I started watching this film on BBC iPlayer but when I returned to finish watching it it had been taken off but I did find it on Amazon Prime. It is about the children sent to Australia under the Child Migrant scheme; they were promised a better life but ended up in what was essentially slave labour, living in horrendous conditions and enduring physical and sexual abound in some cases. They were even made to pay back the costs of their board when they reached adulthood and began working. Many children were told their parents were dead and many parents were told their children had been adopted and had a better life. Emily Watson plays a social worker who tries to help one woman trace her mother and ends up working full time to try and help hundreds of adults trace their parents, mainly mothers. She spends many months in Australia away from her husband and children and faces accusations of lying In the U.K. and Australia and even death threats. It isn’t an easy watch but Emily Watson gives an amazing performance portraying this brave woman.
