testament to youth

Testament of Youth, Testament of Experience and Testament of Friendship. I recommend reading all three. The second covers the years 1925-1950 and the third, Brittain's friendship with Winifred Holtby

The book makes a huge impact; I am surprised it hasn't been promoted more this anniversary year by bookshops.
The film lacks depth compared with the television version, but it had far more episodes to explore the emotional impact of war, and also the slightly contradictory nature of Vera Brittain.
An excellent book for book club discussion, although you need two months to read it.

I saw it when it first came out and bought the DVD as soon as it was available. I have watched it with DDiL and in a year or two will watch it with DGC.

I did see the film, but like all films it was a hyped up and dumbed down version of the true story.

I also bought the book, but recently bought a book containing the letters between Vera Brittain and her brother, fiance and friends she corresponded with and she drained much of the emotion out when she wrote the book, probably self-protection, she just couldn't bring herself to relive it.

Alima It was a film. Enjoy ifyou watch it.

Suki The letters book is “Letters from a lost generation” and is well worth reading too. It has the correspondence between Vera and the 4 friends, all of whom died in WW1. The letters seem to highlight the pointlessness of war.

I'm sure the book is still available, as well as a collection of Vera Brittain's letters written during WW1 - can't remember the title of that one, both books lent to Granddaughter.

Fabulous book by Shirley Williams mother Vera.I first read it in my teens .I 'm just off to see if its still available on Amazon

I enjoyed the recent film too but for me the BBC serial had the edge.

The 1979 BBC TV serial of Testament of Youth , with Cheryl Campbell as Vera Brittain is available on DVD. I loved every minute when it was first shown and recently bought the DVD for my 16 year old grand daughter to watch.

Was it the film travelsafar? I have not seen that but there was a TV serial absolutely yonks ago of Testament of Youth and it has stayed with me because it was so good.
