Great news
Spitting Image is set to make a comeback.
Pilot show being made.
Programme makers think the time is right, with Trump, Boris and Farage ripe for ridicule along with the Sussex threesome, Prince Phil, Corbyn, Bercow and JR-Mogg among others.
I, for one, can't wait.
Apparently, viewing figures were averaging 15m per episode...unheard of today.

Well Gabby you are running true to form by posting nasty comments.

I think producers will have to be careful to ensure it's politically correct..e.g no racially offensive language etc. There's plenty of other material to play with. As regards faces, there have always been caricatures portrayed in newspapers, on TV e.g 'Have I got news for you' has a whole wall of them behind the panel. I agree with a previous poster that there's alot more horrible uncensored stuff written on social media. I am hoping it will get my chuckle muscles exercised, will make a change from the many 'all too serious' dramas on TV

Yes, a GN Spitting Image might be fun. However, our posts only reveal a fraction of what makes us tick.

I'd be bloody annoyed to be portrayed incorrectly. grin

Pudding123 Sun 04-Aug-19 20:30:52

I find all types of cruel jibes to be tasteless and it doesn't make me laugh in the slightest ,to be honest I didn't think it was even worth posting but feel I must vent my feelings and agree with Anniebach.Gabriella I find most of your posts disagreeable you seem to take delight in being controversial .

Amagran Sun 04-Aug-19 20:26:43

You have a point Jabberwok - maybe they'll go for Gransnetters! I'll volunteer to be a victim! wink

Jabberwok Sun 04-Aug-19 20:17:27

Exactly Annie. Very cruel, as was mocking President Reagan. In fact most if not all was cruel. I don't care at all for JC, but I certainly don't want to see him lampooned. Will the new programmes include mocking religion, particularly Jews? Muslims maybe, Christians almost definitely! All good for a laugh I daresay!

Anniebach Sun 04-Aug-19 20:07:17

Gabriella, I was referring to you mocking the face of a woman , couldn’t care less what programmes you like or dislike

Amagran Sun 04-Aug-19 19:59:33

Spitting Image would indeed have been cruel and inappropriate if it hadn't been based on truth. And it is this element of truth which made the more self-aware of the 'victims' (including HRH) laugh along with it.

Calendargirl, Alzheimers is indeed not a laughing matter and sufferers and their families have my deepest sympathy. However, when the most powerful person in the free world, whose finger is on the nuclear button, is either showing early signs of the disease or for other reasons is just not up to the job, political observers and reporters have a duty to report on it through their chosen media.

What I would point out about Spitting Image, is that it was scrupulously fair in its coverage - we all had our political heroes lampooned as well as those who (due to our own bias) we might have thought more deserving.

Day6 Sun 04-Aug-19 19:50:33

I'd definitely want to see the Anna Soubry and Chukka Umanna puppets. A lot of fun to be had there.

I enjoyed Spitting Image first time round. Politicians and public figures have been lampooned for hundreds of years. It's no worse than having them ripped to pieces by the public on social media every single day in the newspapers, on You Tube, on forums all over the place. It's the way of the world now, and I agree that's probably not a good thing to savage others, but the cork came out of the bottle years ago. It can't be put back.

We do it here on Gransnet and we can be savage about people we don't like. Let he who is without sin, etc.

It comes with the territory I think. I value my anonymity. Who'd want to be in the public eye?

merlotgran Sun 04-Aug-19 19:49:26

I thought the Queen Mum being portrayed as Beryl Reid was a hoot.

When I watched The Queen, starring Helen Mirren I kept expecting the actress playing the Queen Mum to have a Brummie accent grin

Riverwalk Sun 04-Aug-19 19:39:03

Mr 'nice peas, Norma' turned out not to be so dull and grey in the end! wink

GillT57 Sun 04-Aug-19 19:35:00

Ah yes, we too say 'nice peas, Norma' Crikey a few people on here need to lighten up, we are living in a time of huge characters and many of them need lampooning. If you don't like it, don't watch it, it isn't compulsory.

GillT57 Sun 04-Aug-19 19:30:39

well I am pleased, despite some people's rather po faced reactions on here. I know it was a little cruel sometimes, but with so many people ripe for ridicule there is a fantastic crop of characters. When it was on years ago, there was a range of dog squeaky toys based on some of the characters; we had Ronnie Reagan and used to throw him around for the dog 'Go and get Ronnie, fetch!' Ah happy memories. It will be especially great to look out for the Trump character....thanks GeorginaG54, you have made my day.

GabriellaG54 Sun 04-Aug-19 19:19:56

Anniebach
I beg your pardon?
just to get attention ?
? Doesn't everyone who posts on here want people to read it?
That's the whole point.

If you don't like the subject matter then why are you on here making sarky comments?
There are many more pro Spitting Image posts than cons.

Move on if you don't like. I and plenty of others do like.
Each to his own...I don't care what you watch and I don't have to fit in with your idea of acceptable viewing.

Joyfulnanna Sun 04-Aug-19 19:07:18

Gabriella. I loved it! Can see why programme makers want to bring it back, pure comedy gold poking fun at all that's wrong in the world. Hope it's on Sunday night like it used to be!!!

Calendargirl Sun 04-Aug-19 19:06:48

I used to find some of it amusing, but not sure if bringing it back is right for nowadays.
“The President’s Brain is Missing” doesn’t sound so funny when you think how Ronald Reagan was stricken with Alzheimer’s later in life.
And it must be quite hard to see yourself portrayed as depicted by the puppets, so unflattering!
Even politicians must feel thin-skinned sometimes.

Anniebach Sun 04-Aug-19 19:06:13

Gabriella the nastiest thing you have posted just to get attention

Riverwalk Sun 04-Aug-19 19:00:09

I loved Spitting Image!

What it would be like this time round depends on the writers - all the brilliant puppetry is nothing without talented political satirists.

glammagran Sun 04-Aug-19 18:50:57

I for one, shall look forward to it

Barmeyoldbat Sun 04-Aug-19 17:11:13

Jabberwork agree with you, and especially from someone who doesn't like it done to her/him

Jabberwok Sun 04-Aug-19 15:48:17

Tbh G54,I feel rather sorry for you. To find amusement in lampooning someone for their appearance whoever they are, (which lets face it is something none of us can help,) is just sad!

Camelotclub Sun 04-Aug-19 15:31:08

Also anyone remember 'The Chicken Song' and 'I've Never met a nice South African' which couldn't be made today in our PC times!
