Radio 2

I am becoming very disappointed in radio 2 as it’s music genre seems to have changed from easy listening to disco/rap. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have had to turn it off whilst driving because it’s just a noise coming out. I don’t want to listen to classical music or rap. I’m at a loss for what channel I can listen to, especially in the car.
Any ideas please

I love classic fm, especially whilst driving, listen at home too. For a change local radio, although now belonging to a large conglomerate, and radio 3 or4, .

Well, that was a smooth transition over a five-year gap!

I like Radio 2, some presenters more than others. I’ve enjoyed Gary Davis the last three weeks, I particularly like Vernon, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley, Jamie Cullen, Rylan, Lisa Tarbuck (who is alternative, but really funny), and Claudia. I wish Gary had his own daily show.

Oh Lisa Tarbuck is so absolutely bonkers it's hilarious.
I love the descriptions of the 'skating' outfits and locations - I always imagine myself wearing something with a tiffany blue marabou feather skirt & sequined top (as you would) 😂.
I don't often listen to her Saturday evening show live, but replay it later in the week on BBC sounds "Alexa - Ask BBC Sounds to play Lisa Tarbuck".

And I forgot Dermot O’Leary, who always plays interesting music I haven’t heard before but like.

I loved Radio 2 in the days of Terry Wogan, stayed with it through all the changes- Chris Evans, Zoe Ball... endured rather than enjoyed , just background music whilst getting up and out in the morning - but finally left along with Ken Bruce, following him and Popmaster to Greatest Hits Radio. I've really enjoyed Celebrity Popmaster
this week. I can't find GHR on my car radio, but I've got the app on my phone so I can play that while I'm driving. The adverts don't bother me, and Steve Wright is there in the afternoon.
I'm not surprised Radio 2 is losing listeneners, it's become unrecognisable although Sara Cox and Jo Whiley are still worth a listen and I always listen to Tony Blackburn's Sounds of the Sixties' on BBC Sounds.

I like Vernon Kaye, but I'm still grieving the loss of Ken Bruce & 'Pop Master' 😢.
Vernon's '10 to the top' is a poor replacement.

Both Zoe Ball and Vernon Kay are paid so much to be on Radio 2 and yet they are off such a lot. I must admit Zoe is growing on me but I cannot standing listening to Vernon Kay, although I like him as a person, but on the radio Nooooooo. Gary Davis all the way for me.

That's Scala Radio!

I've been listening to Simon Mayo's Scale Radio since it began 6 weeks ago. The morning shows are a real mixture of classical music, requests, chat to musicians and composers. I'm rather surprised that I'm enjoying it so much.

I'm an aging rock chick and listen to Absolute Rock or Planet Rock. I like Ken Bruce, Steve Wright and Scott Mills for humour though.

SAM radio is great - serious about music - play good stuff of our generation but i also prefer classic FM anyway - Steve Wrights in afternoon is still good sometimes but again too much modern stuff - sometimes in car now i go for just lovely silence as I drive through country lanes most of the time.

Mellow Magic is really good. One or two of the presenters used to be with Terry Wogan on his morning show (eg. Fran Godfrey).

I've found my local BBC radio station plays a great selection of music and the lunchtime programme which is news and topical issues with a phone in has a great presenter.Streets ahead of Jeremy Vine.I still
Listen to Ken Bruce though. And actually don't mind Sarah Cox.

Smooth Radio and Magic FM are the only radio stations I can bear to listen to for music now.

Listening to the dentists drill is preferable to hearing either Chris Evans or Zoe Ball.

I am back to CDs in the car, occasionally Kiss or Heart who seem to play some music that I like but on the whole I have given up too.

Love Tony Blackburn Johnie Walker and Paul Ogrady n a Sunday
But agree with OP radio 2 has changed.
I listen to radio Wales for its down to earth hosts and lovely music of the 60s70 and also modern

Can you pick up either Smooth Radio or Magic, both play easy listening music. The draw back is the adverts that appear quite frequently.

I didn’t like Evans’ ego but his music was much fresher than Zoe’s playing. I’ve stopped listening in the mornings now as I’m not sure how deep they had to go to dig the noise up. ?

I disliked Evans and Zoe Ball is no improvement. Ken Bruce is one of my favourites.
Like Harris27 I enjoy listening to Johnnie Walker and Paul O'Grady. Terry Wogan of course is irreplaceable.

The world is so noisy these days. I wonder if it reflects empty minds. When we lived abroad and didn't have tv, the radio was on most of the time, now I rarely listen to it. Quiet, thoughtful people are just not catered for these days. When I want music, I play CDs.

lacemaker Sat 16-Mar-19 14:54:01

Yes me too

NanKate Sat 16-Mar-19 14:37:02

I still listen to Tony Blackburn, love his optimism and silly humour.

Harris27 Sat 16-Mar-19 14:03:49

I listen to smooth radio all week but radio two on a Sunday like johnnie walkers sounds of the70's and like Paul ogrady 5till 7 that's my ideal Sunday. I like 70's 80's music and that talk and don't shout couldn't stand Chris Evans!

FlexibleFriend Sat 16-Mar-19 14:03:09

I rarely listen to the radio but if I do then it's absolute radio.
