This started last night. It’s on again tonight, not sure how many episodes there will be.
I enjoyed it, the Profumo Affair was in the news when I was about 8 or 9, went over my head then obviously, but remember my parents were shocked that she was carrying on with the Minister for War and a Russian at the same time.
Not sure about Ben Miles’ appearance as Profumo, he looked a bit scary I thought. James Norton seemed an authentic Stephen Ward.

I'm quite enjoying this, but struggling a bit with the jumpy timelines.

James Norton is too young to be Ward imho, and wasn't CK a redhead?

Iam64 Tue 31-Dec-19 15:08:15

Varian, in fairness the issue was mostly the potential defence problems given he was sharing CK with a Russian diplomat (ie spy)
Mind you, Johnson gave £150,000 or thereabouts of our money to a woman he was having sex with. So far as I can see he’s walked away from that easily. She’s evidently writing a book.

It is worth noting that Profumo had to resign, not for having an affair, but for lying about it. Nowadays we have a PM who can do both with impunity.

Actually it wasn’t the OBE,
Maw Welcome! Nice to chat again and you have the honour of receiving my first "Down Under"post for 2020. smile

We'll blame Annie for the mixup, but CBE could be an acronym for "Cunning Bugger's Effort". grin
What do you think?
Happy New Year.
Btw; I'm back on "that stuff" after my dental trauma yesterday!

MawB Tue 31-Dec-19 12:53:38

Actually it wasn’t the OBE, Profumo’s charitable work was recognised when he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1975.

Rufus2 Tue 31-Dec-19 12:42:36

'Other Bugger's Effort
Jane That's a good version! Make that "OBE Class 2" grin
Then ours is "OBE Class 1"..,,,."Over Bloody Eighty"

Only 20 minutes to 2020, then we wipe the slate clean and start over again! wink

Iam64 interesting (and frightening) that some girls who are abused as young teenagers go on to live that kind of lifestyle, as if they feel it inevitable and normal that they will be controlled and used/abused by men and occasionally women too.

I think that Christine Keeler was far more vulnerable than Mandy Rice-Davies who was a much tougher character.

AllTheLs Tue 31-Dec-19 12:24:44

Found it really boring. The Snow Cats and Me on the other side was far more gripping and just made me melt (not sure whether that was Gordon Buchanan or the beautiful lynxes)

Iam64 Tue 31-Dec-19 12:21:32

Nothing much changes indeed Callistemon. Except, most of us are less likely to judge 17 year olds with the life experiences CK had for living as she did at that age.

It's a good dramatisation, part of our lived history. The role of Mi5 makes clear just how much knowledge and influence they had and continue to have. They make decisions about what is in the public interest and we only know what they allow us to know.

Callistemon Tue 31-Dec-19 12:17:32

Nothing much changes, does it!

Except that the pimp in the latest scandal is a woman.

Jane10 Tue 31-Dec-19 12:01:30

rufus so you've got an 'Other Bugger's Effort' then? What was it for?

Anniebach Tue 31-Dec-19 11:58:58

Stephen Ward could be classed a pimp

ladymuck Tue 31-Dec-19 11:53:29

I was living in Leamington Spa, so the story was local to us. I do remember it being in the papers, but didn't understand what it was all about.

Framilode Tue 31-Dec-19 11:50:17

I think it was about the establishment closing ranks to protect their own with the fall guy being Stephen Ward.
Profumo was awarded the CBE in later life, even more prestigious than the OBE.

Mandy Rice Davies became a successful business woman in Israel. She was married 3 times and eventually became something of a friend to Mrs Thatcher and Denis.

They certainly were terrifying times, the cold war between USA the west and USSR, the east, and then the Cuban missile crisis we lived in fear and came very close to another world war on more than one occasion.

Callistemon Tue 31-Dec-19 10:40:24

Perhaps you were too young to understood the implications, resurgam.

This was in the 1960s during the Cold War and a time of espionage featuring prominently in the news, of a fear always in the background of nuclear Armageddon. This scandal involved the Minister of War and the Russian Attaché simultaneously sleeping with the same girl.

Any other upper class individuals who have turned themselves around?

I'm an OBE as well as an OAP! Does that count? hmm

loopyloo Tue 31-Dec-19 10:02:57

Granny 23, moi aussi......

Anniebach Tue 31-Dec-19 09:58:57

Christine married a police officer.

Mandy Rice Davies ,’2 years younger’ , lived off the publicity for most of her life.

It's important to know an erring individual can change for the better. Any other upper class individuals who have turned themselves around?

As for Christine, it would have been so good to hear she was protected by some powerful lover for the rest of her life.

varian Tue 31-Dec-19 09:10:50

I can remember the scandal at the time. The actress who plays Mandy Rice Davies is very much as I remember her but I think the actress plating Christine Keeper is badly miscast. Christine Keeler was a redhead and much more beautiful.

Iam64 Tue 31-Dec-19 09:10:41

Granny 23, and Prince Phillip

Granny23 Tue 31-Dec-19 08:56:19

Why did Prince Andrew keep popping into my head while I was watching this? Plus ca change.........

Rufus2 Tue 31-Dec-19 08:42:01

We always thought Mandy Rice-Davies made Christine look like Mother Theresa! When I saw a photo of C.K.in The Daily Mail pushing a shopping trolley just before her death, her features said it all. Reminded me of that final scene in "the Picture Of Dorian Grey"
But that photo of her astride that chair, was terrific! grin
How many GNs have tried that in front of a mirror? hmm

Daisymae Tue 31-Dec-19 08:06:39

The establishment well and truly welcomed profumo back into the fold. Keeler said that Stephen Ward was a spy and had to be silenced, hence the prosecution. There's an interview with Christine Keeler and Sue Lawley from the 80s on You tube which is interesting. It seems to me that Christine was used and abused all her young life. Rehabilitation was more difficult for her.
