I do think a cardiologist for one, would disagree with you Greeneyedgirl.

That is my only concern for anyone being an unhealthy weight.

You may not agree with me but I am only giving my opinion on something I know to be factual.

Callistemon Tue 03-Mar-20 19:46:03

I agree with you Kalu about the song and dance about Caroline being gay. She could have just said "how sad that you lost your partner, but lovely you have a legacy in your daughter. I must get home now, my DH will be wondering where I am!"

Caroline didn't look obese, just slightly overweight like many women after the menopause. A fairly tall (5' 7") size 16? Would a cardiologist worry excessively about that?

Callistemon Tue 03-Mar-20 19:46:50

If a cardiologist worried about all the size 16 reasonably tall women in the UK he would worry himself into an early grave.

Eloethan Tue 03-Mar-20 19:54:26

I thought the teacher who Caroline invited was rather "forward" in saying she would leave the car and get a taxi. Surely it was then quite normal to suggest, in that event, she might as well stay? Otherwise she would have to come back to collect the car.

It probably was unwise to invite a newly recruited junior member of staff to her home at such an early stage in their -professional relationship - and to share such personal information about her own private life and about her ex-husband's partner. However, I find it surprising that she didn't know about Caroline's marriage to Kate. There is usually at least one gossip at work who can't wait to give newcomers the lowdown on everybody.

Perhaps the new member of staff has ulterior motives or, given she might be feeling sensitive due to difficulties in her marriage, she misinterpreted the situation and felt she had been invited to Caroline's house on false pretences, ie not as a professional colleague but as a potential "conquest".

I too think some of the story lines this time are a bit far-fetched but I enjoy the characters so much that I hope I can carry on enjoying it.

Eloethan Tue 03-Mar-20 19:56:34

Or have I got it the wrong way round? Is it Caroline who is new at the school?

Callistemon Tue 03-Mar-20 20:00:41

Yes, I think she was head of a private girls' school in the previous series. Is this a state school?

Jane10 Tue 03-Mar-20 20:30:27

It was a large very posh co educational school. She was gently eased out by the board after her marriage to Kate.

Kalu Tue 03-Mar-20 22:49:29

Callistemon I didn’t say I thought Sarah Lancashire obese nor that a cardiologist would worry excessively but I do think it would be a concern.

As you agree, she is overweight and could well be putting her health at risk.

Greeneyedgirl Wed 04-Mar-20 09:38:09

Kalu I do not underestimate the risk of cardiac disease in women, which incidentally kills more women than breast cancer, but as I'm sure you know it's multi factorial. (Most of us older women are at risk, merely because of our age). Smoking would probably be top of the list for risk factors, family history, raised cholesterol, obesity, alcohol intake, lack of physical activity, to name a few.
I would not like to say a woman who is overweight, not clinically obese as far as I can see, is more at risk than anyone else without knowing her personal history.

Kalu Wed 04-Mar-20 10:57:01

Greeneyedgirl I am aware of all the factors you have pointed out and of course personal lifestyle/health have to be taken into account but medical studies have shown overweight/obesity is a much higher risk than smoking ergo there is more concern regarding this issue.

Sarah Lancashire, being overweight, is putting her health at risk of problems which may arise due to her weight. Only a doctor could ascertain any problem but the facts show this to be a risk.

Greeneyedgirl Wed 04-Mar-20 15:06:43

OK Kalu. I surrender smileBeing overweight is definitely a risk for CVD. I dislike women being shamed purely because of their appearance but I accept that your concern was about the health of S L.
I am following this series for some light relief from the darker health concerns assailing us just now.

I’ve just done a little experiment. I tried the Q-risk calculator qrisk.org/2017/index.php
Increasing the weight (from my usual 60kg to 80 kg, and leaving everything else the same), actually lowered my 10 year risk by 0.4%.

Removing my family history of first degree relative with CVD reduced my risk by 3%.

Changing my postcode from a Northumberland one to a Cornwall one reduced my risk by 2%.

So as I can’t do anything about my family history, perhaps I should put on weight and move to Cornwall. confused

oldgimmer1 Thu 05-Mar-20 08:09:00

Haven't read through the whole thread and only just at the end of Series 2 - is it worth carrying on, honestly?

I'm enjoying it but finding everyone irritating. grin. Maybe that's s good thing..

Excellent acting though - especially from Nicola Walker - and I love Caroline's sleazy ex.

Still can't shake off Derek Jacobi as Claudius though...

Callistemon Thu 05-Mar-20 11:07:04

If you move to Cornwall first, you may put on weight with all those cream teas and pasties, janea!

Kalu Thu 05-Mar-20 11:28:44

OK Greeneyedgirl Pax? We shall look forward to enjoying the programme.

Greeneyedgirl Thu 05-Mar-20 12:03:03

Kalu ?

Jane10 Thu 05-Mar-20 12:52:34

Having spent a week binge watching 5 series I'm really missing the characters now I've caught up with it all. I think Celia is brilliantly written and acted. Her general awkwardness and tendency to back herself into corners yet remain endearing is sooo good. I'm not a fan of Ann Reid after some interviews but hats off to her. Sally Wainwright has created a dream character for any actress to play.

janeainsworth Thu 05-Mar-20 13:38:12

Win-win Callistemongrin

I was a bit puzzled by the Qrisk calculator which is what doctors use to decide amongst other things, whether or not to suggest taking statins.

There are no questions about diet, alcohol consumption or the amount of exercise you take, so presumably I can carry on with my wine-drinking, eat what I like and slouch around at home instead of going to fitness classes etc and my risk of cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years remains the same hmmconfused

gillybob Thu 05-Mar-20 13:53:40

I'm not sure Ann Reid needs to do much acting for her part as Celia.

Greeneyedgirl Thu 05-Mar-20 14:02:53

I agree janea. Most relevant thing on the chart seems to be blood pressure, and when I added a few kilos to my weight my risk dropped. As I mentioned up thread, CVD risk is multi factorial, and doctors would take other factors into consideration I would assume.

gillybob, I agree, she seemed exactly the same on WDYTYA!

Kalu Thu 05-Mar-20 14:18:32

I do remember Ann Reid’s displeasure at winning her Gransnet award. She was quite a grumpy knickers about it?
Doesn’t stop me enjoying the series though.

I do wish something good could be in the cards for NW’s character . She really needs cheering up.

Callistemon Thu 05-Mar-20 19:47:16

One of the consultants at Swindon Hospital was prescribing a glass of red wine each evening for his cardiac and stroke patients, I think.

I don't know if he's still working there.

Witzend Fri 06-Mar-20 09:20:33

I hope I’m not the only one who thinks Judith’s house is ghastly!

Luckygirl Fri 06-Mar-20 12:59:43

Tried the Qrisk - mine is 25% risk in next 10 years. But it also went down if I pretended to be heavier than I really am! Also it shot down to 13% if I unticked the atrial fibrillation.

If I pretended to be a man it shot up to 33% - so there is some benefit to being a woman it would seem.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 06-Mar-20 16:32:34

witzend awful house, sad thing is that that it’s probably a real house and not a stage set. Not my idea of a home, but then I’m not a best selling Author!
