I really enjoyed the first series but seeing as it was two years ago I'm finding it hard to piece it all together given there are so many necessary but confusing flashbacks.

A few of the characters look alike as well which makes it worse.

Hopefully it will become clearer next week.

We've just finished it on catch-up and really enjoyed it. Although Joanne Froggatt looked so grim throughout that I thought her lips would disappear altogether. And DH asked plaintively if no-one ever brushed their hair any more ...

Actually I would go back to series 1 on catch up and see it all. I enjoyed it!

Thank you Calendargirl, now I’ve got a good excuse to delete!!

It’s number 2 Toadinthehole.

Yes, you really need to have watched series 1, or it will seem even more incomprehensible!

To be fair, the first series was good, this second one not a patch on it.

My husband has been recording the latest series, no. 3 I think? I’ve said there’s been other series, which we haven’t seen. Do we need to have seen the others before we watch this one?

This extract from a Times review by Ben Dowell of Liar made me laugh:

"Katherine Kelly's gum-chewing hard-ass detective, who got on everyone's nerves, decided that Laura had been through too much. To an obviously lesser degree so had we."

Having now watched the last episode I agree it was depressing and confusing (flashbacks) with an implausible plot. The fact that 'girl power' was the overriding message was appalling, with the two women colluding like that and letting an innocent man face the music! Laura should have owned up right from the start and claimed self-defence. After all, the knife was being used against her until she got hold of it. What makes her guilty was leaving the body and not owning up.

I wasn't expecting that twist at thend. Thought it was the sister.

Sparklefizz Tue 07-Apr-20 13:59:48

What a mess of an ending. Well, that's 6 hours that I won't get back again. Sigh ......

Calendargirl Tue 07-Apr-20 12:53:29

Yes Eloethan that bothered me also. Oliver was horrible, but he shouldn’t have been standing trial for a murder he didn’t commit.
Wrong message entirely.

Atqui Tue 07-Apr-20 12:41:09

I couldn’t believe that weasly male detective would actually have a woman wrongly convicted of murder to save his sons career. We go to lengths to save our children but that’s a step too far for a previously straight cop.

Teetime Tue 07-Apr-20 11:42:51

Well I'm glad its all over - quite depressing watching I thought.

Eloethan Tue 07-Apr-20 11:37:44

The underlying message was, to my mind, not a very acceptable one. Someone who had admittedly committed crimes and who was a most unpleasant person and who should face justice for those crimes was also going to be tried for a murder he hadn't committed. And the police officer was well aware of the fact but just walked away from it. That doesn't seem like a good message to me.

Bellanonna Tue 07-Apr-20 11:19:24

I think so. Have the police got the videos that Andrew made of Oliver’s unsavoury activities?

Calendargirl Tue 07-Apr-20 06:42:37

So was Oliver going to be tried for Andrew’s murder?

BlueBelle Tue 07-Apr-20 05:46:24

Can’t say that was as good as I was expecting.
unrealistic end she was a fraction of his size watched it all the way through but can’t really say it was that enjoyable all the jumping backwards and forwards didn’t help
Ahh well

Elrel Tue 07-Apr-20 01:33:35

Can Joanne Froggatt really handle herself like that or was it a stunt actor? Impressive!

Elrel Tue 07-Apr-20 01:29:32

Yes, a convoluted letdown

Eloethan Tue 07-Apr-20 00:26:41

I thought it was all a bit of a letdown really. Far too convoluted.

Bellanonna Mon 06-Apr-20 23:14:26

Quite a surprise for me. A tad unrealistic given that he was male, stronger, taller, and would surely have overpowered her?
Good for her though. The policewoman was just glad to have her suspicions confirmed when Laura more or less confessed.
Unofficially of course.

Pittcity Mon 06-Apr-20 22:14:43

I think the ending was the right one.

Calendargirl Mon 06-Apr-20 22:00:15

YES I was correct, see previous post!!!

Calendargirl Sat 04-Apr-20 15:36:36

But Oliver is so obvious now isn’t he?

I’ve wondered if it was
a) The son
b) The sister
c) The brother in law.

It’s probably Laura in the end!

Chestnut Sat 04-Apr-20 14:24:13

Are you sure he's dead? He keeps popping up at different times, I'm expecting him to appear in the present time (which is I presume after he's been killed...if indeed he has been killed). He could be a zombie of course.

Pittcity Sat 04-Apr-20 13:50:11

I only know that it wasn't mewink
