Starting Sunday 23rd Feb, BBC1, 9 pm.

It's interesting because Lu Corfield used to be larger and is now on the thin side. That is not meant to be judgemental, merely an observation.

I do agree Greymar, women are each other's worse critics. I think Caroline aka Sarah, is an attractive 55 yr old woman. I don't think she looks any scruffier in "woollies" than in a "neat suit", and I hope she doesn't change her image.
She is a great role model for mature women, there are few enough good acting parts for women over the age of 30 as it is.
The younger teacher seemed to be drinking plenty without encouragement from Caroline and her reaction to finding out Caroline's history was just weird. You are probably right jura, all will be revealed.

jura2 Tue 03-Mar-20 13:18:29

yes- and we will probably find out why very soon- there is a reason, I am sure.

FlexibleFriend Tue 03-Mar-20 13:17:24

I didn't think Caroline made any sexual overtures at all and the younger teacher completely over reacted.

Greymar Tue 03-Mar-20 12:49:38

I don't care. I don't think it helps anybody when women judge other women in an unhealthy way. On a personal note, I have suffered at least 50 years of being bullied and belittled by people who should have cared for me. Weight was one of their favourite go to places to cause hurt.

annsixty Tue 03-Mar-20 12:43:00

Yes Greymar, I did indeed use those phrases, time will tell who is right.

Greymar Tue 03-Mar-20 11:26:34

I believe the phrase 'slimming herself down' was used along with 'smartening herself up'. I think the shape of the actress has changed.

merlotgran Tue 03-Mar-20 10:23:02

I think some of the weight might be padding and the first thing I noticed about Caroline in the first episode was her dowdy look compared to how smart she was before they moved. There has to be an explanation so annsixty could be right.

annsixty Tue 03-Mar-20 09:14:06

Crossed posts Jane

annsixty Tue 03-Mar-20 09:13:12

Greymar I don't recall saying that Caroline would lose weight to ensnare a partner.
I was thinking that maybe she had "let things slide" after losing a loved partner and having so many things going on in her life.
Some of us are unlucky enough to have been there and have needed a wake up call.

Jane10 Tue 03-Mar-20 09:13:06

Sally Wainwright is a very good writer with a great understanding of everyday life. It would be most unrealistic for characters to to remain looking exactly the same for decades. People, women, do put on weight. I know I look very different from how I used to when I was younger. It's common to be told to smarten up and lose weight. annsixty has spotted something in the trailer that could be relevant. Will just have to watch and wait.

Disappointed with this series, the giraffe episode is rather silly, I mean who or how would someone be able to get up there in the middle of the night in the dark(which I presume is when it was done) and not be noticed/heard. I mean it wasn't a little painting was it at ground level..I'm sure I would have heard something!

I think there are only 4 episodes, will prob carry on watching (only as there's nothing else on).

Bunch Tue 03-Mar-20 08:47:04

So disappointed. Like others I was over the moon when I heard it was coming back and enjoyed it until the last episode which I thought was rather silly and disappointing and a bit 'samey'. Not sure I will bother with it any more, really, really, disappointed. All that aside there is no arguing with the quality of the acting, although agree that Gillian's character could do with a makeover. Happy watching to those of you who are enjoying it.

Greymar Tue 03-Mar-20 08:43:45

'a big girl' What a disgusting phrase. Why on earth would an actress as talented as Sarah Lancashire and a writer as clever as Sally Wainwright agree to a story line whereby Caroline loses weight to snare a partner. Actually, this attitude absolutely stinks.

Jane10 Tue 03-Mar-20 08:35:12

annsixty- great idea! I wonder if that's what's going to happen.

Alypoole Tue 03-Mar-20 08:08:57

I agree Greeneyedgirl.

Curlywhirly Tue 03-Mar-20 08:05:32

I agree Greeneyedgirl although I do think she is a good actress, she does have a rather strange way of delivering her lines - as Gillian, I just thought it was her way of illustrating that Gillian was an overworked, stressed person. But, as she also does it in the Split, it is obviously just her way of speaking - it is a little irritating, her dialogue just doesn't seem to flow.

Greeneyedgirl Mon 02-Mar-20 23:30:30

I think this series was more enjoyable in the beginning but now too many story lines are being introduced. Sarah Lancashire is great as usual, but I think the actress who plays Gillian employs the same hangdog expression and oddly clipped way mid sentence of delivering her lines as she does in The Split which I find irritating.

SueDonim Mon 02-Mar-20 22:00:31

I agree, JaneAinsworth. I felt that if Caroline had been a man, her behaviour would have seemed rather predatory.

Callistemon Mon 02-Mar-20 21:51:17

Yes, it was ill-judged; she made assumptions based on a chance remark and this could cause trouble.

janeainsworth Mon 02-Mar-20 21:48:54

Caroline’s misjudgement could have repercussions. A head teacher inviting a junior colleague round for dinner, plying her with alcohol & then making sexual overtures?

annsixty Mon 02-Mar-20 21:37:04

I think that could be part of the story line.
In the trailer for next week.the woman she fancied .when telling her a few facts referred to the age gap and said, just look at yourself.
Cue, Caroline taking herself in hand by smartening herself up and slimming herself down.
I could be wrong of course.

Urmstongran Mon 02-Mar-20 21:24:02

Yes Jane10 you are brave to post about Caroline (SL). You won’t be the only one to have noticed though!

Jane10 Mon 02-Mar-20 21:02:24

I think I've noticed it more as I've just watched all 4 series in quick succession. She's still my favourite! Certainly come a long way from Corrie!

Calendargirl Mon 02-Mar-20 20:59:22

You’re very brave Jane10 commenting on Caroline’s weight increase. I think Sarah Lancashire’s figure was brought up on another thread in the past, and the poster was accused of fat shaming.
I agree, she does look different to the earliest series.
