GBBO - What the Actual Heck?

Really, really looking forward to this. Tuned in with feet up and (Mr Kipling) cake and tea in hand and....what a mighty disappointment!

Is it me?

it was forced, staged, humourless and as for the age demographic - the contestants looked like they didn't quite make Love Island and diverted to GBBO instead?

What the heck has happened?

Even Noel couldn't lift it.

Pink Jumper Woman reminded me of Rosamund Pike on a banned substance - and not in a good way.

Thoughts?

I can't be the only one thinking this?

I missed this but must admit I am getting a little tired of the format. Warning, I might also feel the same about Strictly..

Greciangirl Thu 05-Sept-19 15:00:24

Don’t watch it either as I think there are too many cookery programmes on t,v,

We are all being told to cut our food and sugar consumption, but on the other side we are being encouraged to eat and drink, bake and scoff loads of cakes.
Doesn’t make sense to me.

Jane10 Thu 05-Sept-19 15:05:18

Well I still enjoy it. I like Prue, Sandi and Noel and Paul is just Paul. I was disappointed at the lack of some older contestants though.

BlueBelle Thu 05-Sept-19 15:08:37

I didn’t watch fell out with it a while back as I really don’t like Paul holliwell arrogant little man I could never see why it needed simpering Noel there and the cakes and stuff got so bizarre that it felt like a cartoon cookery show
I do like Prue and think she looks fantastic for her age but she wasn’t enough to draw me back to it
Like many past it’s sell by date

TwiceAsNice Thu 05-Sept-19 15:34:29

I like it better on Channel 4 although I think a better range of ages was needed this year. Mary Berry got on my nerves and couldn’t stand Sue and Mel. I like Noel, Sandi, and Prue much better. Paul Hollywood is just Paul Hollywood he’s just got a big ego but he knows what he’s talking about. We watch it as a family, 2 daughters , SIL, me and granddaughters and we enjoy it.

What started as a sort of amateur who makes the best Victoria sponge or batch of scones has now elevated to really fancy and way out bakes

Yes, Calendargirl I agree. It is almost setting the scene for some horrific disasters, as if to ramp up the entertainment value.

I think the young lad is a hopeless cook, bless him. He is lovely, but how on earth did he make the grade? he doesn't really appreciate cooking techniques. My four year old great nephew did a better job putting together a cake with me a few months ago!

I too hate the youth element of this series. A few older and experienced cooks are needed for balance.

However, I think Noel and Sandi, who are slightly surreal are lovely. Their chat with the bakers is kind and often amusing. I didn't like the Mel and Sue combination at all, and was not a big fan of Mary Berry who only seemed to have one mode - slightly teacher-ish and twee. I much prefer Prue who seems to enjoy a laugh and has a naughty twinkle in her eye.

Valski Thu 05-Sept-19 15:55:41

I think Prue has been a great addition and she has the personality and wit that Mary Berry seemed to lack. Likewise with Sandi and even finding Noel tolerable. Afraid Paul’s superciliousness is already getting me down and could Ch 4 have found a more uninspiring bunch of competitors than they have?

Craftycat Thu 05-Sept-19 16:10:45

Gave up on this when it moved from BBC.
Couldn't stand Paul Hollywood & liked Mary & Mel & Sue.

Daisymae Thu 05-Sept-19 16:33:42

Still watching, but several of the contestants can't bake!

Operalover Thu 05-Sept-19 16:37:31

Never watched it and can't say I'm sorry. !!

Aepgirl Thu 05-Sept-19 16:57:15

When is Paul Hollywood going to grow up? His innuendoes are immature at best, and downright offensive at worst.

And why can’t the long-haired bakers be told to tie their hair back?

Alypoole Thu 05-Sept-19 17:12:09

I’m enjoying it and think they seem a really nice bunch of bakers.

Madgran77 Thu 05-Sept-19 17:17:44

Paul Hollywood is definitely becoming a bit of a caricature of himself

Sussexborn Thu 05-Sept-19 17:32:39

Was it all filmed before Paul Hollywood’s most recent “scandals”? I find him quite cringey now!

I normally enjoy it but commented to my OH that some of the contestants haven’t got a clue about baking and are being asked to create some weird off beat concoctions. More like sculpting than baking.

Worth watching to have a better understanding of an Extra Slice which we both really enjoy.

BradfordLass72 Fri 06-Sept-19 01:17:07

I only popped in to see what GBBO meant.
Now intensely glad I don't have a TV grin

Grandmama Fri 06-Sept-19 19:06:18

Disappointed with GBBO. I watched the last series (C4) and enjoyed it but I haven't even tuned in this time. Why no balance of age groups? Older contestants added a 'something' to the programme. Most if not all of the contestants are not exactly basic bakers, they all seem to have blogs. It's too long, going over the hour cuts into the start of programmes in other channels.

Nanabilly Fri 06-Sept-19 19:19:53

I still enjoy GBBO. Am not missing Mary Berry as I could not stand her anyway and Mel and Sue even less .
I enjoy Noel and Sandi but Prue ,I agree let's Paul take over.
Is channel 4 a channel for younger viewers? Maybe this is the reason why the ages are mostly younger.
Not liking the goth woman this year or the health freak chap either.

gulligranny Sun 08-Sept-19 21:22:28

I loved it then, I love it still .... I've been watching re-runs of old GBBOs on the Food Network and the Mel&Sue combination was definitely going down the pan, they became a caricature of themselves. I really liked Mary Berry and now I really like Prue Leith, I even like Sandi and Noel, although he doesn't appear to know where he is or what he's doing there. The C4 contestants have been as interesting as the BBC ones, up until now.

This year's contestants are very boring, not a character among them and not a good age mix at all. I'll keep watching in spite of that, as I love the programme. Can't stand Jo Brand though, so don't watch the Second Slice thingy.

Millie22 Tue 10-Sept-19 10:42:43

Never watched the other Jo Brand thing either can't be doing with her at all and I haven't forgotten the 'battery acid' comment either.

Kerenhappuch Tue 10-Sept-19 11:02:31

It usually takes a while for the different characters of the contestants to emerge, but this year's do strike me as a bit 'samey'. Also, it may be just me, but the tasks so far do seem to be geared up for catastrophe. I like it when the most imaginative or skilled baker wins the round, not when cakes and structures are falling to pieces around them.

Calendargirl Tue 10-Sept-19 12:14:01

I used to enjoy An Extra Slice, but now it’s too long. Half an hour was enough. As with most things, they drag it out unnecessarily. Also prefer Gardeners’ World when it’s 30 minutes long instead of 60.

oldgimmer1 Tue 10-Sept-19 17:44:26

I dunno...quite liking Tom Allen (couldn't stand him for ages).

The home bakes are hilarious.

Calendargirl Tue 10-Sept-19 22:23:50

Just been watching tonight’s bread bakes. Made me feel quite hungry. Still don’t warm to any of the contestants, and all seems very predictable.

oldgimmer1 Wed 11-Sept-19 07:23:16

I missed it. Worth catching up?

Calendargirl Wed 11-Sept-19 07:30:28

Put it like this. Didn’t look much else on between 8 and 9, so watched GBBO, turned over at 9 to watch The Capture on BBC1, the switched over at 10 to Channel 4 plus 1 to see who was eliminated. It’s a pleasant way to spend an hour or so, but cannot pretend I am riveted to watch the bakes or to see who is eliminated.
