Miss Taylor should have told you about napped fabric. She was the teacher and you the learner!

What a pity and waste of your money.

At secondary school we were directed to ‘Batcher’s’ in Manchester. Butterfield Patterns and fabrics.

After the obligatory apron we had to sew in gingham cotton, then embroider along the top (!) with silken threads, doing cross stitch and ... erm, other stuff. to wear in Domestic Science (!) I was EVENTUALLY instructed to bring material in and a simple pattern to sew a skirt.

Oh my.

It was 1967. I chose BROWN (of course I did) corduroy. I cut my shapes out. It wasn’t until I started sewing the pieces together that my teacher, Mrs Taylor (yes, really) noticed the nap of the fabric (such a grown up, tailorish word) went down at the front of the skirt and smoothed upwards at the back.

I love it too! I can’t sew for toffee. I love watching though.
Such flair!

I love this programme, but the last series had some quite poor sewers. I hope the candidates are more imaginative this time.
I alway remember the older lady in the first series, whose sewing was exquisite.

I can’t sew either but I love this programme. That Joe Lycett is a bit naughty ( but in a good way).

It starts on 22 April smile

MissAdventure Mon 13-Apr-20 18:11:44

When is it on, please?

BBbevan Mon 13-Apr-20 18:06:05

Oh goody. Love this programme. Can’t sew for toffee so I do admire the contestants.

Whoo! Hoo! Can't wait.
My dream would be to be hiding overnight in John Lewis haberdashery! Bought all my fabric for my wedding dress, five bridesmaids dresses' fabric and headdresses and my veil there. Can't get enough of the Sewing Bee.

My 'local' John Lewis back in the day was called 'George Henry Lee's. You could get everything there. All bought in 1976. Xx

Oh, it sounds marvellous, thanks calendargirl
Right up my street.

Auntieflo Wed 25-Mar-20 14:04:24

So glad this is coming back.
I love to sew, but the challenge, where they have to make something out of a motley selection of old garments, would floor me. No imagination, but they conjure up some amazing outfits.

Calendargirl Wed 25-Mar-20 13:27:52

Yes, MissAdventure but minus Paul Hollywood, and more gentle and a bit old fashioned, but very pleasant.

MissAdventure Wed 25-Mar-20 12:34:44

Is Sewing Bee similar to Bake Off? smile
I can't sew, by the way.

vegansrock Wed 25-Mar-20 12:32:27

For anyone who likes Sewing Bee and has Netflix they might like Next in Fashion which is a competition for professional designers , they have to make a particular outfit each episode eg Red carpet dress then there is a catwalk show at the end, then one is knocked out. Some of the outfits they make are amazing.

7 April so I'm told - hurrah!

I can’t sew, but always wish I could when watching the skill of the sewers on here, glad Claudia was replaced with whoever he is, she was a bit irritating.

It’s a nice, gentle programme, just what’s needed at the moment, could never understand why it was shelved a year or two ago.

Not quiet sure about Patrick's moustache ?
Ive just finished a pair of trousers. It's been over 40 years since I've made a pair. Aren't invisible zips wonderful.
When I first watched the video of how to insert one, I thought: it can't be that easy, it is ?

Fabulous programme. Quite inspiring and a great atmosphere. As long as they have Patrick Grant on again grin

Hoorah, at last something worth staying in for grin

Millie22 Tue 24-Mar-20 20:26:33

Yippee. It's such a good programme so pleased to hear it's coming back.

Deedaa Tue 24-Mar-20 20:17:33

So glad it's coming back. I adore the gorgeous Patrick and the chap they have introducing it now is great fun. Hope we have another nice collection of contestants.

Curlywhirly Tue 24-Mar-20 18:59:16

Love this programme. I loved sewing and used to make lots of my own clothes. However, don't do it now, apart from alterations. Although I can sew, there is no way I could cope with the task of designing a garment, I would have no inspiration at all; I marvel at what they conjure up.

Luckygirl Tue 24-Mar-20 18:50:46

Can't wait! It is being trailed on BBC so cannot be too long I guess.
