84 Charing Cross Road

I've seen this film several times, it's a lovely story, with good acting. I recognised Judy Dench's voice before seeing her name on the credits.
Apparently the building now houses a McDonalds restaurant.

Some of the John Donne passages are set in the stones around Exeter Cathedral.

Such a lovely, gentle film about feisty American woman. I loved it and had to dig out some John Donne poems afterwards to find the bit she quoted. OH watched the first half hour and decided nothing much was happening. He gave up on it and went off to watch some sport on the other TV. Philistine! It was so poignant and I felt quite sad afterwards, as another new year was about to begin, about the way in which time passes so quickly. I have recorded it so will watch it again.

Now here's a film that doesn't mess with the story! Imagine if they'd decided to have them actually meet up. As it is it's pitched exactly right with Judi Dench pleased to finally meet her but not 100% certain what the relationship really was. Do try and find the book if you haven't read it.

I saw or read that years ago. I cannot remember much about it.

I've seen it before and remembered that I'd enjoyed it so I was pleased to see it again. I'd for gotten that Judy Dench was in it though. I haven't read the book so will give that a try.

A lovely film of a delightful book. Anthony Hopkins does "suffering sensitive" so well, and Anne Bancroft is always great to watch. OH couldn't get over Judi Dench looking so very young.

Beautiful film, based on fact. The book is wonderful too. Recorded to watch in Peace when OH is at bowls!

I kept trying to work out who was playing his wife. I was surprised when I saw the credits

I enjoyed the book too Wilma. Long time ago, but I have just googled it and it was based on actual letters exchanged between the bookshop owner and Helen Hanff. The film and the play expanded it to introduce extra characters apparently. Will try and find on catchup. Thanks!

Have always enjoyed this film

I saw the play years ago and the memory stayed with me. The original book is worth a read too, it's written in the style of the letters to and from the woman and the bookshop owner (if I've remembered correctly).

I agree a really lovely if poignant film. I saw Miriam Margolis on stage in the Anne Bancroft role she was excellent too.
