Christmas TV?

I've just looked through the Christmas Radio Times eagerly looking for treats to look forward to but couldn't find anything special as far as I could see. Any Grans spotted anything particularly hopeful or worth looking out for?

KatyK Thu 20-Dec-18 17:34:06

Oh yes Luther. Can't wait for the new series.

Maggiemaybe Thu 20-Dec-18 17:02:39

I just got all excited about The Queen & I and got the highlighter out again... It’s on Sky! I don’t have Sky! envy

Not to worry. DH and I are just watching last Christmas’s Luther, which we never got round to. Oh, it’s good (and very creepy).

Sorry I haven't read all these posts and sorry if I am repeating what someone else has juts said but we watched The Christmas Chronicles on Netflix - Fab U Lus family film.

lemongrove Thu 20-Dec-18 14:13:38

I have done much happy ticking things too, The Dead Room ( ghost story with Simon Callow) on Christmas Eve, The ABC Murders (Poirot) on Boxing Day and the 27 and 28th.
Upstart Crow ( Christmas special) Christmas Day.
Hold The Sunset 23rd Dec ( Alison Steadman and John Cleese) The Queen And I ( from Sue Townsend’s wonderful book) Christmas Eve, and lots of animal and travel programmes too numerous to mention.
All I need now is a giant box of Maltesers.?

Well, I must be easily pleased because I've marked more than enough programmes with my pink highlighter to see us through the festive period and far beyond, and I've only looked at BBC, ITV and Channel 4. tchsmile

We like the Christmas specials for starters - University Challenge, Only Connect, HIGNFY, the Big Fat Quiz of the Year, First Dates, the Gogglebox compilation. Then I fancy Les Miserables and Luther. Call the Midwife, of course, Doctor Who and possibly Watership Down, The ABC Murders and Torvill & Dean. Other possibles are Stephen Merchant's Click & Collect, Simon Callow's The Dead Room. There's the Royal Ballet's Swan Lake, and a new series of Back in Time for (School, this time) starting just after New Year. The Royal Institution Christmas lectures. I'll also be reminiscing over the classic episode of The Royle Family. There are some good films on - I'd recommend Eddie the Eagle and Philomena to anyone who hasn't seen them. And a few things I need to record for the grandsons. Oh, and Corrie - no doubt there'll be a few daft storylines coming to even dafter conclusions.

I think I've enough there to see me through the Winter..... tchgrin

I'm looking forward to "Call the midwife". I know it's on the sentimental side, but I enjoy watching it, and it's a bit of an antidote to all the worrying news in the world. I will also give "Poirot" a try, though I will always associate Poirot with David Suchet and his interpretation of the character. I think he was brilliant. ?

Been reading this post in the hope someone mentions something that appeals. Cannot get interested in TV recently, apart from CtMidwife and maybe Watership Down. Last year we binged watched all the series of Line of Duty over the holiday. Will see what iplayer has to offer this year. (Far too much to hope for some decent drama such as Last Tango in Halifax. The BBC bigwigs have given themselves a pay rise instead).

The downside of having the RT delivered is that we haven’t seen it yet. It should be sitting on the mat this morning, so once I’ve hauled myself out of bed I’ll consult it, and no doubt add my complaints to the thread. Now where’s that highlighter?

TwiceAsNice Me too, I love the carols on Christmas Eve, it is my signal to open the sherry and partake of a glass or two.
The only time i drink as it is a tradition with me, Sherry, a Mince Pie and the Carols, love it. Enjoy and have a great Christmas.

oldbatty Sun 16-Dec-18 11:25:44

Anybody who has not yet seen Spirale or Line of Duty , get a bottle of something nice and some mince pies and binge.

Miep1 Sun 16-Dec-18 11:22:32

I'm looking forward to 'Call the Midwife'

TwiceAsNice Sun 16-Dec-18 09:09:50

Will watch Call the Midwife, GreT British Bakeoff Special and Strictly Special. Also will watch the Watership Down drama and University Challenge graduates programmes but the best for me is Carols from Kings on Christmas Eve , then I know Christmas has begun

I only posted to lament the lack of the big 'specials' like Downton/Victoria/Poirot/Maigret etc which have been highlights in previous years.

sunseeker Sun 16-Dec-18 08:11:51

Don't we have this discussion every year tchsmile I rarely watch TV - prefer to watch something from my collection of films. I watch the news and that's about it

Grandma2213 Sat 15-Dec-18 23:31:09

MOnica I do watch quite a bit of TV but find it's more likely to be what I don't like at holiday times, especially Christmas. I do enjoy documentaries, especially about children (or sometimes adults). "Babies: Their Wonderful World' was a recent one. There have been a few drama series I have watched too. I have really enjoyed 'Death and Nightingales' which was a bit different. My guilty secret is 'I'm a Celebrity. Get Me Out of Here' which I thought was really funny this year.

I also like Inrrealise that they don't take long to watch especially when fast forwarding adverts,

I have no idea what I meant by this in my post. Maybe the TV distracted me! grin

By the way I gave up ironing years ago.

crystaltipps Sat 15-Dec-18 08:35:30

The film “Light between Oceans” is now on Netflix, think some of you will enjoy especially if you’ve read the book.

travelsafar Sat 15-Dec-18 07:55:46

sodapop i agree re netflix. Was only talking bout cancelling it last night. I only joined as i wanted to watch The Crown. As the new series has not happened may cancel after Xmas.

M0nica Sat 15-Dec-18 06:49:40

Grandma2213, you are not alone. I watch little or no television at any time of year. I am not good at just sitting and watching. I always need to be doing something else at the same time. Reading, sewing, chatting, and as a result I am not really watching the programme so I lose track, then it becomes an irritant so I switch it off.

The one time I watch tv is when doing the ironing. I do not intend to do much ironing over Christmas tchgrin

Grandma2213 Sat 15-Dec-18 01:40:48

I think there is something wrong with me after reading this I found the bits of Downton I saw, tedious. Similarly couldn't get into 'Call the Midwife' and don't like 'Strictly' , 'X Factor' etc. Game of Thrones ... no interest and James Bond ....Noooooo! Annoying man whoever plays him! Poirot I find creepy so don't fancy the new one.

I have very little time to watch telly at Christmas to be fair but am likely to record Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Gogglebox or Doctor Who to watch at my leisure. I also like Inrrealise that they don't take long to watch especially when fast forwarding adverts,

Onestepbeyond Fri 14-Dec-18 23:51:59

No tele for nearly twenty years... tchsmile

dragonfly46 Fri 14-Dec-18 22:21:58

Not Going Out next Friday - I love Lee Mac

Shizam Fri 14-Dec-18 22:11:23

Xmas telly is always terrible. It’s traditional!

I'll be at Kempton on 26/27th, all being well. Always a wonderful atmosphere and I can catch up with so many friends.

sodapop Fri 14-Dec-18 21:33:46

We are not getting on well with Netflix, there seems to be very little we want to watch. Think I will cancel after Christmas. Not sure if we get everything that's available in the UK here in France.

GabriellaG54 Fri 14-Dec-18 21:26:42

I'll watch those old chestnuts, Trains Planes and Automobiles, White Christmas, Tin Men (love it) Twins and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I might also squeeze in a bit of Kramer v Kramer. grin
