Should the Jeremy Kyle show be axed?

I’m sure that this is the worst show of its kind, but I think there are plenty of others out there feeding on human misery, all the programs about people on benefits, having the bailiffs coming to take all your worldly goods away, and, I haven’t actually seen this either, but Big Brother must be one of the worst shows on television

On news programmes they don't deliberately set out to make the person look stupid, which it sounds as though Kyle does.

I’m not talking about porn here, or soaps.
I’m talking about exploiting vulnerable people interviewed on news items with what often seems to be ghoulish probing, when they are bound to be in a highly emotional state and then later regret giving their consent to be interviewed.
Sometimes watching the news I’m reminded of Drop the Dead Donkey, except that was a comedy show. In real life it’s not funny at all.

I have never watched it, but I have seen close ups on the monitors when I used the gym, and the hatred and venom on the participants faces, and the audience's delight as they howl at the misery of others is deeply disturbing.

I think it should be stopped, but it will no doubt be replaced with something even more unedifying. As long as there is an audience for this type of programme, people will choose to appear on it.

I'm always surprised that it's still running. It's so boring! I am of course very sorry that this has happened but these people do sign up to do it.

I ave never seen the show but it sounds to me to be the human equivalent of bear baiting and dog fighting and those were both banned in the mid 19th century. I expect there were arguments then that the bears and dogs 'enjoyed' it.

A show like this should not exist in a country that considers itself to be civilised

Yes, it should go. It's not the type of "entertainment" we need.

I've seen it a few times so wouldn't miss it but I don't think it should be banned. The people who go on it know what it's like and happily agree to take the fee and the abuse that goes with it. without programmes like this I wouldn't know people like these existed. Their lives certainly ain't great but they could change them if they wanted to, no one makes them make the choices they do. Live and let live I say.

The way Jeremy Kyle talks to people is appalling.

I wonder if it gives the watchers a sense of superiority - no matter how messed up their own lives are there is someone even more dysfunctional.

Should have said that I have never watched any of these programmes. When I worked on a dialysis unit one of the patients was obsessed and would have a real hissy fit if any other channel was put on. Really boring for the other six patients.

Yes jane. It has audiences of about 1m and is ITVs most popular daytime show. But as said upthread there are other shows which also feed this need in a certain type of person. Atm on GN I would say there’s also a lack of common decency on certain threads - it’s damn depressing.

It was bound to happen the way that often vulnerable people are exploited. Same goes for most of the reality shows. No sensible person would open themselves up to the manipulative tv producers but some are desperate for their five minutes of fame and hang the consequences. My daughter used to work with a couple who were regulars on a similar show. The team coached them on the subject matter and they then made up a pack of lies to suit. They weren’t actually paid but would be put up in a decent hotel and given gifts such as microwaves. The celebrity ones are almost as bad as the people are so desperate to rekindle their failing careers that they sacrifice their pride and self esteem. Fame seems to be like an addictive drug. I don’t even like having my photo taken so find these people quite bemusing.

Yep Jeremy Kyle should take his vile show and sling his hook.

A big fat Yes ! I never watch the show, I either read about it or hear about the dross who attend it and as far as I can understand it encourages misery and a lot of anger to erupt. We don't need " shows " like this as there's enough anger about as it is.

Should definitely be axed. Most of the people who appear are vulnerable and in many cases not that well educated - Kyle isn't interested in helping them, only in boosting his ratings.

Perhaps only that not many people actually watch daytime television - but perhaps it says more about common decency or the lack of it in our country.

It is being reported the man who killed himself did so because he failed a lie detector test on JK show. There is a reason lie detector results are not admitted in UK courts - because they are unreliable. JK presents the results as fact.

Having seen a couple of these programmes I think JK is a bully who happily shouts at and insults people, knowing he has a couple of strong men in the background to protect him. The audience is also sickening, almost baying for blood. They remind me of the stories of the women who used to sit by the guillotine knitting.

Yes, it should be. Kyle is a bully, an inept presenter - he repeats the same phrases over and over again e.g. "put something on the end of it," "I know I am getting old but ..." and so on. The show has become a promotion of him and his style; the participants seemingly being regarded as collateral damage.
