Installing Anti-Virus software

I want to change my AV software, which is due to expire in a few days. Should I uninstall my old software before installing the new one, or after? I mean, would the old software files compromise the new installation or not? Any advice welcome.

You can switch off the old one, install the new one, and then remove your old one?

Bathsheba what operating system are you using? Windows 10 comes with built-in and good AV protection...

remove the old one, Windows 10 built in AV protection is pretty good and you shouldn't need anything else, let alone a paid for AV software

I'm still on Windows 8, have been using McAfee (paid for) but their renewal price is ridiculous, so I'm going to change to a free one, probably Avira.

Thanks for your input - I'll probably uninstall the McAfee first.
