I really think this is so good a series that it deserves a thread of its own despite being mentioned in passing in another thread.

Everything about it is excellent from the costumes, the scenery and dialogue. Above all though is the perfectly cast characters - all of whom seem to look exactly as they should! I think Inspector Bucket is my special favourite but all of them have the faces and bearing and delivery of the lines exactly as they should have.

The clever knitting together of so many Dickens' characters is brilliant and I shall be so sorry when it ends. I think the great man himself would be very pleased if only he could see it.

Love it! Miss Havisham gets a backstory, and a first name. Makes me want to read more Dickens. Hope we see more of Dodger.

I haven't got a clue who the murderer is? Is Fagin too obvious?

Who do you think it is?

Cracking episode tonight. It's really building up an atmosphere!

Well hasn't it got to be someone who is not major player in any of his books? As otherwise how can they exist in the book - having been hung for murder

Just catching up with Dickensian on iplayer and enjoying it so much want to ration the episodes - so tempted to watch it all in one big sitting, but have number nine to look forward to next.

Like others, I think the casting is superb and I love the interplay of characters from different stories. I am fascinated by the development of Sykes character.

Good to know the nation is gripped! Better than the 'Who shot JR?' saga to my mind.

Does anyone else think Nancy might be guilty ...?

We are all assuming that this is set before the books and I can see that it is in the case of Scrooge ( I am glad we know how it turns out for Tiny Tim) and Miss Havisham, but could the other books have already happened?
If Mrs Bumble gets her maid then we know Oliver was in the past.

Gagagran Sat 23-Jan-16 08:05:49

It's just an excellent quality production and I love it. I think Bill Sykes killed Jacob Marley on Fagin's orders. Fagin burnt the cosh used in the attack on his fire after Inspector Bucket visited, to question him.

The only slight criticism I have is that Arthur Havisham is getting on my nerves - there's a bit too much focus on him and the dastardly Compeyson.
I love the Bumbles but my favourites are Silas Wegg and Mrs Gamp - Pauline Collins deserves an award for her portrayal.

Imperfect27 Sat 23-Jan-16 08:11:04

Oliver cannot have been in the past as, if the story developments lesad to the same final outcomes, Nancy is murdered by Sykes ...

That would save a hanging if she is the murderer of Marley ...

Already very sorry for Miss Havisham and seeing a firm link with her wedding day disappointment!

Imperfect27 Sat 23-Jan-16 08:12:33

P.S. Remember -I am only on episode 8, no spoilers please if /I have missed something vital! grin

This is really good television isn't it? Last night I was completely lost in the story, the atmosphere is almost compelling. I know there are several more episodes, but I shall hate it when it is finished I know.

I'm just wondering if Abel Magwitch will make an appearance. I have only watched up to episode 8 on catch up. I will try to see the latest episodes over the weekend. He was Compeyson's accomplice and escaped the prison ship at the same time as Pip met Magwitch in the churchyard. Compeyson's is a thoroughly bad lot!

I really love it, it's brilliant.?

love it too.Pauline Collins is a first class actress. Her character makes me laugh.Felt sorry for Honoria.

Love it. It's extremely well done. I agree about Pauline Collins, and love the scenes with her and Silas Wegg, and also the Bumbles are great with Caroline Quentin. Just wish the Beeb had given it a regular slot instead of it being all over the place. I am constantly having to check to make sure I don't miss it.

I agree Printmiss. I shall look for the DVD once it's finished and rewatch it.

Sparklefizz Sat 23-Jan-16 09:43:04

WTF??? Something went very wrong there. I promise absolutely that I did not post a million times!!!

Pittcity Sat 23-Jan-16 09:53:10

Forgot about that imperfect.
I never got to the end of Our Mutual Friend so will need to Google what happened to Wegg and Venus.
Who is Miss Biggetywitch? Is she made up for this series?
It is all so intriguing.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 23-Jan-16 10:13:49

I'm not sure time scales matter. As the story is made up, doesn't that mean anything could happen and characters might not have the same ending as in the books?

I think Nancy is a good call Imperfect27. I did wonder if maybe it's Jagger.

At the moment Miss Haversham has no hero to save her, but I'm hoping one will arrive.

Pauline Collins is superb and definitely should get nominated for a BAFTA or something. I don't know the name of the actress playing Miss Biggetywitch but she was in Coronation Street a long time ago. Don't think she's made up, but her hair and costume are great.

We're halfway through the series now, so plenty of time to go! grin

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 23-Jan-16 10:20:13

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant about being made up. blush Yes, I think she is a made up character.

POGS Sat 23-Jan-16 10:34:54

It is a well thought out story and manages to mingle the characters we know so well , must have spent some time deciding which characters to choose. Poor old Miss Havershams pet dog!

I think it is still looking like Bill Sykes but it does seem so obvious a choice confused. Do you think the success of this series will see another involving other characters from his books?

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 23-Jan-16 10:38:49

I'd love to see a second series - with a different story though, no cliff hanger please! The only thing is that it cost a lot to make this series, so maybe the BBC won't be able to do another.

Imperfect27 Sat 23-Jan-16 11:48:41

Or ...having invested so much in the set, maybe the Beeb will get their money's worth and churn out another 10 series ...as long as the quality is this good I won't mind! grin
