I've seen in 3D is Avatar, superb !

I loved Avatar [although didn't see it in 3D]. Was very sniffy about it when it came out [my ex was raving about it] but then it won lots of Bafta's so I went to see it and enjoyed every minute of it. Wish I'd seen Life of Pi in 3D.

Frankly, after the reviews, I probably wouldn't have bothered with Monuments Men except for George Clooney. He's never hard to watch, is he?

I think the film's problem is that he tried to make an action film out of material that just didn't lend itself to drama, suspense and car chases. It's an interesting story - and one Clooney was right to bring to public attention - but it would have made a better documentary than an action film. . which it wasn't.

No, not an action film, but an easy and interesting watch. Plus, of course, George is always easy on the eye isn't he
