I love it, I enjoyed last nights start to the new series. Any other call the midwife fans here ?

Apparently she had a baby girl by C section having been put off a natural birth by the programme.

Peep Sun 11-Feb-18 22:43:10

Yes, Helen George and Jack Ashton had a baby girl sometime last autumn.

Jalima1108 Sun 11-Feb-18 22:43:59

Yes, that's right Greenfinch they had a baby girl called Wren.

SueDonim Sun 11-Feb-18 23:59:41

Oh, that reason for Trixie's temporary leave had totally passed me by! grin Thanks for the explanation.

I didn't think tonight was a great episode. The Pakistani family story felt trite and patronising. The pica story seemed silly. Sister Monica Joan's cataracts was more interesting, though.

My dear sister was a nurse and had a colleague with an alcohol problem. One day she turned up for work under the influence, was marched to office and told she had to go to a nearby residential unit for treatment. She was there for six weeks, no family contact. She recovered and was so grateful afterwards. She hadn't realised just how bad her problem was. There was no pussy footing round, it seemed brutal but it worked.

Just read your post, Christinefrance, thanks. I'm afraid the TV/remote situation is only the tip of the iceberg, you wouldn't believe the half if it but it's not my problem to discuss.
I enjoyed last night's episode but not as much as usual.

I loved that story about the two wives. I thought of that painting by Leonardo of St Ann holding the adult Virgin on her knee.
However I don't like the doctor's soppy facial expressions.

Doc Turner is coming across as quite creepy and who's looking after the small children now the au pair has gone back to Paris?

I hope this poster pic of The Virgin with Saint Ann will appear!

Sorry, No. You'd have to scroll quite far down to find it. I think that the story of the two wives makes a worthy moral point. The whole family is important for the child and the older woman actively cooperates and gains more than her own peace of mind.

Anniebach Mon 12-Feb-18 10:29:59

I enjoyed the programme, there must be women who can relate to the two wives story and Sister Monica Joan's struggle with fear of the scalpel was so moving

Anniebach Mon 12-Feb-18 10:34:00

But St Anne was mother of the virgin , big difference to first wife who is childless and has to come to terms with second wife's child.

SueDonim Mon 12-Feb-18 11:45:02

I thought the two wives story depicted the subjugation of the two women to the man, not a sweet happy family. And the child-bride!

Luckygirl Mon 12-Feb-18 12:25:27

I too kept wondering where the children were merlot since the Turners have dispensed with the services of the au pair.

The midwife actress's pregnancy was a bit unfortunate as they were trying to cover it up at a time when it might have fitted the storyline rather well - a pregnant unmarried midwife - tsk, tsk!

It is a very cheesy programme - so why do I watch it? grin

Yes indeed and I did remember that. I just felt that the smile on St Anne's face is so wise and understanding that it applies to the two wives situation too. And probably many more similar human situations where ego is not given pride of place.

Yes, I thought she looked enceinte. And wouldn't Sister Monica Joan have had her eyes tested by an optician first ?
We seemed to leap straight to surgery.
Yes and they do have ages of spare time for meaningful chats. I was always rushed of my feet.

While I hear everything every one says about this prog, and at times agree, I still love it was moved to tears over poor Trixie (I KNOW it's rubbish!!) Felt desperately sorry for the family from Pakistan, was totally in sympathy with Sister Monica Joan, loved the way Fred tried and succeeded in helping her, love the Turners and their ups and downs and of course Sister Julienne, wise understanding, fair and firm. What's not to like?!,
Clearly my intellect is limited and clearly I'm one of those dim uneducated people who shouldn't have the vote under any circumstances!!

Ilovecheese Wed 14-Feb-18 13:00:25

While it is nice that the actress playing Trixie had time off because she was pregnant, I still don't see why poor Trixie is never allowed to have any lasting happiness.
Also I agree with Suedonin that the two wives story was about a man having his cake and eating it.

Anniebach Wed 14-Feb-18 13:35:21

With you niggly ?

nigglynellie Wed 14-Feb-18 15:30:45

Thank you annie sunshine

grannyqueenie Wed 14-Feb-18 21:48:38

I’m such a soft touch, I can’t help loving this programme no matter how soppy some bits of it are! It!s a lovely harmless bit of escapism.

SueDonim Wed 14-Feb-18 23:15:10

Oh yes, I love it too, despite my cynicism winning out at times when the boundaries are pushed a bit too far!

JessM Wed 21-Feb-18 14:04:34

LOL they were struggling to disguise that pregnancy in the end weren't they. Last time I spotted a pregnancy in long running drama was The Mentalist, where the actress "went on a course" and otherwise was suddenly a computer expert and only seen from mid-chest upwards. smile I adore it. It's a rare thing - a programme in which nearly all the main characters are women, along with most of the plots.

Jalima1108 Wed 21-Feb-18 14:07:46

I think I posted on a previous thread that I thought that Barbara was a much more suitable partner for the vicar than Trixie.

Sorry, Trixie - I got it wrong grin
RL does not always imitate art.

I love this programme for its gentleness whilst dealing with difficult issues. Yes, it's cheesy at times, and the doctors expressions at times can look a bit sickly and the background music over sentimental and not always necessary. I know these things, but still enjoy the way the stories are delivered ( sorry, no pun intended there), with some very good acting overall. It's easy watching for a Sunday evening.
