Nearly all the penguin products,and there are lots and lots,are currently out of stock at JL.Now that really is the power of advertising.

I am uncomfortable with the Sainsburys ad too - it is an over-sanitised version of a well know WW I incident but all the time you know it is pushing up the millions of profits for Sainsburys. I am delighted that they are giving generously to the British Legion, but there are some areas I personally would prefer to see kept out of commercial advertising.
And bottom line - would it make me go to Sainsburys? Actually no, not on account of their advertising, only if I wanted to anyway.
Now I might go looking to ppppick up a penguin at John Lewis....!

The Sainsbury's advert is, in my view, emotionally manipulative and unprincipled - but then that's what all adverts are, aren't they? But I find it especially ghastly that they are piggy backing on the tragedy of war and the plight of soldiers.

The fact that the RBL approved this advert does not reassure me. The RBL also approved BAE's and Lockheed Martin's sponsorship of various Poppy Day events - something which I think takes irony to a new level.

I try to avoid watching ads by pausing and fast forwarding. I suppose this is why businesses have to make them a talking point so that we make an effort to watch them.

So far as food is concerned, I'm with roses are red and anasixty, you get what you pay for.

I saw the Sainsbury's ad again last night, I still found it very moving and the fact it's approved by the RBL and that profits from the chocolate bars go to that charity makes it ok for me.

The British Legion don't always get things right
Greenfinch like all big charities their marketing is done by a huge marketing team these days and, to continue to keep the public's interest when there are so many charities claiming our money, I suppose they have to keep thinking of new ideas.
Many of them are run like big businesses.

No Ann you are not being too picky! You get what you pay for. At the height of the horsemeat fiasco, Iceland had their products checked. The chicken pie didn't contain horsemeat or ANY meat of any description. The experts said they didn't know what it was, just unidentified vegetable matter! Don't go there.

When I see their ads when everything seems to be far too cheap to be true I have to wonder at the quality (or lack of it) or am I being too picky?

I remember taking Mum to Iceland a few years ago because she wanted to try their fish pie. I remarked that everything seemed to be priced at £1.

'Yes dear,' she said - VERY LOUDLY. 'That's because the people who shop in here need to add up on their fingers'

Dunno. But the ad makes it look good! I might pay a visit.
