We saw this at the cinema yesterday. If you want to cheer up a dull January day this is the thing - very cleverly done.

Teetime Sat 25-Jan-20 10:42:21

DAVID - please excuse typo

DoraMarr Sat 25-Jan-20 10:43:34

Looking forward to seeing this!

Yes next on my list just seen little women very good .

JackyB Sat 25-Jan-20 10:56:44

I just love Dev Patel. Hope this comes our way soon and in the original English.

TerriBull Sat 25-Jan-20 11:03:35

I really like Dev Patel, he's come a long way since he played the rather gawky young man in Slumdog Millionaire, saw him last in the supurb Lion, where he was all grown up. However, still haven't seen 1917 due to bouts of extreme coughing in our household, so that will have to come first. Hope both films linger in local cinemas for a while.

TerriBull Sat 25-Jan-20 11:05:26

supurb superb

Jane43 Sat 25-Jan-20 13:39:41

I’m going to see this on Tuesday with a friend. I love Dickens and I’m pleased to hear it’s good.

'David Copperfield' was done to perfection in 1999 with little Daniel Radcliffe as young David, Maggie Smith, Alun Armstrong and Emilia Fox. I just can't imagine wanting to see yet another version of DC!

Chestnut Sat 25-Jan-20 13:58:33

....and the 1999 version also had Trevor Eve, Zoe Wanamaker, Pauline Quirke, Michael Elphick, Ian McKellen, Cherie Lunghi, Imelda Staunton, Dawn French, Paul Whitehouse, Nicholas Lyndhurst. The list goes on. The new one would have to be pretty good to beat that starry cast!

Teetime Sun 26-Jan-20 10:14:18

It is though Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Dev Patel, Paul Whitehouse- fantastic cast and a fresh new delivery with some real surprises. Sunday Times critic loved it too.

Chestnut Sun 26-Jan-20 13:09:24

Paul Whitehouse has been promoted from the pawnbroker in 1999 to Mr Peggotty in the new version!

Jane10 Sun 26-Jan-20 13:18:58

It looks like it's a bit different from older versions. I can't wait to see it!

ladymuck Sun 26-Jan-20 15:13:47

Can no-one come up with something new? Why do they keep doing re-makes of the same old stories?

merlotgran Sun 26-Jan-20 15:24:00

I can remember the 1956 BBC series. My grandmother insisted I be allowed to stay up and watch it because she was a huge Dickens fan.

David Copperfield will always be my favourite for that reason.

Chestnut Sun 26-Jan-20 15:25:18

Agreed ladymuck, which is why they have to keep doing a 'new take' by altering the original story in some way through the casting or time frame. I don't want to run down Teetime's thread because I'm sure the new version is very good, but I am not a fan of 'new takes' as I prefer to stick to the original story. I'm sure the new one will be enjoyed by many and will be very entertaining though.
I'm sure this is why Downton Abbey is so popular, because it is a new story.

lemongrove Sun 26-Jan-20 17:08:22

Saw a bit of this ( trailer) and it looks really good, will probably go with a friend to see it, as not sure men will enjoy it ( could be wrong.)

SirChenjin Sun 26-Jan-20 17:20:12

I’m looking forward to seeing this too - Dev Patel is just brilliant.

If they didn’t do remakes we wouldn’t have had several enjoyable years of Aidan Turner and his scythe or Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen and their brooding good looks and britches. The world is a far better place with good remakes and handsome leading men <fans self>

Labaik Sun 26-Jan-20 17:29:58

Just seen it. It was ok and the acting was very good, but it didn't really work for me. The cinema was packed, though, and everyone else was laughing a lot. I'd put it in the category of 'just as happy to watch the dvd' films.

gulligranny Sun 26-Jan-20 17:36:01

Ah yes, SirChenjin, remakes okay, but the keyword there is "good". I once wasted several hours of my life watching a totally dire remake of "Psycho", can't imagine why because it would be impossible to better the original. On the other hand, the BBC remake of Bleak House a few years ago was absolutely excellent.

Really can't decide about David Copperfield, although the reviews have been good and the cast list is excellent. Not sure I'd want to be laughing at Dickens ...

DoraMarr Sun 26-Jan-20 17:45:16

Laughing at Dickens? Surely he is one of the best novelists at writing pathos, tragedy and comedy? Lots of David Copperfield is very funny.

Labaik Sun 26-Jan-20 17:53:58

Yes, but not side splittingly funny.

Chestnut Sun 26-Jan-20 18:22:09

I agree that remakes are important and often very, very good. But not always necessary unless previous versions are really dated. Some famous movies have been remade with little success. Having said that, new versions of Dickens have been done over and over again and everyone has their favourite.
I just hope they don't try re-making the Railway Children....

Chestnut Sun 26-Jan-20 18:23:20

......I've just remembered....they already have! Jenny Agutter was Mother grin grin

SirChenjin Sun 26-Jan-20 18:38:09

I don’t think there should be a rule that says something can only be remade if the previous one is dated - it should be more about the content and the artistry. From what I’ve read this one is really good so it sounds like it’s a worthy remake of something that will continue to evolve as new directors come forward and put their own stamp on things - and rightly so imo.
