Great news
Spitting Image is set to make a comeback.
Pilot show being made.
Programme makers think the time is right, with Trump, Boris and Farage ripe for ridicule along with the Sussex threesome, Prince Phil, Corbyn, Bercow and JR-Mogg among others.
I, for one, can't wait.
Apparently, viewing figures were averaging 15m per episode...unheard of today.

This one?
There have been repeated calls for a return of the series since 2006. Will it really happen this time?

Bring it on. About time we had some satire on media. Mainstream media is terrified of any criticism of this ghastly government. So dreadful to see people sleeping on pavements, people committing suicide through poverty and the grubby fingers scrabbling to buy our precious health service. Out grandparents would be horrified to see what is happening to our society. We had such hope for better things in '45. Time people spoke out. We won't be silenced.

Wonder how Corbyn will be portrayed

Minniemoo Sun 04-Aug-19 11:25:24

It would be good to see a spot of satire. I wasn't a huge fan of Spitting Image but it had some great moments. I remember the media strike, was it BBC? ITV? Can't remember. And that one presenter who carried on working throughout and they had a sketch of him darting from one job to another.

Reading the news/weather/outside broadcasts/cleaning/chauffeuring etc. etc.

Most amusing.

Can’t wait!! Love a bit of satire!!

Amagran Sun 04-Aug-19 12:12:02

GrannyLiv, grin

We found it really funny at first but it soon became very predictable and eventually quite tedious so we gave up on it.

Would hate to see my family pilloried in this way. If those who are being attacked and criticized say they feel miserable and unhappy they, presumably, will be shamed again as wimps so they possibly feel obliged to laugh off the cruelty and bullying!

Or perhaps our famous, and infamous, compatriots will be more unhappy if they are not included in the “fun”. Who knows nowadays when being “famous” is the holy grail?

Seem to remember my DD1, DS and their friends getting a real rollicking from their headteacher for singing the chicken song:

Hate it, its humour at its worse. I am surprised Gab54 that you like it as you are one of the first complain when people are disrespectful to you.

Shortlegs Sun 04-Aug-19 12:45:03

I think a remake of Spitting Image would be great. It will give all those easily offended something to be offended about! Bring it on.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 04-Aug-19 12:49:21

Shortlegs, I don't watch it, so won't get offended.

merlotgran Sun 04-Aug-19 13:04:41

I loved it.

Jabberwok Sun 04-Aug-19 13:13:05

Horrible programme! People who get pleasure or amusement from ridiculing others by cruel satire are beyond me! Perhaps human rights could be used to prevent such nastiness? I can't believe that it could be appropriate for a person of colour?!

quizqueen Sun 04-Aug-19 13:23:58

These satire type programs usually have an element of truth in them so they could be seen as trying to make our politicians and the royals shape up a bit better, as well as being entertaining. The British are known for their sense of humour, sometimes sadly lacking in our PC nowadays

Nana3 Sun 04-Aug-19 13:31:33

I still use the phrase, "nice peas Norma" from the John Major sketch.

inthewrongroom Sun 04-Aug-19 13:59:42

Whooop! Can't wait and, could there be a better time than this? Let the "spitting" commence ... I, for one, could do with a little intelligent humour!

WOODMOUSE49 Sun 04-Aug-19 14:03:45

Looking forward to watching it.

Viewing figures were amazing then because there wasn't a huge choice of channels etc as there is today. I remember John Mcenro, Thatcher (Steve Nallon was brilliant with her voice) and the Royals.

sharon103 Sun 04-Aug-19 14:04:02

I found it funny and would watch it if it comes back on tv again. It's my kind of humour. Loved the Royal family take offs. Lighten up folks, (ducked)

Jabberwok Sun 04-Aug-19 14:31:18

Remember Charlie Hebdo! Clearly no sense of humour there or any attempts to ' lighten up'!! Satire is cruel, offensive and can be deadly!

LuckyFour Sun 04-Aug-19 14:37:22

I think it's quite clever but I don't like the constant sending up and criticising of our Royals and politicians. They are trying their best even if we don't agree with them, and politicians are elected by us!

GabriellaG54 Sun 04-Aug-19 14:46:33

Could include Kim Jong-un, Esther (Barnet) McVey, Mrs Macron, Rory Stewart and the expanding brood of JRM plus Sheik Maktoum (he with the built-up shoes) and Popeye, aka P Beatrice.
As has been said, lampooning is as old as the hills. Punch (magazine) was known for it's caricatures.
People want more than their 15 minutes of fame nowadays and this is no different from posting stuff on YouTube.
If you don't like...don't watch...simple. grin

Jabberwok Sun 04-Aug-19 15:00:50

Honestly, I give up! G54. The other people you name is bad enough, but Popeye aka Princess Beatrice is cruel beyond belief and you should be ashamed of yourself for making such a horrible comment about the appearance of a young woman who has never done you any harm and thinking it to be hilarious to lampoon her. I can't believe you are actually that vicious.

GabriellaG54 Sun 04-Aug-19 15:04:54

I am indeed. Whatever you choose to think as you know me so well...er ?...don't you??

Joplin Sun 04-Aug-19 15:23:03

Jabberwok, I so agree with you. No doubt Graham Norton will be a fan if this returns & will probably use it for added ammunition at the start of his programmes. He has some good guests but his introductory sniping is usually cringeworthy.

Camelotclub Sun 04-Aug-19 15:31:08

Also anyone remember 'The Chicken Song' and 'I've Never met a nice South African' which couldn't be made today in our PC times!

Jabberwok Sun 04-Aug-19 15:48:17

Tbh G54,I feel rather sorry for you. To find amusement in lampooning someone for their appearance whoever they are, (which lets face it is something none of us can help,) is just sad!
