Hurrah! There is a 2-part special scheduled for 19 December BBC1 (part 1). Absolutely loved this drama series and can't believe it's 2 years since the last (series 3) when we were promised there would be a series 4. It never happened!

We lived in that area for 40 years so know it well and recognise a lot of the locations used. Really looking forward to it.

didn't

Ana Wed 21-Dec-16 18:46:11

She did, din't she? I suppose it's possible, even at 52...

I thought the storyline was poor. The wine delivery woman was totally OTT and not believable. I am not sure that I would be interested in watching another series based on this Christmas special. I thought Sarah Lancashire looked pregnant too, she seemed to be employing all the tricks of hiding her middle.

Greyduster I find the Yorkshire scenery beautiful, never mind the weather. The bleakness is unique.

I think its the same farm that Gillian is in. I love those type of Yorkshire stone buildings. The new home for the rest is a lovely stone farm building with wide windows - some would have needed wide windows for light because people wove cloth at home and needed day light.

I cant wait for more. And I hope no one minds me saying, dramas need miserable characters in them - because dramas are written to dramatise life! flowers

Great to see my favourite pub in one scene, Shibden Mill Inn, wish it was nearer- I live in the soft south!

Jalima Wed 21-Dec-16 15:46:16

I haven't found that the scenery inspires me to visit that area, there must be nicer areas of Yorkshire. If we're talking bleak I prefer Dartmoor myself although Last Tango in Moretonhampstead is a bit of a mouthful. Lustleigh perhaps?

Welshwife Wed 21-Dec-16 14:22:11

Most of the scenery around the Halifax/ Harrogate area is very beautiful - I find the bleaker side is along the M62 and that is Wuthering Heights type landscape. Strangely where the Bronte's lived in Howarth is in lovely scenery too. Maybe they are mowing the grass a bit more nowadays!! grin

Heehee tchgrin Greyduster .... I am a Yorkshire girl, but haven't lived there for a long long time.

Greyduster Wed 21-Dec-16 13:45:09

Eeh! T'scenery,s not bleak up 'ere, Roses, lass! Tha' just has ter get't weather reight fo' t'enjoy it! (Translations are available upon request ?).

rosesarered Wed 21-Dec-16 13:37:23

I also think the Yorkshire scenery looks bleak! Very Wuthering Heights.

rosesarered Wed 21-Dec-16 13:34:35

Watched both episodes back to back last night.Enjoyed the first one, got bored with the second one.
Mind you, in real life I can't imagine that Gillian would ever have stayed living next to the barn where she had killed her husband.Would have gone from there ages ago.
My other gripe is the amount of wine they all drink.....with every meal.
Some characters are OTT others are becoming caricatures of themselves.

Anya Wed 21-Dec-16 13:05:09

All a bit 'willing suspension of disbelief' wasn't it? No impressed with storyline.

Christinefrance Wed 21-Dec-16 12:45:29

Quite disappointed in the second episode, something of an anticlimax I thought.
The characters didn't seem to gel for me, and why was Sarah L constantly wearing a poncho type garment. hmm

Liz46 Wed 21-Dec-16 11:50:30

The snoring scene made me laugh. It's just what happens with us.

Maranta Wed 21-Dec-16 11:11:40

That's partly what I meant about them being self centred although filming with young children must be difficult.

Jalima Wed 21-Dec-16 10:24:19

I don't think Gillian's half brother was there; the odd man at the Christmas was Flora's father, wasn't he - although no-one seems to interact with the poor child very much. She just seems to quietly get on with whatever she's doing without any stimulating conversation with any adults.
When they were sitting in the, presumably warm, hospital I was shouting - 'take that child's coat and hat off, she must be sweltered'!

Jalima Wed 21-Dec-16 10:18:31

I did wonder if it was a different farm - very similar but the front garden looked different and I don't remember The Barn being there on the left although it may have been.

merlotgran Wed 21-Dec-16 09:46:53

I thought the farm was the same. Could be wrong though.

I preferred the contrast between Caroline's ultra trendy, expensive home and Gillian's shabby but welcoming farmhouse. I couldn't see why she had to buy somewhere so run down even if it had bags of potential (as they say on Escape to the Country)

I suppose there's still some meat on the bones for another series otherwise why all that stuff about the wills? Robbie's gone off to Canada where all unwanted BBC cast members get banished and sooner or later Gillian is going to have to unlock the barn door because all the workshop equipment is in there.

So much for my theory that it was an illegal immigrant smelly old tramp hiding under a pile of old sacks!

TBH I couldn't keep tabs on all the characters. Was Gillian's half brother who turned up in the last series there?

Alima Wed 21-Dec-16 08:51:42

Do so hope there is another series. As well as another Happy Valley, Sally Wainwright is also writing a new series apparently so it's a case of when she can do all the script writing. Hope she doesn't leave it too long, some of the cast in LTiH are getting on a bit.
I really like the way the relationship between Gillian and Caroline. They hated each other at first but now seem to have become friends. Must admit I was getting Caroline's new house mixed up with the farm, they are using a different farm this time.
What's all this about grim Northerners and soft Southerners? I'm from the Midlands so entirely neutral!

PRINTMISS Wed 21-Dec-16 08:48:34

I enjoyed it, the acting was good, you could HEAR what was being said (mostly) and of course again it was a story, so some facts have to be distorted and exaggerated, but there was a certain amount of truth in it as well.

Greyduster Wed 21-Dec-16 08:35:43

I really enjoyed it last night too, but I thought the episode lost its way a bit towards the end. I don't know how there can be enough meat on the bones to make another series, but I wouldn't object.

Shanma Tue 20-Dec-16 23:58:52

I enjoyed it again tonight too, and I think it has been left so that a new series could be a distinct possibility. I do hope so.

I like the characters, all of them, and I do like Gillian, the cast is Great, not a bad actor between them.

To those of you who think Caroline's new house is grotty, if I had that house I would be in seventh heaven, it is my dream house. I would never be out of that kitchen, and the windows are to die for.

Grim up north??? Nooo we are just more " Real" than you soft southerners grin

SparklyGrandma Tue 20-Dec-16 23:04:14

I enjoyed Last Tango in Halifax this evening - some of it is very funny, some scary moments and as always the Yorkshire scenery is gorgeous.

BlueBelle Tue 20-Dec-16 22:18:20

Alina me too isn't it funny how some little thing like that can stay in your head when you can't remember what you had for dinner yesterday I think the acting is great and I do like Gillian not everyone is jolly jolly I think she plays a great part but two episodes is not enough only a taster and now I want some more. The play was a bit slapstick for me not sure where that came into it

Ana Tue 20-Dec-16 22:14:34

Well, there were a few good laugh-out-loud moments tonight, but I felt too much was left up in the air, presumably for the next possible series.

After making so much of the 'haunted' barn it seems that bolting the door shut is all it needed! And what was the point of the ouja board scene?
