Are you being served.

I enjoyed them both in a mild way but I had trouble hearing what some of the characters in Porridge were saying and I'm not deaf. Did anyone else have the same problem?

Porridge in its new incarnation would stand up well. Its 10000 times better than that god-awful Mrs Browns Boys. Of course Porridge is written by its original writers.
There was a good sitcom about a young offenders institutions last year -Crims. It was very good too and quite different from Porridge.

I gave AYBS almost three whole minutes by which time the rate of double entendres was climbing rapidly. Didn't bother with Porridge.

Yes cherrytree59 Butterflies and Bread were so good, I remember them well.

Can't we have something new? Why not enjoy the originals ( on TV enough). I think it's a bit odd dragging it all up again with younger actors pretending to be the.originals . Fun for them perhaps. Please leave Alf Garnett in peace, can't bear that a second time. The climate isn't right for him

The other way round for me. I laughed at Mrs Slocombe's pussy but didn't like the actor playing Fletcher. I thought he over acted.

I fell asleep during AYBS but the bit I saw was dire. I woke up in time to watch porridge and really enjoyed it....and stayed awake too.

Just watched Porridge and really enjoyed it. Good cast and faithful to the old atmosphere although up to date. Written by the same writers and it showed. This one worked. Can't bring myself to watch Are You Being Served but then I didn't like the original.

Yes, I was wondering what audience this series of remakes is aimed at. People of our age can obviously remember the originals and make comparisons, but younger viewers won't even know what an old-fashioned department store looked like!

They might not even understand the 'pussy' joke

Apparently the BBC is going to see how the programmes are received and consider making a series of any which are hits.

Heaven help us if no one is coming up with any new ideas for comedies these days...

I often watch old Porridge episodes and think its still great
Agree re the late Great Ronnie Barker.
However having watched other old
Sitcoms, they don't seem to have stood the test of time (Imho) and as has already been pointed the PC standards are different in the present day. (Think Love thy neighbour and Rising damp)
But back in the sit-com hey day

Men behaving badly and several others that I can't recall the titles of

Not sure who the new episodes of AYBS or porridge are aimed at
As we can remember and watch the old episodes.
And I think the younger audience may have been just a little bemused.

I thought the acting was a bit OTT on are you being served, but enjoyed putting names to the actors. Sherrie hewson was very good, also the one who played mr. Rumbold. John Inman was a natural, I can't remember the name of the actor who played his part, but not as good although I've seen him in other things and he's a great actor. But he was camping it up.
As for Porridge it wAsnt bad, the actor who played his grandson was very believable, but you can't better the great Ronnie Barker.

Alf Garnett is yet to come. I don't know how they will deal with his prejudices in this PC climate.

I also watched them both. "Are you being Served" was terrible. I enjoyed "Porridge", it always was the better of the two. I'll watch the next offerings though, I haven't been put off.

Just watched AYBS with trepidation and had quite a few laughs. Clearly I like old fashioned camp humour. I thought Mrs Solcombe, Miss Abrahams and Mr Humphreys were excellent, not so sure about the others.

I will keep Porridge for later.

I could 't stand the puerile schoolboy humour of the original Are you being served, I thought we'd moved on from that sort of humour. so didn't watch it, but will look out for a repeat of Porridge.

I loved Porridge. Thought it was great. Good cast and good storyline.

I'd prefer more episodes of the original Hi De Hi, I really enjoyed the first episode last week, great vintage entertainment!

Are You Being Served? was a poor parody of the original with far too much reliance on Mrs Slocum's pussy for laughs. Mr Conway could perhaps have a spin off.

Truly dreadful . Porridge was marginally better but would not want to watch any more.
Think Patricia Routledge hit the nail on the head when told about the revival of Keeping up appearances, she said ' The BBC must be desperate '

Only survived 10 minutes of Are you being Served and turned off, couldn't face Porridge either. Enjoyed the originals but would rather remember those.

I'd certainly tune in to watch it again. Great script and the young actor who played Fletcher's grandson nailed it IMO.
