jura; it isn't just sex and violence. To me, the main theme is political/personal and it's about how sometimes doing the right thing doesn't work out and the wrong thing has to be done, and how loyalties can change due to circumstances...the most difficult loyalty being that of family. Throughout it all there is a man called Varys who is the voice of reason. I've never loved fictional characters in the way I love this lot and each series make me think about so many issues which we then, as a family, discuss at length.

never watched a single episode - don't intend to.

I have a very soft spot for Tyrion - he is my favourite character, right through all the books.

Tegan2 Sat 23-Dec-17 17:30:59

The only thing that makes me hide behind the sofa is worrying about much loved characters being bumped off. The dialogue between certain characters is wonderful eg Tyrion/ Bron..Brianne and her page etc etc etc....then there are homages to other people such as Ray Harryhausen [sp]. Add to this the locations and costumes....

Greyduster Sat 23-Dec-17 15:12:43

Perhaps it is time I “manned up” and stopped hiding behind the sofa, then!

I've had the first series box set for ages and actually watched the first episode yesterday. Wow, very graphic, brutal, lots of sex, but I was totally hooked. Someone has given me series two so I can see box set binging happening !!

Best thing I've ever seen in my life; don't know what I'll do after the final series [terrified that something might happen to stop me watching it]. At least I've got the series 7 box set to watch; have seen the episodes but I also watch the commentaries on each episode in the box sets and am fascinated the way they discuss the locations, designs, lighting etc.

I have never seen this, but on recommendation have asked for it for Christmas. DH said "What really!!" So here's hoping ??

Keep watching - you'll learn to love 'Kaleesi's' Moon & Stars smile

Watched episode 2 and need more persuading to continue. I will watch another Two and give it a go a bit longer. Pretty sickened watching the face of the pretty blonde girl having anal sex with her new husband. Yuk !

Started to watch Jamestown recommended in the paper and there was a rape scene pretty early on. I worry about young men watching these mainstream programmes in case it gives them ideas of how women should be treated.

Seen episode 1 and was prepared for brutality and sex, I am not 100% convinced. I will stay with it as I want to be 'drawn in' as WMKF suggested.

Willow500 Fri 01-Dec-17 21:56:37

Love it - read the books first as someone I know worked on the first two series and didn't want to watch it until I knew what it was about then became hooked.

Greyduster Fri 01-Dec-17 21:23:04

I have read all the books but have resisted watching the TV series because it's so graphic. I'm a complete wuss!

NanKate Fri 01-Dec-17 20:34:48

Just got Game of Thrones on Nowtv. I am ready to start watching from series 1.

I’ve read all your Reviews and you seem to love it or hate it like Marmite. I shall watch two episodes and report back.

I can remember my DS saying to me ‘I don’t think this series is appropriate for you Mum’ ?

ww Now you understand why we all love it, yes there is lots of violence and a fair bit of sex going on, and sometimes uncomfortable viewing, but taken as a whole it's a marvellous peek into another world, and there is also bravery and goodness of character to balance things out.Not to mention some really great scenery, dialogue and acting.Looking forward to series six!

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 25-Jan-16 13:25:13

whitewave it draws you in doesn't it? It's one of those series where you have to pay attention! grin The new series starts in the US on 24th April, not sure about the UK yet.

There's a lot of sex in the books, but there's not a lot of description, so it's a bit of a shocker for some people to see the sex played out on screen! grin

whitewave Mon 25-Jan-16 13:15:51

Well talk about a complete volte-face!!! confusedblush

Completed all 40 episodes and loved it. Can't wait for series 5. Coming out in March I think.

Some of us have been mentioning GOT on another thread and I thought I would resurrect this one instead of hijacking the other. I am a big fan of the books and the show and thought others might like to know the first trailers for the new series are out.

GOT S6
House Targaryen
House Lannister
House Stark

I don't want to sound prudish -it isn't the nudity that bothers me but it is gratuitous, and the sex scenes also.

The violence is also graphic. Oh dear confused

Perhaps I should have researched it more? Mind you I will stick with for a while longergrin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 05-Dec-15 20:21:52

I agree with the OP. The books are nowhere as sex ridden as the TVs series. Well, not in such an obvious way anyway. I read that the cast are starting to object to it.

GrandmaKT Sat 05-Dec-15 20:18:07

How strange - I was the opposite. I didn't think I'd like it as I'm not really into fantasy. However, I found the characters very well drawn and especially like the fact that there are strong female and child characters with really good story lines. Yes there is nudity (female and male) and violence (both to and by women), but I think 'porn' is putting it a bit strongly!
Both DH and I love it and can't wait for the next series.

whitewave Sat 05-Dec-15 19:09:34

Just bought the box set as I felt sure I would enjoy it as it had such excellent reviews.

I read nothing that suggested it was porn under another title.

Why oh why have they fallen back on that old chestnut of seeing women as objects and the undercurrent of violence towards the women. It adds nothing to the development of the story. Lazy production and unpleasant to watch. £40 it cost!!!!!!
