Now being reported on the BBC website so that's no more Bake Off for me then sad

Peardrop Tue 13-Sept-16 09:48:03

Well said, couldn't agree with you more.

gma Tue 13-Sept-16 09:46:36

I agree with 90% of gransnetters! GBBO has run its course. The present series does not hold my attention, bakers very mediocre and M and K "banter" is soooo predictable. GLad you have let it go BBC, let's have something new! Whizz kids at BBC are paid mega bucks for good ideas, well let's be having some. Not a variation on a theme, Great British Hip Replacement, Great British Ironing or maybe Great British shopping marathon! Mary looks as if she could do with a rest, ..................

Does the country really need any encouragement to stuff down more cake?
The more important point, for this who care, is that the BBC has been forced by the government to take a big financial hit recently. It now has to fund free TV licences for over 75s. This will probably have an impact on more important and significant aspects of its broadcasting than a cooking programme.

glad there is someone else who despises Paul Hollywood - the phrase up his own backside comes to mind. Not sure on Mary Berry she's abit my way or the highway in terms of cooking, she started out in cooking areound the same time as my mother in law & they knew each other (not very well though)

KatyK Tue 13-Sept-16 09:37:48

I too find Sue and Mel unfunny and irritating.

jusnoneed Tue 13-Sept-16 09:37:25

I cannot get into this series either, I don't know if it's been there/seen that, the people or that they seem to be expecting too much to be done in too little time by amateur cooks.
And why does it need 4 presenters? So many programmes have too many people talking/mucking about for no good reason.
It may be better on 4 if they tweek things, will be interesting to see. Will have to record it though, whizz through adverts.
Maybe an Aussie version would be good, they improved Masterchef no end! lol.

Greyduster Tue 13-Sept-16 09:24:34

If I don't watch the next series, it will be because this present series is the only one that has consistently failed to hold my attention. I find myself wandering off to do something else. The programme has had its day. I can't see it surviving the transition.

Christinefrance Tue 13-Sept-16 08:39:08

I agree with Day6, Bake Off has peaked, Paul Hollywood is far too full of himself and the other presenters are getting more silly by the minute. I refrain from any comment on Ms Berry. I understand fans are disappointed as the BBC is the best vehicle for this type of programme.

gettingonabit Tue 13-Sept-16 08:35:12

I too think GBBO has had its day. I don't mind PH; he's a successful baker and knows what he's talking about, and Mary Berry IS a great role model for older women imho. I'd love to look as good as she does in that jean/jacket combo she wears at any age, let alone at her age. She's had a brilliant career and has managed to stay in the public eye. Not bad going..

Mel and Sue....no, just no. I've never found Sue Perkins remotely funny. And all that wandering around the tent making predictable double entendres about soggy bottoms? No. Stale and unfunny.

As is the programme. Stale. Time to move on, methinks.

sunseeker Tue 13-Sept-16 08:27:54

I don't watch GBBO but does it really matter which channel it is on? The programme is made by an independent production company who naturally want to make money fron a successful programme (which the BBC probably wouldn't have commissioned in house). It is possible the stars of the programme are demanding large payments and the production company have to cover those. I really don't understand why someone wouldn't watch a programme they love simply because it had moved to another channel.

kittylester Tue 13-Sept-16 06:37:59

I love Mel and Sue. And i don't think that it is only pensioners who watch gbbo - all my daughters watch it.

Day6 Tue 13-Sept-16 00:25:33

I think GBBO is becoming slightly stale, if you'll pardon the pun.

I think Paul Hollywood is an arrogant slime ball of the first order, and Mary, bless her, (dare I criticise her?) is just a bit too sugary-sweet/twee/starchy. And as for the two presenters, their well-rehearsed corny remarks and efforts to be funny (which fail) irritate me beyond belief.

I watch it because I enjoy seeing the results of the bakers' efforts. If Channel4 add advertisements at ten minute intervals to the mix, it really will become dire and a definite turn-off.

Rosieroe Mon 12-Sept-16 23:08:12

Parquerite, I mean.

Rosieroe Mon 12-Sept-16 23:06:54

That made me laugh Merlotgran. That's so like something I'd do. I'll have to check out some of Pargaritte's recipes. (She will remain that in my mind from hence forward!) ??

merlotgran Mon 12-Sept-16 22:52:50

Because of her signature on the front of Marguerite's books, I spent my teenage years convinced she was called Parquerite Patten.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 12-Sept-16 22:25:48

Rosieroe she can't hold a candle to Marguerite Patten. (Now sadly, left us)

merlotgran Mon 12-Sept-16 22:21:21

I like Mel and Sue. They inject a bit of old fashioned music hall type humour into the show. Mary Berry is Mary Berry she just has to be herself and it works.

Paul Hollywood can take a running jump.

I fear GBBO's days are numbered though.

Ana Mon 12-Sept-16 22:08:13

I like Mel and Sue too, although I don't see Mary Berry as an old crone. Paul Hollywood certainly does have a giant ego though...

gillybob Mon 12-Sept-16 22:05:30

Do we know how much MB and PH are paid ?

gillybob Mon 12-Sept-16 22:04:05

I certainly don't identify with either BF or MB. Old codgers trying to "be young". I think Sue and Mel are brilliant in the GBBO and bring a real genuine humour to what would otherwise be and old crone and a man with contact lenses and a giant ego tasting and criticising food .

I think I'm in a bad mood tonight .

Pollengran Mon 12-Sept-16 21:03:46

The trouble is that the BBC are charging a lot of licence payers for things they don't want to see. Yes, there are pensioners who applaud the likes of Mary Berry, their teeth, and Bruce Forsyth for keeping going, but there are others who don't identify with that.

I hate the patronising nonsense that thinks all older people want to see old people on TV.
I would love to see something like the 6 5 special brought back for young people to show their talent.

NanKate Mon 12-Sept-16 20:18:59

I think Channel 4 have bought GBBO.

Mary Berry came to a group of WIs in my area. She was a delight. She didn't make a charge, I think she sold some books though. She answered all our questions and was not pushy in any way.

She had polio as a child hence her hand movements at times looks a bit odd.

If I was 80 odd I would bite carefully into food, so that I didn't break a tooth.

She dresses well and is a great representative of the older generation.

Hope they get rid of Mel and Sue, their humour is dire IMO.

Welshwife Mon 12-Sept-16 20:10:23

It is made by an outside production company and I gathered they were still making the programme.

Rosieroe Mon 12-Sept-16 20:08:49

Please don't compare Mary Berry with Bruce Forsthye - I couldn't stand the man and IMO Strictly has benefitted greatly from his absence. On the contrary I think GBBO would not be the same without Mary. I think she looks lovely with her false teeth and nails and hair. My goodness most young girls these days have false hair and nails and their teeth look false they're so white. I didn't think Gransnetters would condemn an older woman for trying to look her best. I love her wealth of experience in cookery. I've bought her books and have had some great results with most recipes. She has worked hard for most of her life and for once I think "good on you" for her making as much from her popularity as she can. I despair though at the what appears to be greed on the part of the production company. Perhaps the BBC has rights to all the spin-off merchandise and that's what they can't agree on.

Ana Mon 12-Sept-16 20:08:49

Yes, the Beeb needs all the dosh it can get to pay its executives - can't afford to squander it on decent tv programmes...
