Has anyone seen this yet? I am going this evening. I have heard very good reports about it. It is directed by Ken Loach who also did Cathy, come home in the ? 1970s.

durhamjen Tue 15-Nov-16 18:21:38

That's just laughable. It's a political film. It was made to be political.
It's not about a walk in the park.
Loach was right when he said that there is too much fake nostalgia around.

Anniebach Tue 15-Nov-16 18:05:45

Bringing politics into it was sure to cause disagreement , untill then posts were fine

Why do some people always want to start a fight on a perfectly pleasant interesting thread . Keyboard warriors is an apt description !
I have not seen the film deliberately , I just know I would find it too upsetting . Kathy come home was heart wrenching and this one is supposed to be more so .

Personally I don't think it's great artistically. However it IS realistic and does indeed represent life for many people, so, yes, a good film and no, not propaganda.

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 23:37:24

Of course it is heavily on the subject, beam. What else do you expect it to be on?
It won the Palme D'Or, so yes it is good artistically.
Anyway, you said you wouldn't waste your money on it, but you wouldn't go and see it anyway once you'd read anything about it. It's not propaganda. It's what has really happened to people because of this government's ideals. Propaganda is the spreading of ideas, not reality.

Beammeupscottie Mon 14-Nov-16 23:30:00

I don't like propaganda films, whatever ideology they are pushing. The emphasis is too heavy on the subject the filmmaker wishes to take, whether it is the political left or right.
This may be a good film, artistically, but will it make any difference. I doubt it,

Anniebach Mon 14-Nov-16 23:28:25

Jrn,you really are not so interesting that I need to chase you around a thread, most of your posts are links which I don't bother to read.

Hardly told snything about the film? I now know the end , the tale of the young mother

No I haven't watched it , cinema too expensive, was going to watch it when it came to the tv,now no need to, I can save on the electricity

Criticising you ? Reminds me of Corbyn on being asked his opinion on an early general election - by a female reporter, complaining - you are harassing me , that was so funny, little wonder he will not record live on Today or only attend momentum rallies, he may be subjected to harassment , aw bless

Shouldn't read these either.

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 23:05:47

Don't be stupid, Annie. I've hardly told you anything.
Chasing me round on this thread, are you, just to criticise.

Anyway, I'm surprised you haven't seen it yet.

Beammeupscottie Mon 14-Nov-16 23:02:22

What! He dies in the end. Not wasting my money on that!

Anniebach Mon 14-Nov-16 22:54:58

Thanks Jen, always nice to be told the end of a film , no need to watch it now,you must have repeated every minute of it

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 22:48:22

It's fifty years since Cathy Come Home.

www.24housing.co.uk/news/ha-founders-return-to-mark-cathy-come-home-50th/

The founders say there is more homelessness than there was then.
Just thinking about Daniel Blake. If he hadn't died at the end what would have happened to him?
He had no money, no furniture, no home. He'd have probably died slowly.

Anniebach Mon 14-Nov-16 22:46:41

Made to watch? And I suppose made to believe it's true?

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 22:19:33

Damien Green gave his opinion on it, and he hadn't even seen it. A bit like lots of gransnetters.
I think all of the powers-that-be should be made to watch it.
How about asking them questions on it, like a school exam?

Have you seen those videos of people on PIP? Somehow I don't think the goverment will take any notice.
Theresa May has just been telling employers they need to pay more to their workers, but it won't help those who do not have work.

gettingonabit Mon 14-Nov-16 20:35:37

Really thought provoking film. Reminded me a bit of Boys from the Blackstuff. I kind of knew what the outcome would be, somehow.

Hope the powers-that-be watch this doubt it.

durhamjen Sun 13-Nov-16 00:11:37

I agree, Izabella, and I hope it produces some change in the demonisation of benefit claimants.

Izabella Sat 12-Nov-16 20:33:42

A truly wonderful film

durhamjen Sat 12-Nov-16 14:42:54

The people of Edinburgh have been telling Damien Green what they think of his response to I, Daniel Blake.

kittysjones.wordpress.com/2016/11/08/damian-green-dismisses-offensive-un-report-on-uk-disability-rights-the-guardian/

Not just about I, Daniel Blake, but about the way this government treats disability, and the UN inspectors. Try not to laugh too much at the government response.

mumofmadboys Sun 06-Nov-16 17:48:37

That's a great idea durhamjen.

durhamjen Sun 06-Nov-16 17:09:44

I've recommended Ken Loach for the Churchill awards for this film.

mumofmadboys Sun 06-Nov-16 16:27:55

I think I saw your post several days ago lazigirl but knew little about the film then. Sorry if your post went unnoticed!

Lazigirl Sun 06-Nov-16 16:19:16

Thanks for bringing it to attention again mofmadboys as everyone should see it. How come my posts are sneaking through now? Have had trouble posting for days!

Lazigirl Sun 06-Nov-16 16:16:20

Saw this film and posted on it days ago but no one responded. Although I know it, it reinforced what a callous government we have. On the plus side there are still good and caring individuals about. Yes, plenty of tissues required.

mumofmadboys Sun 06-Nov-16 16:12:21

I'm bumping this because I would really recommend it. It's a film you won't forget.
