Anyone watch the first part of this drama tonight? It’s not the musical version in case anyone was wondering but straight from Victor Hugo.

I wasn't going to say anything about Marius because I wasn't quite sure about him - he seemed rather aloof.

Yes Adeel Akhtar was brilliant!
It was very kind of Jean Valjean to give him a thousand francs and not a boot up the backside.

Me too.

Blinko Tue 05-Feb-19 17:07:07

Ah, that's where I've seen Josh O'Connor before, The Durells. Racking my brain, I was. Thanks, Day6

I thought it was wonderfully made. Really enjoyable. I imagine the musical version will seem a bit trite after that, although I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time.

Must admit, Marius in this version was a bit of a strange one. Saw the actor in the Durrels, and he seemed the same sniffy, unsmiling person in this too, although we know he was kind and genuine. Under-acting maybe? Just not the dashing hero really, given his often pained facial expressions grin

I wanted to shout !Life is too short!" at Javert, with his bee in his bonnet regarding Valjean. His obsession did seem a bit OTT but V Hugo was responsible for his character.

Adeel Akhtar's portrayal of nasty Thenardier was brilliant I thought. If anyone should have had his comeuppance it should have been him.

The whole thing was most enjoyable. I am tempted to watch it again.

Puts Poldark in the shade, doesn't it? (Dons tin hat...)

BlueBelle Tue 05-Feb-19 14:57:01

Definitely a pride thing and the more he slipped through his fingers the more obsessive he got about finding him Both acted superbly his failure was like a Japanese Hari Kari he couldn’t bear his own shame hence his suicide
I will miss it so much on Sunday evenings it’s been the high light of my week

Javert & Jean Valjean were similar in many ways. It was also, for Javert, a matter of power and pride. His list of reforms indicated he had learned some compassion from Jean but his pride made him take his life.

Labaik Tue 05-Feb-19 12:43:12

Maybe it's the fact that Javert wasn't able to break him, either mentally or physically Blinko. I wonder if the book explains it better?

Anja Mon 04-Feb-19 22:43:18

Superb from beginning to end.

Blinko Mon 04-Feb-19 22:16:35

I loved it. Though I haven't read the book, I understand this production was pretty faithful to it.

I thought Javert was superb. What I can't understand is why Javert was so obsessed with someone who at first had only stolen a loaf of bread. Would you spend your whole life tracking them down to imprison them yet again for such a piffling thing. It seemed like a vey thin premise to me.

We were enthralled all the way on this one. Acting of the highest quality, great production values and for once the background music enhanced the story-telling rather than distracted from it. A total triumph in our house.

I thought the last episode was rather dark and I couldn't see what was happening. They also needed to teach the whole cast how to say Bonjour and Monsieur. It sounded like budge o'er mushuh half the time.

merlotgran Mon 04-Feb-19 16:42:34

Loved it!

Sar53 Mon 04-Feb-19 15:47:29

I too loved it and found the ending very moving. I've watched the film and seen the stage show, which I absolutely adored, but this adaptation was just as good. Call the Midwife and Les Miserables, wonderful Sunday evening viewing.

Labaik Mon 04-Feb-19 14:41:39

I'm so glad I didn't remember the ending. Was convinced that the phone would ring; it never rings except when I'm watching the last episode of something wonderful. But it didn't. Boy was I in tears. Even found myself loving Cosette who I'd found truly irritating up until the last half hour. What amazing acting/directing/producing etc etc. Hoping to see it on stage next year when it comes my way.

Kittye Mon 04-Feb-19 09:50:29

I’ve not read the book, but I’ve seen the stage production and the film. (many times) I enjoyed them both, but much preferred the tv version. Loved it! I thought the cast were outstanding

PECS Mon 04-Feb-19 09:45:24

Harrigran what did you notice?

JessK Mon 04-Feb-19 09:42:26

A fine adaptation true to the book. I loved it too.

PECS Mon 04-Feb-19 06:56:59

I rarely weep at film or TV.. but my eyes were leaking at reunion scene in the convent garden. I think it has been a high quality production from start to finish. The acting was strong and the direction good too. Worth whatever bit of my licence fee gets to the beeb!

sodapop Mon 04-Feb-19 06:49:55

I enjoyed it a lot, I'm sorry its finished. It's unusual to have two good programmes on the same evening like Midwife and Les Mis.

jeanio Sun 03-Feb-19 23:21:33

Yes I enjoyed it tonight but tears after that and The Midwife as well. What am I going to watch now?

Urmstongran Sun 03-Feb-19 23:13:54

I cried my eyes out the last half hour of it tonight. ?

SueDonim Sun 03-Feb-19 23:12:25

One of my sons Facetimed me at ten to ten, arrrggghhh! I was totally immersed in it until then.

I've really enjoyed it and thought it got better and better as it went on.

Jalima1108 Sun 03-Feb-19 23:01:11

I usually notice continuity slip-ups, modern discrepancies in period dramas, but I was so enrapt I must have missed them harrigran.

Jalima1108 Sun 03-Feb-19 22:59:54

I loved it too
sad

However, I do want something a bit more cheerful now as a contrast for Sunday evening viewing!
