Wicked is an experience from the minute you step in the theatre door. It's an elegant theatre, and the green lighting throughout really sets the scene for what's to come.
We had fantastic seats (organised for us so that we could review the show), just 4 seats from the front, but I've seen the show once before from lesser seats and the acoustics and visuals were just as impressive from there.
For those who don't know, Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel - a retelling of the Wizard of Oz, but from the (sympathetic) viewpoint of the 'Wicked' witch of the West. There are two sides to every story, and the good witch, the wizard and even Dorothy have another side to them... Personally, I find musicals sometimes rely too heavily on the singing and dancing but in this case the storyline was just as enchanting. The two main characters (Glinda the Good witch and Elphaba the wicked witch of the west) are unbelievably talented - their singing is (pardon the pun) spellbinding. And the acting is superb - in such an otherwordly setting but with such a fast-moving storyline, their portrayal needed to be spot-on. And it was that and more. The performance flew by and every cast member deserved the standing ovation they received. I would highly recommend this show to anyone (although probably not suitable for very young children). We thoroughly enjoyed it.
