So...
I will never forget:-
Jo Jo Rabbit
Hubby and I went to the movies last year to watch "Jo Jo Rabbit" - As it ended we all stood and began dancing, and snapping our fingers (you have to see the movie to understand) not a dry eye in the house.
Wish I could forget "Erasurehead"
The Killing Fields
Soldier Blue
War Horse
Watching westerns with my Dad as a youngsters
I've always loved Dirty Dancing, from the time if first came out when my daughter was still a teenager.
And more recently (couple of years ago maybe?) Still Alice (she had dementia) and Lady in the Van, which I thought was quite sad in lots of ways.
The first Christopher Lee Dracula was one I wished I’d never seen! I was only about 14 at the time - it scared the pants off me. I seem to recall wanting garlic to smear round the window frame, in case he crawled in at night, as a bat! Only we never had garlic in the house then.
I had a very old copy of the original novel, borrowed from my granny - even the title on the hardback cover - in creepy Gothic lettering - was scary - I couldn’t even sleep with that book in the room, in case it somehow summoned him. All this despite being well aware that it was only fiction!
I remember , years ago, when I was heavily pregnant, going to the cinema with DH. The titles for ‘ The LongestDay’, came up. ( DH just loves war films), I groaned but he said its only a trailer. Was it heck!!! A very uncomfortable few hours for me . I have ,of course seen it many times since. But always in a more comfortable seat.
Two movies I will never forget are Out of Africa and The Bridges of Madison County. The acting was outstanding how ever having had personal experience and fond memories of the locations where these movies were made make them, for me, unforgettable and still shed a few tears at these memories.
I never tire of the Naked Gun and Airplane! films : you always spot something silly/stupid /funny or random in the background.
Also the two Addams Family films, with the sublime Angelica Houston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd etc. Perfect casting.
As for forgetting horrible films, the one that messed with my mind as a child, was shown on TV, all about a nuclear bomb strike. I think it was called Threads.(!)
Gave me nightmares for weeks
The Exorcist was banned luckily before we had chance to see it. Another awful film was “ The haunting of Emily Rose”. It was a true story, and a priest was on trial for murder. We thought it was just going to be the court case, but there were flashbacks. We didn’t watch the whole film, but it troubled me for months afterwards. Did lots of praying! Stick to comedies now, and tv dramas.
As a teenager I went with a boyfriend to see Witchfinder General. It haunted me for years I just wish I’d got up and walked out but didn’t want to appear ‘uncool’ ! Best film from those days Love Story!
Fisherman’s friend great film
Stan and Olly not what I expected
1917 good, but thought provoking
Greatest showman fantastic
The favourite unforgettable in a bad way!
Favourites - Some Like It Hot and English Patient (must watch it again)
Hated - Silence of the Lambs. It took days to get it out of my head.
Biggest waste of time - Manchester by Sea and Le Mans 24 Hours, even if Steve McQueen was the star.
Among my favourites are, 'High Noon' and 'To Kill a Mocking Bird'.
Of course, I never watch 'The Green Mile' now, either. I can't stop crying.
The last episode of M.A.S.H.
I saw it about 30+ years ago. I can't ever get it out of my head. I am crying now.
Favourite - Annie - My daughter was quite poorly as a 2 year old and didn’t sleep well, and it was the only film that would pacify her. We watched it on repeat for months. So if they’re ever looking for someone to play Annie again I could audition and not fluff my lines once, as I’d have nothing to learn
Worst - The Nightmare on Elm Street films. My stupid ex brother and his wife decided it would be fine to let my then 4 year old watch it when he was babysitting one evening. I had months of nightmares and pure fear that Freddie Krueger was coming to get her.
I think my all time favourites are Con Air and Fifth Element. My go to films that I’ve watched again and again
Someone mentioned One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Fabulous film!
I actually went to sleep thinking about films last night!
12 Angry Men had a huge impact on me
The Angry Silence. I was about 12 when I saw this and was horrified at how people were treating the character who refused to strike.
Also another film I saw as a child was Life for Ruth.
A child badly injured. Father refused a blood transfusion. Court case. Brilliant film and very thought provoking
Also the Mandy films that were mentioned earlier . I loved those.
Can't really think of a film I wish I hadn't seen.
Maybe one will come to me tonight!
Wish I could forget "Deliverance", so horrible! And "Don't Look Now" in Venice - it still gives me the creeps when I see a child in a red coat! Nightmares. I'd love to go there but not sure I ever will. "Pride and Prejudice" I can watch again and again - Donald Sutherland laughing at the end is great.
Nobody has mentioned 1917, a film I would have liked to see but my daughter put me off. I enjoyed Little Women instead. As for LalaLand… what a waste of time that was.
Good from the past: The boys from Brazil, and Gone with the Wind.
The Deer Hunter and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. Both gave me nightmares for weeks !
Stella14; me too. It came on the tv one night and I turned it off straight away, only to realise the tv in the kitchen was also on and I had to brave going into the kitchen to turn it off. Even then I felt scared. Soon after I'd seen it at the cinema I stayed at a remote farmhouse in Wales. My boyfriend went out for the night leaving me on my own till the early hours and a window started rattling upstairs. He came back to find me sleeping in front of the fire downstairs as I was too scared to go upstairs.
Worst film ever: Jonathan Living Seagull.
Best films: Moulin Rouge, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Bridges of Madison County and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Many more fab films but too numerous to mention.
Don’t listen to the reviews of the new CATS film: it was entertaining with great music even if the overall premise is a bit bizarre. That’s TS Eliot’s fault!
I am very surprised that you liked Jojo Rabbit so much. I thought it was rather unpleasant - not my sense of humour.
Also, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was horrifying at the end. My favourite film is “Brooklyn”- simple - I nearly did the same but to Canada but fortunately never did!
Never let me go. About human clones, haunts me. Can't watch anything with that actress in it because of the association.
My favourite films differ with my mood - but if I am feeling a bit down then it has to be Hot Fuzz, Blazing Saddles and the Deadpool films (never fail to make me laugh).
Favourite - National Velvet
Worst ever - The Notebook. Hated it. Appallingly bad death scene.
Imitation of Life and Madam X saw both films staring Lana Turner. I was 16 and I cried for about a week after.
