Christmas TV?

I've just looked through the Christmas Radio Times eagerly looking for treats to look forward to but couldn't find anything special as far as I could see. Any Grans spotted anything particularly hopeful or worth looking out for?

DGD aged 10, is very excited about seeing The Midnight Gang, based on the book she has read, by David Walliams. It’s on Boxing Day at 7.30pm, on BBC1, and after seeing the trailer, wrote me a large reminder and stuck it on the fridge.

Les Miserables as a drama might be good. Not sure about the new Poirot. David Suchet was so perfect at it.
Masses of soaps clogging up the schedules (and I like them - but enough enough)

Many repeats Jane none of which I want to see again. I have no excuse for not having a massive clearout here.

Yes I'm reserving judgement on the new Poirot Jane10 no moustaches and no accent. Don't mess with these classics I say.

ninathenana Thu 13-Dec-18 15:26:46

I'm another one unsure of the new Poirot. Les Mis looks good but may be a bit "heavy" for me.
Haven't seen anything else that I'm looking forward to.

I'm a bit disappointed at ITV on Christmas day. Downton Abbey used to be such a treat. This year a docudrama on Torville and Dean. Oh joy. Not!

Shirleyw Thu 13-Dec-18 17:52:07

Call the midwife new Christmas special....
Oh yes Jane10, I to looked forward to downtown abbey.....I doubt if I shall watch torvil and dean lol....

Each Christmas I buy the Christmas copy of the Radio Times and go through it, marking up allt he programmes I might watch.

Each Christmas between watching Christmas DVDs (like The Muppet's Christmas Carol, Its a Wonderful Life etc) and playing scrabble, doing jigsaws, going out for all sorts of reasons and this year DGD is getting a sewing machine for Christmas so that will occupy us as well, we usually end up watching nothing, except, occasionally, the news.

EllanVannin Thu 13-Dec-18 17:55:31

I'll be watching my " Talking Pictures " channel. Old black and white originals like " A Christmas Carol ". This is Christmas for me.

Jane10 I miss Downton and would have loved to see more of it, but I guess it ran it’s course.I live near the village that doubles as Downton village and we often walk there and have a drink. The church is lovely ( the whole village is!)
I have bought the tv mag but not looked at it yet , I enjoy highlighting things to watch.

I always look forward to watching Call the Midwife - and will miss Downton this year

gerry86 Fri 14-Dec-18 10:38:54

We rarely watch things as they are broadcast and record instead, we're trying to get a bit of a stockpile up for over Christmas in case there is not a lot we would want to watch.

JessK Fri 14-Dec-18 10:42:33

Call the Midwife for me too - really nostalgic. Other than that there seems to be a lot of repeats.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 14-Dec-18 10:54:18

Looking at the TV mags I am thankful to have enough recordings that will well and truly see me through until xmas /new year is done and dusted and ready to start
afresh on what the channels have in store for us come 2019.

We have recently subscribed to Netflix & I think it’s amazing! No adverts and pure pleasure choosing something! I’m currently enjoying ‘The Crown’ and have just started series 2. This Christmas, viewing will be wonderful - there’s so much to choose from! And at £7.99 per month that’s only £2 a week - a £1 each. Great value would highly recommend!

Sarahmob Fri 14-Dec-18 11:03:15

I love Netflix too and think it’s great value for money. We’ll certainly be using it over Christmas as the trawl through the Radio. times revealed very little of any interest.

Have been through the Christmas edition of the Radio Times and have not found much worth watching. I will watch the ballet, Swan Lake and Les Misrables just to see how close it is to the book.. (the French version with Gerard Depardieu is the best). Good thing I have a lot of DVDs of classics such as Barchester Chronicles, Rebecca, etc. As well as some oldies on Talking Pictures, plus those ordered from Cinema Paradiso.
I think I buy the Radio Times just find not to watch!

Sweetpea60 Fri 14-Dec-18 11:33:58

I will be looking out for the bishops wife with carey grant such a lovely film also fallen angel with gary sinese lovely story .if its not on tv i will watch it on youtube. Other than that fed up with all the repeats year after year.

Jane10 Fri 14-Dec-18 11:36:24

Netflix bamboozles me. Too much choice! However, I'll bravely persevere. I enjoyed Mad Men.

Saggi Fri 14-Dec-18 11:44:29

Tend not to watch tv ...especially at Christmas ... try Netflix people...watch what you want when you want it.

maryhoffman37 Fri 14-Dec-18 12:17:13

I thought it was a dismal line-up. Only the Poirot might appeal but I'm not sure we'll enjoy John Malcovitch's interpretation.

Grandma70s Fri 14-Dec-18 12:27:25

On Christmas Day I want to watch Swan Lake, Upstart Crow and Call the Midwife (even though I know it will be desperately sentimental). They clash, but I can catch up on iPlayer. I haven’t noticed anything very interesting after that.

oldgaijin Fri 14-Dec-18 12:53:49

Royal Institute Christmas lectures for me plus Call the Midwife.

Itsmyfirstrodeo Fri 14-Dec-18 14:09:37

I was also underwhelmed at the Christmas line up. I am looking forward to Agatha & the truth of murder on channel 5, Sat 23rd.
And another vote for netflix. I wouldn't be without it now ?
