Nothing like a Dame

That is very possibly the greatest piece of writing in English ever, MawBroon.

I am more of a Maggie Smith fan than a Judi Dench fan. There’s something astringent about Dame Maggie that appeals to me. One of the few advantages of being old is being able to remember the greats of earlier years. I saw Laurence Olivier and the young Maggie Smith in Othello. I stood all the way through it, because I couldn’t get (or afford) a seat.

When I first saw this - last year? Earlier this year? I was underwhelmed.
However I am realising that my mood at any time must make a difference as I really enjoyed it tonight, laughing out loud at quotations such as “I am for Argos”
The ending, Prospero’s speech from The Tempest was what DD2 read at her father’s Requiem Mass and the more often I hear it, the more I think Shakespeare knew a thing or two about life , and indeed the end of life. .
:
“Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air:
And like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp'd tow'rs, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.”
